At least he wasn't overserved at the pre-game tailgate!

I've never been ill-treated in eleven Big Ten road games.
When I was in Bloomington in 2002, LJ2K was running wild.
The only reason most IU fans were there was because they
had to buy a football ticket in order to purchase a ticket
for that evening's basketball exhibition against Athletes
in Action.

Funny story from Saturday: During the first drive Morelli
dropped back to pass and the guy behind me screamed, "Break
his leg and we'll win this game!"

I turned around and asked him who he was rooting for. He
was dressed head to toe in Illinois gear and looked at me
like I had a third eye. I waited a beat and said, "Just be
careful what you wish for."

Later, after J Lehman's interception, he leaned over and
said, "I'm glad we didn't break his leg!"

That's a very good?summary that puts it in perspective, Rocko.? The bottom line
is that both collapses were horrible and crushing to each team's fans.? It is as
if one guy got flattened by a 10,000?pound boulder and another guy got flattened
by a?11,000 pound boulder.? Is it worth debating which guy had it worse?? I was
taking sides earlier but I realize now it just doesn't?matter.?

Kevin,

Don't fault Brian for that claim. I have heard it repeated over and over in the
national media. The measure is that the Mets are the first team to ever blow a
7-game lead in the month of September. Granted, the Phils had a 6 1/2 game lead
with 12 to go, but 7 seems to be the largest lead ever squandered in the final
month of play.

It may be difficult to characterize one as worse than the other, but losing 6 of
your last 7 at HOME is pretty bad. The Mets lost 12 of their last 17, and the
'64 Phils lost 12 of their last 15, including 10 in a row. I lived through that
fiasco, so I will not say the Mets collapse was worse. Just that it has about
the same impact on their fans. What makes it even worse of the Mets is that they
didn't even qualify for the Wild-Card. In '64, you either won the pennant, or
went home. I am sure most Mets fans could not conceive of a situation two weeks
ago where they were not at least the wild-card team.

By what measure?

The 1964 Phillies' biggest lead was 7.5 games and it
happened as late as August 23rd. The 2007 Mets' biggest
lead was 7.0 games. The 1964 Phillies still led by 6.5 with
a dozen games to go. With 12 games to go in the 2007 Mets'
season they were up by just 1.5 games.

Just thought you'd want to be accurate in your glee. Enjoy.

Yes, they show a replay after every play at Michigan and

a review. Do they show the play over and over again in slow
motion from different angles? Because they don't appear to
do that in Big Ten stadiums.

Auburn put in a new HD display this year at Jordan-Hare Stadium and they
show ALL replays. Even if it is one that is questionable in favor of
the opponent - I can see where they would want to stop that in the
future. UF has smaller and more grainy replay boards. The only replays
that they showed were pro-UF replays and nothing reviewable unless they
thought UF would gain an advantage!

Do they show replays at The Swamp during a review? There
must be some kind of Big Ten policy against it, as there
weren't any replays during reviews at either Michigan or
Illinois. It's incredibly annoying. I have to call my Penn

Now are you in charge of the entire tailgate?

Or do you share responsibilities like the special teams coaching at

coaches up the salty snacks, another handles the red meats, etc.

That's true for all sports EXCEPT for two FB games I attended in
Orlando.... the one against Clemson where our entire offense was injured
prior to the game and the Auburn game when Johnson kept slipping on his
cutbacks.

Oh, the Alamo Bowl is December 29 so I figured I'd just stay over in SA

prices. I'm looking around now. SA is becoming a New Years eve place to
be I guess.

I am pretty sure the coaches have seen Morelli try to throw the fade in

If Bielema is sincere about unnecessary roughness, maybe we'll see
Wisconsin's defensive ends raise their heads instead of lower their
heads when they sack Morelli half a dozen times this year. I'm not
holding my breath.

To respond to BobbyD, yes, hard not to love the whoop-ass thing when
it's your defense doing it.

I can still remember Bruce Clark lifting some poor hapless (I think it
was Rutgers) quarterback over his shoulder and just pile driving him
into the turf at a 90 degree angle. We all screamed and yelled -- it
was a move worthy of the WWF.

Only years later did it occur to me how close Clark had probably come
to driving that quarterback's neck vertebra right into his brain.

I thought bobby meant that it's bad enough we (PSU alums & employees) have fans
who like pussy. Did I misread that? ;-)

Column ny Mike Hlas
The Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette
September 29, 2007

IOWA CITY--It has thoroughly loyal fans who make sure all
70,585 tickets are sold for every home contest.

It has a renovated stadium that houses lots of warm
memories and lends itself to a fine game-day atmosphere.

But something is missing these days when it comes to
University of Iowa football. It's called product.

When Iowa fans start clearing out of Kinnick Stadium before
an 11 a.m. Big Ten game is even done with the third
quarter, something's askew in Hawkdom.

The question no longer is if the Hawkeyes can go to a
January bowl again after the charitable invitation they got
from the Alamo Bowl last year. The question no longer is if
Iowa can seize the opportunity presented by a schedule
unpopulated by Ohio State or Michigan.

The question is if Kirk Ferentz and his assistants of
several years can do what they couldn't last year. Can they
stop a snowball rolling down a mountain from becoming an
avalanche.

What a dismal display by the Hawkeyes Saturday in Kinnick.
Indiana's 38-20 conquest may not have been as close as the
score indicates. The Hoosiers, not mistaken for USC or LSU
lately, played with confidence and competence. Good for
them. It's always heartening to see someone experience
growth. Indiana's team and fans will appreciate their bowl
trip in December.

But until it beats a good Big Ten team, Indiana is still
Indiana. So what does that make Iowa? A team that has lost
twice to the Hoosiers since its last Big Ten triumph,
that's what.

That's seven straight conference losses for the Hawks. Drop
this week's game at Penn State, and it's eight. That's an
entire Big Ten season. That's five years and a light year
from Iowa's 8-0 league mark of 2002.

The previous week's 17-13 defeat at Wisconsin was palatable
given the way Iowa battled. But it's as if the Hawkeyes
left their hearts in Madison. There hasn't been a worse
homecoming since John Belushi and his cohorts tore the
Faber College parade asunder in “Animal House.”

Iowa had a variety of bonehead penalties. Its two
place-kickers took turns hooking and shanking. Its defense,
for the first time all season, got outplayed. Its
quarterback demonstrated happy feet are nothing to smile
about.

Jake Christensen and Iowa's offense proved sacks
surrendered really are a team thing, since they yielded
almost one for each of the 11 players on offense. Nine
sacks for Indiana, none for the Hawkeyes. The program that
finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation three
straight seasons not that long ago got out-sacked, 9-0. To
Indiana.

We often err in claiming the sky is falling, but it sure
looked like chunks of fallen meteorite had littered the
Kinnick sod.

Ferentz, no fool, didn't try to portray this performance as
anything but a dud. He knows he can't sell injuries and
inexperience as excuses, not when ticket prices are what
they are and all of Western civilization seems to know his
salary.

“It's not an easy road," Ferentz said. “I really don't know
any magical solutions. Keep working at what you're doing
and try to do what you're doing better. As coaches we need
to make sure we give our guys the best possible plan they
can have.”

That tells us nothing, of course. But what wouldn't have
sounded hollow?

This was billed as a bounce-back year for the Hawks. The
only bouncing they've done is down to the Big Ten basement
at 0-2 with the remaining schedule looking fiercer by the
minute.

Christensen was a stand-up guy in facing the media after
the game but sounded as confounded as he and his team
played. Except when a television creature suggested all the
breaks went Indiana's way.

“I don't know about that," Christensen firmly said. “We had
a Hail Mary.”

Fellow sophomore QB Kellen Lewis of Indiana was the head of
his class this day. One of Lewis' few wrong moves was his
front somersault into the end zone after returning a
teammate's fumble a whole bunch of yards for a touchdown.
With the gymnastics came a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct
flag.

But even in style points, Lewis and the Hoosiers won big.
All Trey Stross did after being in the receiving end of
that “Hail Mary” to end the first half was spike the ball
with furious glee. Lewis' hot-dogging was premeditated.
Stross' was pure impulse.

Indiana didn't seem to sweat Lewis' antic. Iowa assistant
coach Eric Johnson, however, got in an unpleasant face-off
with Stross about his 15-yard infraction.

The way the rest of the Hawkeyes played and seemed to be
coached--or not coached--Johnson and his colleagues should
have gently scolded Stross, then thanked him for being
alert enough to give his team its lone score of the half.

Maybe this game was the darkest hour, with the dawn coming
this Saturday in State College where Ferentz's teams are
3-0. Verbal and typed shrapnel will fly the Hawkeyes' way
until then.

“Maybe longer," Ferentz said. “It's possible. We've got
great fans. They'll stay tough. But I understand, too, we
need to give them something to grab onto. That's our job
right now. That's what we'll work on. Nobody wants to hear
that right now, but the season's far from over.”

Whether that's a good thing is another question without an
answer right now.

A few things here:

A) My understanding is this is a Big Ten violation, not an
NCAA violation (anyone know how their eligibility rules
differ?), so the non-con games aren't under review.

B) I don't expect the result to be reversed because it's
Michigan. Likewise, if the shoe were on the other foot and
there was a chance to GIVE Michigan a game instead of take
one away, I'd be scared to death.

C) On the other hand, such reversals have happened before,
though not in football.

D) No way, no how would the Big Ten declare their
fair-haired child ineligible for the bowl based on those
first four games.

E) I would LOVE to see the game result reversed. Not for
the end of the streak--I was there, I know who won--but
rather because it would revitalize our season in the sense
we'd be back to saying, "Win out and we win at least a
share of the conference title." (a/k/a The Delusion Lives!)

F) On the other hand, the LAST thing this team needs is a
bad loss in a BCS bowl and such a smoking as inevitable.
We'd be much more competitive against a MAC team in the
Motor City Bowl. (Mark Cronmiller, who's hosting the
tailgate for that one, you or Scott?)

F) The whining from Michigan fans would be deafening...and
glorious.

G) If the Big Ten sets a precedent by declaring it OK to
use ineligible players, I say we bring back LJ2K for next
year's Michigan game.

Phillies. <<

Ken:

>> No way. As happy as I am with today's result, the Mets didn't match what "we"
did in 1964.

I well recall crying my eyes out into the pillow in my elementary school days as
the Phillies blew that 6 1/2 game lead with 12 to go. I was at just about every
night game that was not on a school night each season from 1963-1968. The Mets
collapse this year is memorable and horrible. But statistically, it cannot match
the Phillies fall in those last two weeks. <<

Thank you for acknowledging my intellectual superiority. ; )

You and Kevin have centered on some sort of quantification of "worst collapse
ever." Gene Mauch's 1964 fiasco happened outside of my natural lifetime (and
that of an increasing number of Phillie/Mets fans). In this example "we" extends
to the Phillies in the sense that I'd then have to take some sort of "ownership"
for anything that has transpired in the 100+ years of Philadelphia baseball
history. The broadcast announcers discussed other famous collapses by various
teams in the 1930's. Statistically interesting perhaps, but who cares.

Mets fans wanting to appease themselves by falling back on the consolation that
their collapse was somehow numerically "not so bad" is plain funny. Tee Hee!
