In 1980 Michigan lost their first two non-con games, then
won the last eight to capture the Big Ten title before
beating Washington in the Rose Bowl.

In 1988 Michigan lost their first two games, then closed
out the season with an 8-0-1 run to win the Big Ten before
beating Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl.

In 1998 Michigan lost their first two games, then won nine
of their next ten to win a share of the Big Ten
Championship. They capped the season by defeating Arkansas
in the Citrus Bowl.

In 2007 Michigan lost their first two games...

Walter Payton and John Elway?

I'm really willing to give the offense until the Big Ten opener. I
think Andrew Quarless will be a difference maker. I think he was one
last year in the final 4+ games.

They are different teams, obviously, but the 2005 team never got on
track offensively until the Minnesota game. We all had our chins in
our hands during the South Florida game. We groaned at the turnovers
during the Northwestern game. Even after the fourth down pass to
Smolko and TD pass to Williams to escape NW, we were really down on
the offense.

The problem this year is we haven't faced anyone. Same goes for
defense. People are ready to coronate this unit. I'll reserve
judgment until they've faced some Big Ten allowance. People have
continually said that Michigan's problem in the first two game is a
lack of speed on defense. I'd like to see how our D-line holds up
against an O-line that's built for the Big Ten like Michigan, Iowa
and Wisconsin. I'm afraid after FIU, ND and Buffalo we'll have no
indication of how good the defense will be.

well, when UM needed a QB to replace Henne (from PA, of course) it had no
problem coming into Texas to get the best one. Wasn't the Clemon WR kid a super
stud, too?

Michigan will continue to get more of who it wants that not ... especially when
Les Miles takes over in January.

Subject: [We Are...Penn State] Michigan talent (lack of it) from the BWI board

This from Marsh Creek Eagle of the BWI board. It was interesting enough that
I thought it was worth passing along in its entirety. He tends to overstate
his case sometimes but I think his point is good.

If Michigan's recruiting is in trouble, the rise of some other programs has
undoubtedly played a role. 10 years ago Michigan was pulling stars by the
dozen out of Texas and California. Now USC and Texas now beat Michigan for
recruits in the southwest and west. LSU is keeping its recruits home. Ohio
State locks up its home territory now -- for a Charles Woodson to go from
central Ohio to Michigan now would be unthinkable. Wisconsin, Iowa and even
Minnesota hold on to their in-state stars better than ever. There's always
talent in Fla. but more good programs competing for it than ever before.

People sometimes lament that PSU doesn't recruit nationally, but maybe
Michigan (and Notre Dame) illustrate the weakness of that approach.
Geography matters. All other things being equal, most recruits want to be
within driving distance of home so their families and friends can see them
play. When Michigan was playing in the Rose Bowl and PSU was suffering
losing seasons, there were things to outweigh geography. But with Michigan
mired in mediocrity, they become a tough sell. The frenzy of the Beav these
days may even outweigh the tradition of the Big House in recruit's minds.
And the plain uniforms are easily as cool as the Michigan helmets.

   ----------------------------------------------------------
Mich's big problem on D? Striking out on National recruits

I wrote this in another thread, but I thought it deserved its own place on
   this message board.

What is Michigan's biggest problem right now? They have struck out over and
over and over again with the Florida, Texas, California, Pennsylvania and
other national recruits they have spent so much time going after.

True, they are forced to go after national recruits, but when they can't
land them they are stuck. And right now they are stuck worse than a pig at
   at a Hawaiian Thanksgiving Feast.

When Michigan lost out on Justin King, they wound up with Brandon Harrison
and Johnny Sears. When Michigan lost out several national DT recruits, they
wound up with Greg Banks. When Michigan lost out on guys like Dan Connor and
Marcus Freeman they wound up with Obi Ezeh.

Michigan right now has far too many guys that were not even plan B guys, but
plan C guys. They might have had the plan B guys had they paid attention to
them, but they don't. Their "all in" approach with the national recruits has
a deep dark downside to it, and they are in it right now.

Here is a list of stiffs - STIFFS - that Michigan has signed on defense in
   recent years:

Will Johnson - to be fair, he did suffer an acl tear, but he was mediocre
   anyway

   Roger Allison - he's gone

Morgan Trent - super fast, but he's marginal in coverage and can't tackle

Charles Stewart - safety, would not play here at Penn State but he starts
   for Michigan

Mike Massey - on ability alone would be 3rd team here

Johnny Thompson - takes horrible angles, doesn't tackle well, he'd have no
prayer of playing here right now because he's just slow

Chris Rogers - transferred to PSU, deep reserve here

Tim Jaimeson isn't a total stiff, but hardly a playmaker either. he wouldn't
   start here at PSU

James McKinney and Eugene Germany aren't even there any more

Chris Richards and Johnny Sears are probably the two worst CB's they have
   recruited in years

Marques Slocum - he can play a little, but can he get on the field?

Brandon Harrison - he got slower at Michigan, not good when you are a 5-8
   cornerback

Brandon Graham - starting DE. Not a playmaker, gets run over half the time.

   Chris McLaurin - gone

Cobrani Mixon and Quentin Patilla are a pair of slow LB's who are out of
their program now, but they'd never have played anyway.

John Ferrara - Marc Keilmeyer clone, you figure it out. But yet this guy has
to play a LOT right now in his 2nd year on campus because they have nobody
   better.

Obi Ezeh, LB, and Greg Banks, DE - things are so bad in A2 that these two
guys start on that defense. They are both young and only one of the two has
been arrested so far, so there is hope for their 4th and 5th year that they
   might be decent.

Jason Kates - ACCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. You have to be friggin'
   kidding me.

Keston Cheatem - wasn't a player to begin with. kicked off team

Ryan Mundy - transferred to West Virginia

Brandent Englemon - ACK, and he's starts for them!

Shawn Crable - all airport guy, mediocre game to go with his good looks.

Doug Dutch - converted from WR, he never even plays. I stated loud and clear
a few years ago that this guy was a stiff who would never start at this
   level.

Austin Panter - they are so bad that this guy is backing up two LB
   spots!!!!!! ACCKKKKKKKKKK.

These are the majority of the defensive players that Michigan has that are
not true freshmen. Most of these guys would have trouble starting at mid
   level Big10 programs.

I have to chuckle. I used to write that little list of Tom Beaver's "Best
Guess" guys, and Michigan would invariably strike out on most of them. Then
Beaver would try to shine a turd when Michigan would offer some guy in mid
January and he'd try and fool all their fans into thinking the guy was a
   stud.

Their defense is a joke right now - a couple of decent youngsters mixed in
with a lot of non players, and this is a MULTI YEAR PROBLEM for them. Their
2007 defense might be worse than the one we had in 2001, they are that bad.

Michigan has already started playing true freshmen, witness Donovan Warren
starting (and making mistakes) against Oregon, and this will become a trend
for that program over the next few years as they try to climb back to
   respectability with that defense.

Penn State may well have two of the nation's top 5 linebackers this

getting the mother load of recruits this year. like urban meyer and pete

i don't care what anybody says, we have the best fans in college football,
period. you know that a 17-18 year experiences that and the hair stands up on
the back of his neck. they gotta be higher then high.

of course then they finally get to meet galen hall. hall has one admirer in

and even though we are the best the atmosphere is pretty dame good at the

we gotta get with it. this could really be our time.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Blocking Ability

Walker has very good size, good speed, and super hands.
Walker is tough in the air, shows excellent concentration,
and has great field awareness. He will go over the middle,
take the short pass and make you miss and beat you deep. In
the open field he shows good quickness and change of
direction. Defensively, Walker has a real knack for going
to get the ball. He can play zone or play man. He has fluid
hips and the ability to turn and run.

Once again, Kev, you got it wrong. MRob would NOT have lost
to USC or Texas that year as we (folks say we when they have
actually attended the school) were the better team.

Study up on your training techniques. I doubt that players get
stronger in the weight room by playing with lesser weights like
FIU, Buffalo, or Temple. They get stronger by playing with the
Heavy weights. Maybe ask a Marine like Dave about getting
stronger in training. I don't think it is by having those guys
carry around the 5 pound fanny packs.

We should schedule teams like Rutgers, West Virigina, Georgia, Florida, etc.

for our three out of conference slaughters we should play FAU, FIU, and
Lynne. Lynne isn't much but they recruit babes from all over the world. by the

this way we could get good PR in florida and maybe pick off one of those

Subject: No Bull: Buffalo Likely to Struggle
nittanykat@...
Send Email Send Email

Centre Daily Times; Sept. 11, 2007
No Bull:? Buffalo Likely To Struggle?

The last time Turner Gill visited Beaver Stadium, his team was able to run the
football successfully against Penn State.

Unfortunately for Gill -- then Nebraska's quarterbacks coach -- those 252 yards
on the ground didn't help the Cornhuskers in a 40-7 loss to the Nittany Lions in
2002.

Saturday, Gill returns to University Park, this time at the head of a Buffalo
program trying to climb out of the Division I-A basement. And no one is running
for much of anything on the current Penn State defense, which has allowed a net
minus-3 yards rushing in its first two games.

Here's what to expect from the last team Penn State will play before opening its
Big Ten season.

Offense

Gill, in his second season at Buffalo, replaced Gerald Carr as offensive
coordinator during the offseason and hired longtime Canadian Football League
coach Danny Barrett to coach the quarterbacks.

Though ambling junior quarterback Drew Willy is in no danger of torching
offenses via the option, a la Gill, he is a career 60 percent passer who
completed 20 of 22 passes during last week's 42-7 win at Temple. Wideouts Ernest
Jackson (6-foot-2) and Brett Hamlin (6-1), with eight catches apiece, have been
his favorite targets to this point.

Mario Henry, a converted defensive back, has added burst to the running game.
The Erie native ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries against the
Owls' porous defense. Four of the five starters on a huge offensive line started
last year.

Defense

Another former Husker standout, Jimmy Williams, coordinates a defense that was
100th in the nation in rushing defense last season (184.8 yards per game) and
was gashed for 235 yards rushing in the season-opening loss to speedster Ray
Rice and Rutgers.

The Nittany Lions should see a standard 4-3 this week. Senior defensive end
Trevor Scott has 11 sacks in his last 14 games, but the rest of the Buffalo
front is suspect and the linebacking corps, led by solid senior Ollice Ervin,
has been pieced together. Athletic safeties Kareem Byrom and Mike Newton have
had to make too many tackles.

Special teams

Senior punter Ben Woods has been solid so far (a 43.7-yard average on 10 kicks).
A.J. Principe, who made his only field goal attempt of the season against
Rutgers, is a true freshman.

Naaman Roosevelt, a wide receiver who doubles as the team's backup quarterback,
is a better kickoff and punt returner than he has shown this season.

Skinny

Buffalo probably isn't as bad as it showed in the 38-3 loss to Rutgers or as
good as it was against hapless Temple. Henry is an upgrade at tailback but
hasn't seen a front seven like the one Penn State will line up. Buffalo's front
seven is ill-equipped to shut down the Nittany Lions' running game or -- with
the possible exception of Scott -- provide much pressure on quarterback Anthony
Morelli. The Nittany Lions will look to take some momentum into Ann Arbor and
they should get it against the Bulls.

Temple has spent DECADES playing teams that are "much
better" than they are. By your "logic" Temple should be
very, very, very strong by now. They should be NFL strong.

I wouldn't have bet if I'd known Notre Dame was going to
get pounded by GaTech. I assumed a point spread for the ND
game of 8-9, making under 90 a hugely +EV wager. At -17 it
was about break-even.

Hmmm...not by playing Buffalo. I said that they will get stronger. I won my PSU
dorm Chess championship, but that doesn't mean that I can beat Dave K, yet. If
Dave K lost 5 pounds each week, you still would not call him a thin man at the
end of the football season.

I disagree with this as a blanket statement. I thought the
2005 non-con schedule (South Florida, Cincinnati, and
Centreal Michigan) was perfect FOR THAT TEAM. It allowed
them to have some success, build some confidence, and have
some momentum heading to the Big Ten season. It was a
classic Paterno team that was better in the last half of
the season than it was in the first half. I think it would
have hindered the development of MRob & Company if they'd
gotten waxed in September by USC, Texas, etc.

And yet every big team schedules two or three games like
that.

Did you know Notre Dame is part of our non-con schedule?
Did you know we've got Alabama on the horizon?

Did anyone tape the PSU Football Story?
Would like to see it. Thought I had set the VCR to tape, but
I suspect the children pulled the tape to watch something else.
Thanks.

Scott, I don't know who you'd mean. Still tore an ACL so he's got to
be done for the year. Koroma fractured his leg -- I saw somewhere it
was a stress fracture. Those babies are not fast to heal.

I doubt Quarless plays much the first half of the season. It wasn't
just drinking, it's that he sneaked out on a curfew night the last
week of preseason practice. That's a really critical time, and it
suggests Quarless really doesn't (or didn't) get what football is
about at this level.

Penn State now finally has enough talent that they don't have to play
kids who aren't committed to winning -- even if they are as talented
as Quarless. If Shuler can do a credible job, Quarless will have a
tough time getting on the field very much -- and that may be the
feeling of the players just as much as the coaches.

I hope he does make it back for later in the season because Morelli
obviously likes throwing to him.

The key to the PSU at Mich game is who each is playing this week. We are
playing Buffalo, a team we will beat by 50 points and Mich is playing
Notre Dame... It could be a 0-0 tie at the half but they will have
worked hard for it. Mich will play first string the entire game. Those
ND thugs will lay out the Mich FB and maybe whoever else is holding them
from the QB.

Out first string will be out in the second qtr.

We'll come in fresh from cleaning up the stadium (the last time if they
beat Mich).

how much does a standing room only ticket cost?

--
Actually, I believe there are no standing room only tickets. If I am wrong,
someone please correct me. In the NCAA, one counts football attendees by the
total number of human beings at the game. That includes reporters, recruits
and anyone else. So the number goes up for big games.

I was pretty sure, while watching the UofM game, that I saw a Michigan receiver

Normally, PSU isn't big on getting kids from Junior colleges.
Are Nerraw McCormack and Ako Poti making a difference?

What's up with that J.B. Walton fellow? I thought he would be
in there by now.
