It would indeed be laughable if that was the basis of my statement.

To qualify for a BCS bowl we need to finish in the Top 14 in the final BCS
standings. We are currently ranked 18th. Any time a team far below us (e.g., #42
Notre Dame) beats a team that's ahead of us (e.g., #12 Pitt), it improves our
BCS chances.

Speaking of Pitt, check this out--Pitt can lose its next two games (Notre Dame
and at West Virginia) and STILL be the Big East BCS representative if...

A) West Virginia loses at Cincy
B) Cincy loses at Pitt

Not an entirely implausible scenario.

Great story, Tom.

Clips did a CliffsNotes version of this article a few weeks ago...

http://www.PennStateClips.com/2009/10/update-60-minutes-video-blow-to-brain.html

I still wonder if LJ's issues are being exacerbated by some kind of neurological
damage caused by too many hits. He's in the top 100 in NFL Career Carries.
That's a lot of blows to the head.

It's long; read it when you have time, but this is the definitive piece on this
subject knowing what is known. Gladwell is so great at making really complicated
stuff seem easy to understand.

>> Well the market is wrong a lot. <<

The research and historic data shows the opposite. Each combination of Point
Spread and Total implies a winning percentage for each team. (You see this
reflected in the Money Line.) Historically, the bigger the implied win
percentage, the higher the win rate. Moreover, the implied winning percentages
are very close to the actual win percentages over large numbers of games.

Finally, your sample size (one team's games over a two-year span) is far too
small to determine if the market was "wrong."

Well the market is wrong a lot. The last two years is a pretty good
demonstration of that. With all the information the market had about Ohio State
and Penn State, it turns out the market had no clue about how those teams would
match up.

Of course the Indiana defense is poor, but they do give scholarships. Their
offense has some talent and decent coaching. If PSU is flat -- and after
Saturday, that is a definite possibility -- the D could give up some points and
get behind. Combine that with some carelessness and turnovers on D, and PSU
could get way behind, just like Iowa did.

I'm not saying it's gonna happen, or even likely to happen, but it is plausible
-- because Indiana is not bad this year.

Anybody who thinks Penn State is too talented to lose only needs to rewatch
Saturday's game.

Kevin's submission of the Black Shoes Diary synopsis. I'm not going to sit here

gets WAY too jacked up for "big games." This was evident early and tends to lead
to him throwing high and hard. He has also continued his very unfortunate habit
of throwing off his back foot across the middle under pressure.I think he
evidences leadership and the suggestion that he doesn't seems unfair.

surprised to see him return. I will preface my further remarks with the caveat
that I realize the OL in front of him is (and has been) very, very suspect. That
being said, he continues to disappoint. Obviously I don't know if he's been
playing hurt, or to what degree the rumors of illness are true. I was quite
disappointed when #22 returned after the Stephon Green carries, or for that
matter, the Beachum carries. Just a few years ago I'd been advised that he was
clearly a superior talent to some kid from Gooseneck, and his not starting in
front of him was a sign of the apocalypse. Something about the senioritis?
Because Evan Royster is a very nice player and probably a hell of a kid, but
he's not our best tailback right now.

That's funny, Steve. I used to walk my dog on our course on Monday evenings,
when it was closed for golf. I found so many balls, I finally stopped. I still
have bags of them in my garage also. I sometimes get them as gifts, but I cannot
remember the last time I had to buy them. :-)

This one of the reasons that although I've played golf for over 50 years I
haven't bought a "new" golf ball since the days when one miss hit with an iron
cut the cover off the ball. That's over 35 years of no new balls (there's a joke
there somewhere but this is a family group!). My game has existed in that time
on the miss fortunes of others, meaning that every stoke I've taken the last 35
years has been with a previous owned ball. Now when I walk my local 9 hole
course I consider it a bad round if I don't find 10-20 balls. I have 100s in my
garage, so if anyone out there is interested in saving the environment (and the
Loch Ness Monster) please send me an email, maybe we can work out a deal old
balls for Penn State tix, ha. I have several good condition balls that were only
driven by a little, old lady after church on Sunday.

There wasn't an Ohio State fan in the country who doubted the expected outcome
of the matchup,
especially with the completely predictable PSU offense. Lloyd Carr even figured
out exactly what
plays PSU would run, before they actually executed them. A couple of years ago,
some of the
Penn State players leaked out info that the Opponents were calling out the exact
next play and
lining up in the perfect Defense, while our Offense was approach the LOS.

OSU beat the Illini by 30

PSU beat them by 18

OSU beat Minnisota by 31

PSU beat them by 20

Lucky for us Lloyd is helping RR out.

Same here Steve. When Wife sold the place in Texas she gave all my bleached,
washed and polished used balls to some charity. I had them in those five gallon
used chlorine tablet plastic containers. There were twenty or so of them out in
one of my sheds. You go through a lot of those containers with a pool.

Right now my Mark VIII has another plastic box of balls filling up... and I
NEVER find twenty a round any more... in Texas 40 or 50 a round was normal
though. At the course I play here in 'Bama, they have a net to hit balls but no
driving range. So golfers just smack them off into the course before their
round. There are ALWAYS balls out there somewhere. I just ignore them anymore.

Mostly I sent this for Scott so he could look up companies making golf balls
that will decompose in a few years after they are lost without harming the
environment.

I my mind the real open question is: what will the attitude of our Penn
State team be? If they come out like all is lost- they could easily drop
this game. I've seen it before.

Maybe she's just old school and using gay as a synonym for happy. The tOSU fans
certainly looked happy on Saturday, especially after the long touchdown pass.

I looked at that play again last night. The defensive mistakes were made very
early in the play. Ohio State had two receivers on the left and neither PSU
defender was able to touch them off the line of scrimmage, much less disrupt
their route.

That left Sukay with two receivers coming straight down the field at him 8-10
yards apart. If one of them had been knocked off their pattern early Sukay could
have focused on the other to make a play. As it was he got caught in no-man's
land.

Indiana opened 3-0 by edging a I-AA team and two lousy MAC teams. They've since

Indiana has exactly the kind of defense that fooled us into thinking Daryll

We could get there, but it will also take a Michigan win over tOSU. Unlikely,
but who knows--rivalry game at the Big House, Michigan probably trying to get
bowl eligible...it's college football, anything can happen.

It's a win-win for us. We get a shot at the Big Ten Championship if Michigan
wins, but it's always a happy day when they lose and it would be fun to see them
finish dead last in the conference for the first time since 1962.

Similar situation this Saturday. Notre Dame is a touchdown underdog at Pitt. If
the Irish win it helps our BCS chances, but a Domer loss is always a reason for
celebration.

Bravo! Thought the crowd was subpar. Interesting point you make about the
additional fans in the seats...In the Club Section, its beginning to feel
like my Father and I are the only ones who will rise up and cheer. Even
the
coal crackers who sit behind us are being lulled to sleep. Not sure what

Also, tOSU was amped up and ready to play. My initial read was that
Tressel
had them rocking...but upon further review, I think they were playing for
Pryor

I'll third this comment about the crowd. I thought it might have just
been that I was in a different seat, but the crowd was pretty poor.
OSU had something to do with that I think. But even at the start of the
game, it was a lot lot quieter then Iowa.
I had the honor of sitting next to a freshman girl. Some of her insight:
1. Kept refering to OSU using a derogatory term for homosexuals. Classy.
2. Wondered why PSU did not kick more field goals this game. Seriously,
Wow!

I'll say bobby is absolutely wrong if he actually said that DC is not a
leader.
But bobby is absolutely correct that DC won't be going to NYC for the
heisman ceremony, and that DC craps his pants under pressure.

One thing seemed clear to me:
Odrick is an absolute beast of a DT that has carried this defense on his
back all season.
If a team is able to take Odrick out of the game with double teams, the
rest of the DL is very very average.
PSU will really miss JO next year.

I think Scott picked PSU to beat Iowa, since they really did beat them. It took
a fluke
play, in which Iowa was not even trying to block a punt, and then that punt just
happened
to bounce the right way, and turned into a quirky TD; otherwise, I think PSU
still did
beat Iowa.

Got back from State College late on Sunday and had some time to catch up on
reading this morning. Here's all I got:

1. Why do I keep falling for Rt. 322? At least I finally got a chance to see
Middleburg!

2. Just a stinkin' gorgeous Central Pennsylvania day. We rode (bicycles) out to
Stormstown and back in the morning. Freakin' breathtaking.

3. Order of destruction: (a) the total collapse of the OL started on offensive
play #1 and continued unabated. This led to (b) total loss of the field position
battle through (c) the total collapse of our special team units. (d) Defense
produced no turnovers.

I know Kevin's ready to fire Dick Anderson or Bill Kenney or whoever. Maybe
that's the answer, I don't know. Something's gotta get better.

4. I've read some criticism of Daryl Clark (primarily elsewhere) and I read
Kevin's submission of the Black Shoes Diary synopsis. I'm not going to sit here
and suggest he played well, but its really hard to lay a lot of the blame at his
feet. I will say this: my ongoing observation of DC leads me to believe that he
gets WAY too jacked up for "big games." This was evident early and tends to lead
to him throwing high and hard. He has also continued his very unfortunate habit
of throwing off his back foot across the middle under pressure.I think he
evidences leadership and the suggestion that he doesn't seems unfair.

5. Evan Royster. Hmm... I saw him get hurt in warm-ups and was very pleasantly
surprised to see him return.

6. Andrew Quarless was horrid as both a receiver and blocker Saturday.

7. I take it that Drew Astorino is the new Josh Hull? I'll grant you that he's a
bit undersized. Sukay seems to have some trouble in coverage. I thought D'Anton
Lynn was playing a nice game until he blew the coverage on the bomb. I hope that
Hodges kid is ready because we need some safety help in the secondary at the
very least.

8. Among the other phases that "didn't show up" Saturday was the crowd. One of
the quietest crowds in recent memory. Quieter than Iowa. I wish we could distill
back out the 20k sunshine fans and get back to the 80k that care.

9. tOSU. Like Kevin said, you gotta give 'em props. Their OL has made progress,
ours regressed. They used Pryor much better, I thought. Using him in the read
option made Herron more of a factor. Their defense was lights out, they
outcoached us, etc. I haven't seen this discussed but the difference in the two
teams energy levels was noticable. Especially after half-time.

10. I'm betting that despite the disappointment we come out ready next week.

We would have 2 conference losses, while OSU would only have 1, if
they win out as well.

If my thinking is correct, and maybe Trader or one of you have already mentioned

I joined you in rooting hard. I swear the stadium was at it's best during the
lean years leading up to the 2005 tOSU game.
