>> Met a guy that coached Trent Varva in high school. Varva was a linemen that
committed to PSU 4-6 years ago, never did anything, then surprised everyone by
walking away from football (all his HS coaches were shocked he gave up). Well,
he had "family issues" - knocked up his girlfriend. Has been working at Home
Depot. <<

Scott tells us walking the floor at Home Depot is now an average job in
Michigan. It's amazing how many gifted players piss away their talent with
off-field issues.

>> One of our former babysitters is the girlfriend of Nick Sheriden the crappy

Is she hot? If the skinny Tate Forcier gets injured Sheridan will be the starter
again. Can you imagine Penn State starting a season with a walk-on as the
second-string QB? Fans would be beside themselves.

>> Any news on whether or not we can expect weekly updates on the prediction
contest this year? And we need some arguments about the merits of the
algorithms, don't we? <<

I'll dig out the spreadsheet soon. I need to populate it with this year's
schedule. The results actually got out in a timely fashion last year. All except
for the post-Rose Bowl standings, which never saw the light of day. I think
everyone was too disgusted to care.

We're pretty close to having our backup being a walk-on, with McGloin. He
was number 2 at the Blue-White game.

Don't you think there is a very real chance that McGloin will be 2nd
team ahead of true frosh Newsome? It may not happen, but the
possibility exists. Either way, I won't be beside myself. I'll wait
until Iowa or Illinois hands Clark his next concussion.

...and fwiw Michigan fans need to cut Sheridan some slack. He joined the
Michigan team because he wanted to learn about coaching -- never expected to be
anything but practice fodder. And then got pressed into duty and did the best he
could. But he is not a Division 1 quarterback -- he's just a smart guy who loves
the game.

...Not that I would mind one bit if Sheridan is the starter by the time Michigan

Wonderful first person piece by Paul Jones at pennstate.scout.com

What a leader. He breaks his ankle and decides to use it as an opportunity to
work hard over the summer and graduate early -- and he'd be the first kid ever
at his high school to manage that. I'm sure he wants to get in and really
compete with Newsome for the 2010 starting job.

Wow, Penn State football sure has come a long way from the days when the
heralded starting quarterback refused to come to State College over the summer
to work out with the receivers because he didn't want to miss beach time with
his buddies in New Jersey.

This new generation is pretty impressive some times.

I think you make a very good point. Sometimes fans (myself included)
tend to blame poor game performance strictly on the athlete himself.
I know I did that to Morelli. But your point that some guys are just
not Div. 1 talents is accurate.

When some athletes are placed in situations beyond their ability level
(I would put Matt Senneca, Dayle Tate, and Mike Cooper in this
category), fans like me should be more tolerant. I hope I can
remember this post when I watch opponents throw for 400 yards on our
inexperienced secondary this fall.

OB

400 yards against our D? You could be right. Although, I am thinking more
along the lines of they start taking safties once they get the lead.
10-----3 and outs in a row could lead to some pretty hefty numbers against
the D though. and of course, they would then get "tired".

we were already pretty pitiful when iowa started taking the safeties in our
6-4 loss. recently we have been winning, so they might like the opportunity
to run it up on us. on the other hand, we managed to lose weekly while
holding all opponents under 21.

the over/under on wins is 9.5 during the regular season. if you read the
pre-season crap you might be thinking over 9.5 is a lock boys. get down.

I'm talking about Tony Sacca, and I think I'm recalling accurately from
Denlinger's book. Paterno spent extended periods of time furious with TS because
he was just a fun loving guy who wouldn't buckle down. At one point, trying to
get his attention, Joe screamed at him on the practice field that he was the
biggest bust in college football history.

TS became a very solid QB his senior year as we all know. If he'd had the work
ethic of a Clark or Newsome or Jones, goodness knows what kind of career he
could have had. The lost redshirt year was also important -- Sacca of all people
could have used that freshman year to do a little more growing up.

Massive short covering rally. They did a 1-for-20 reverse stock split last
month and the bears have painfully discovered that the float has been
significantly reduced.

Same thing is happening to Georgia Gulf Corporation (GGC) which did a 1:25
reverse split last week.

Hey Kevin & bobby D and others:
What percentage of reverse splits are successful? In my experience, not
many.

I believe this to be right. Engle was 3-0 versus Woody. And all were in
Columbus. <<
