Jay Herman:

>> If I had one question to ask Joe it would be "Why
the heck can't you stop anyone on 3rd & long?"<<

Immediately after the game:

Q: Why did they have such success on third and long?

JoePa: Third and 22 and they throw behind you in a
zone--you tell me. There were a couple things that
bothered me.

Tuesday:

Q: The defense had some trouble last year on third
down and long and Central Florida was successful on
several long third down plays. Have you been able to
determine why that is happening?

JoePa: It was just lousy execution by a couple of guys
who fell asleep. Third and 22 and you let a guy get
behind you and you are in a simple zone. They are a
good, well-organized, precise passing team with an
excellent quarterback and good wideouts. You expect
certain things to happen to you. At the end of the
game they get behind you with a 40-yard pass, third
down and 20, and make two plays that should have never
happened. It just shouldn't happen. I wish I could
tell you why it happened. A couple of kids just fell
asleep or lost their concentration. Maybe nothing
could happen on third and 20, I don't know. Your
analysis that we had trouble last year and had trouble
Saturday is exactly right. If we are going to get to
be pretty good, we have to eliminate those kinds of
things.

>> "Change is hard to come by, and it should be hard
to come by," said Florida State University SID Rob
Wilson, who supports the decision. "You don't want to
make a change like this flippantly."<<

Wilson was quoted extensively in this article, which
leads me to believe he has some measure of influence
on the NCAA statistics staff. If my perception is
correct, don't hold your breath waiting for a
legitimate accounting of Bobby Bowden's major-college
victories.

>>NCAA Director of Statistics Jim Wright said the
change will not be retroactive.<<

This is an absolutely bizzare decision. If you're
going to count post-season stats, count them all.

Interestingly, the NCAA has always counted post-season
wins and losses in team and coaching statistics, but
never included the individual totals. Strange stuff.
Of course, this is the same group which counts wins
against the University of Mexico and Tennessee Tech's
B Team as major-college victories.

>> JOE CHOSE TO HAVE AN OPEN DATE. PENN STATE DID NOT
HAVE TO ALLOW VIRGINIA OUT OF THE CONTRACT TO PLAY ON
SEPTEMBER 7. TO BE "NICE GUYS" WE DID IT--WITHOUT
COMPENSATION EXCEPT A "THANK YOU".<<

Q: Can you go over the circumstances in which the
Virginia game was moved to November 9th and how you
feel about having an open week this week?

JoePa: That was not our doing. I would have preferred
we played Virginia this Saturday. Virginia told us
that they had scheduled South Carolina inadvertently
the same date that they had scheduled us and asked if
we would let them out of it? My first reaction to it
was, "No." We went through this last year when we
postponed the Virginia game because of the tragedy in
New York City. It took us a long time to recover from
that because we had to play a Wisconsin team with
three games under its belt when we just had the one.
Now we are going through the same thing. We are going
to play a Nebraska team a week from this coming
Saturday, a team which will have had three games while
we will have had one. I was not for it, but supposedly
there was no way they could get out of the contract or
whatever the reasons were. It was worked out between
the athletic directors and certainly I said, "OK"
where we would postpone it, but I wasn't happy about
it.

Nebraska senior running back Thunder Collins, who was suspended for
last Saturday's game against Troy State, has been suspended for three
additional games because of an undisclosed NCAA rules violation.
Collins, who appeared in court yesterday due to his failure to
complete a domestic violence program resulting from an alleged
assault on his girlfriend, will miss this weekend's game against Utah
State, and games against Penn State and Iowa State as well. Collins'
will stand a trial on the refilled charges, but his suspension,
however, is not related to his legal issues. He did not practice with
the team yesterday and it is unknown when he will be able to start
practicing again.

1. Caller wanted to make comments re: 3rd and long. Why don't the
cornerbacks do more bump and run against a precise passing attack, and why
not have a safety/LB type like Jimi Mitchell play in the middle to at least
tackle the guy when he catches the ball? Joe replied that we did try a
little bump and run, and we did have a nickle back "Young Paul Cronin"- who
Joe did say that he made a big mistake on the one thrid and long. Joe said
it was not the schemes but the execution- our biggest problem is having
three young players who made some mistakes. JOe appreciated that callers
concerns and wants just as much to get them corrected.

2. Tell us more about Paul Cronin? He is a kid we did not have a scholarship
for, but has managed to get a chance to play. Every year a walk-on or two
makes an impact on the team.Said we played as amany as four or five former
walk-ons (Joe's tone suggested he thought this was a good thing). Mentioned
Gardner as one.

3. What is team attitude this week? Joe is pleased. He worked the team very
hard for three days. They have worked hard and very responsive. People don't
realize this tream is basically two plays away from having an 8 game winning
streak- the long throw with Illinois and the fumble return at UVa. The team
sometimes gets a little tired, but Joe relies on the older kids to make the
younger ones realize how hard they have to play. Joe said they had a few
drills this week where "maybe I risked hurting a couple older players in
some pretty tough drills so the younger players would see just how hard they
have to go during a game".

4. Caller thanked Joe for playing Stewart, and wanted to know how good
Haynes can be? Joe said Lamar is doing well although he is deealing with the
death of his grandmother this week. Haynes can be as good as anybody- agains
UCF theUCF line was really concentrating on blocking Kennedy and Adams and
Haynes took advantage of his chances. The only criticism Joe has had of
Haynes in the past is not always being intense.

5. Caller liked the fact Joe played MR. Joe said again he thinks MR is a
great athlete and wanted to play him more but UCf made it close, so MR
didn't get as much playing time.

6. Caller concerned that defensive calls were coming in very late during
UCF's last two drives. Joe didn't think that was occuring. We constantly
practice getting signals in quickly against no-huddle type offenses- often
the defensive call is just a one-word code like "Geronimo" or "Brooklyn".
Joe thought the signals were getting in fine.

7. Caller thought team was very close to totally dominating the game
offensively. Is Joe happy with the play of the defensive line and back
field? Joe felt the fumbles didn't help. We did not win the turnover battle.
Joe felt we had control of the game. It was disappointing when we did
nothing after the big KO return. We had a few mistakes like that kept us
from accomplishing all we could have.Joe said he was happy with the
defensive line. People don't realize how good Schneider is, and how despite
being blitzed about 70 times last year he only got sacked once. Joe feels
the d-backs were OK but obviously have to get better on third down.

8. What tapes are you watching and how is Maurice Humphries? Joe is watching
Nebraska only. He only has the ASU TV game so far- they will get the game
tape from this weekends game on Sunday. Joe said Humphries is a partial
qualifier so he will not play this year but Joe thinks he will be a very
good player.

9. Does Joe think division I-AA is getting more competitive with I-A? Joe
says yes- with the 85 man limit and good coaching in the I-AA ranks the
difference is shrinking. Joe said Toledo beat us because they were
physically stronger and executed better. He said schools like Marshall, even
Villanova have come a long way.

10. Reminisicing- an oldtimer talked about watching Rip Engle coach at Brown
during Joe's days on the team. Joe enjoyed the story but said "that only
means something to you and me- we just put 50,000 people asleep!"

11. Dp you guys signal in the defenses with those card they hold up? Joe
says no- those cards are for the TV guys making the tapes to describe the
formation going in.

Joe had to leave early since he has another commitment. He apologized and
said he was embarassed to admit he forgot the show would be on during the
off week and fortunately someone reminded him.
Joe and Steve briefly discussed the need to do better on third and long.

     Jeff Nelson stopped in:

On Friday before Nebraska there will be a pep rally after the women's
volleyball game against Villanova which is Friday night at 7:30. Coach
Paterno and the players will be there at 9:00. So everyone turn out and
support the volleyball team and the pep rally in Rec Hall. The "Rally in the
Valley".

Also, the 1982 national championship team will be in town next weekend
for their 20th anniversary. Many of the players will be in town.

Jeff nelson expects a full press box next weekend. The game is a
sellout. Tickets are available for other home games due to returns by the
visiting teams. 76% of the country is scheduled to get the game- everybody
else gets Texas Vs. North Carolina. The press box holds 200. Steve asked how
many press people have showed up (what's the record). Jeff said 600 for the
Kickoff classic against Arizona, and about 598 for Miami last year. Doesn't
expect quite that many for Nebraska.

End...

I would say Joe is pretty happy with this team. He sounded fairly
confident and seemed to think the team was practicing well.

I might add at this point I had an opportunity to talk to someone today
who would have some good private (in other words valid) insight into the
program and what Joe and the coaches are thinking. The basic "inside scoop"
was that Joe and the coaches felt that they could pretty much have done
whatever they wanted offensively against UCF especially with the passing
game. They wanted to work LJ more and also give MR some opportunities.

I can post this on Scurry's message board but don't want to do it if people

I don't know if these moves are permanent but T Veloski(sp) was moved from
defense to right guard (3rd team) behind Reed and Lenda. Evidently they want to
give Rush and some of the True freshman more work on the D-line. Marmo & S Davis
have been moved to the scout team. Davis is bummed out about the situation at
LG in preseason and Marmo just seems to have lost his desire. A real shame for
both (although the little I have seen of Marmo has not impressed me but still a
shame for the kid).

Funny how some of us have been calling for such a move for 2 years to (1)
give Tyler a shot at real playing time since he was never going to get much
at DT and (2) to get Rush et al some serious reps at DT ... good move IMO,
for I feared that Rush would sit for 2 full years after watching the UCF game

Based on the depth chart from the UCF game Rush would still be #3 behind
Kennedy and Falls. Jason Robinson would take Valoczki's #2 spot behind Adams.

I hope no one thinks I was wrong in my analysis. PSU - and you KNOW that
means Joe agreed - made the judgment to move the game when they did not have
to do so. We did it voluntarily.

Nittany Lions focused on Huskers' special teams
By Marc Weiszer
mweiszer@...

By Marc Weiszer
mweiszer@...
UNIVERSITY PARK -- It's been 25 games since anyone took a punt return and went
the distance against Penn State. Go back to Nov. 20, 1999 when Michigan State's
Gari Scott returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown to help stake the Spartans
to a 21-0 lead and win a wild 35-28 game.
Nebraska will test the Nittany Lions with a game-breaking threat. DeJuan Groce
ranked ninth nationally in punt returns last season and returned two punts for
touchdowns in the Cornhuskers' 31-16 victory over Troy State last Saturday.
More food for thought for Penn State to digest during this bye week is the game
film of Nebraska's 48-10 victory over Arizona State. The Corhuskers blocked a
pair of punts leading to two touchdowns.
"It's something we're going to focus on," said fullback Sean McHugh, who is on
the punt coverage team. "Coach (Joe) Paterno always tells us that games are
lost, they're not won, on special teams. That's an area we're focusing on really
hard right now and want to be flawless in every aspect of it."
Groce, in his third year as a starter at cornerback, also returned two punts for
touchdowns last season, including a
71-yard return against Miami in the Rose Bowl.
"The return guy is great and the people up front are very quick and active and
they have an excellent scheme," Paterno said. "There's no question about that.
And if we can't do a good job, the kicking game will beat us. I don't think we
can win that kicking game but hopefully we can stay close in it."
"I don't know that there's been a team that's gotten off to a better start than
this team has gotten off to, special teams-wise," Nebraska coach Frank Solich
said. "I think they're a very confident group."
Mills takes a licking, keeps clicking
At Urbana High School in Ijamsville, Md., coach Dave Carruthers won back-to-back
state titles with Zack Mills at quarterback. Carruthers took advantage of Mills'
athleticism by sending Mills on designed keepers. But he avoided running the
option with Mills because he didn't want to risk Mills taking too many hits.
"I'm not crazy about them running the option," Carruthers said a few weeks ago.
"That's high risk, I think. You have to have a couple of good durable
quarterbacks to do that."
In Penn State's 27-24 win over Central Florida in the season opener, Mills
showed that he can take some pretty good hits. He was drilled in the head on a
jarring blow by UCF linebacker Stanford Ruhle on a forward option pitch to Larry
Johnson that the tailback took 23 yards for a touchdown.
"Zack is a tough kid," McHugh said. "You think of a quarterback and you don't
think exactly of a tough guy but he'll take a lot of hits. I don't think
anyone's really worried about it. Obviously you don't want your quarterback
taking too many hits, especially hits to the head or the upper body but we have
confidence in Zack and his toughness. ... Sometimes taking a hit like that is
what springs a back for a run instead of pitching the ball early."
On Penn State's first offensive play, Mills dropped in the pocket and then took
off for a 15-yard gain before running out of bounds and getting hit late on the
sideline.
"Zack's a very tough and competitive guy so I kind of knew he was going to get
up from a lot of them," redshirt freshman back-up quarterback Michael Robinson
said. "But at the same time you have to always keep your head in the game and
know that at any time one of those hits can ring a bell a little bit."
Extra points
Officials from ESPN's Gameday haven't contacted Penn State to express interest
about broadcasting on-site from the Nebraska game, which will be nationally
televised in prime time on ABC. Gameday was at Penn State for the 1999 Pigskin
Classic against Arizona. Other attractive matchups on Sept. 14 include
Michigan-Notre Dame and Washington State-Ohio State.

Yeah, it's bizarre. They had only five non-con games
to schedule and "accidentally" signed two contracts
for the same day?!? This is like forgetting you bought
a new Mercedes and purchasing another three days

Oh well, no sense in worrying about it, as our
schedule is what it is. Speculating on the effect it
will have on the outcome of the Nebraska and Virginia

I thought most of you would be amused with the new restrictions that ND has
set for football tailgates. We all have some unruly fans who, probably via
the alcohol route, go overboard in their partying. ND, evidently has more
of these than their desire for a squeaky clean image allows, so they have
placed some new restrictions on tailgating.

First - No persons will be allowed in the parking areas during the game.
This means that if a group wants to have a good time tailgating and some
might not have tickets for the game, Those without can not stay in the lots
during the game.
Second - All students who wish to attend a tailgate MUST regester with
Student affairs prior. They have also designated a student only tailgate
area where no persons other than students may group. Students can tailgate
only in this area. This means that if a student has family or friends come
to the game, the student can not meet them for tailgating. The students are
also required to have their ID on their posession at all time.

This is classic ND reaction. If a situation fails to meet with their
wishes, they merely ban it or limit it to the max. My wife is convinced
they will ban tailgating althgether sooner or later.

BTW - ND tailgaters are absolute PIGS. If one were to see the parking areas
after the game you'd know what I mean. After a game at Beaver Stadium, a
vast amount of the inevitable trash is fairly neatly bagged up and left in
piles in the parking areas. Since the tailgates that I generally attend are
among the last to break up, I can see what it looks like. The ND parking
areas, after the game have loose trash from one end to another. Maybe ND
needs to be a bit more pro-active and have someone pass trash bags around,
except that the term "pro-active" is not in the ND vocabulary.

I was in the Freshman section in 82 on the rail right in front of "stone
hands" when he caught the winning TD. I need to tape the game and see if I
see my self. :-) This is one of my all time favorite regular season PSU
wins!

Peter,

You must have been standing right next to be at that game, as I was leaning
against the same rail.

Well, hail to you guys on the rail in the Freshman section! Did you help
me rip down the goalposts? I was 10 rows up in the Junior section at
about the ten yard line. I was a pledge at my fraternity (Phi Sigma Kappa)
at the time, and me and a bunch of my fraternity brothers had painted our
chests
P-E-N-N-(CBS EYE)-S-T-A-T-E-#1 . Unfortunately, I don't get ESPN classic
here in Northern VirginiaI though. If you see a bunch of bare-chested
bozos on the broadcast in the student section, I was the "P" (which
unbeknownst to others stood for Pledge ;-)
I can also boast of being in the middle of the raucos mob who ripped down
the goalposts at that end of the field and paraded the whole thing to Old
Main lawn. Somebody gave us a hack saw and we sawed off a two foot portion
and displayed it above the bar in our fraternity house for years to come
with the date and score. I was most disappointed to discover that it was
removed a few years ago during my last visit to the old fraternity house on
South Allen St.
What pleasant memories! Hopefully we can rekindle that spirit with a big
"W" over the Huskers next weekend! I'll be in the north upper deck for
that one.

Anybody else notice that Horace Dodd (former Penn Stater who transferred to
Boston College) had 8 yards on 6 carries versus powerful UConn?

Of interest to those of us in SE Pennsylvania: last weekend C.B. East got
rolled by Reading H.S. and C.B. West got decimated versus St. Joseph's Prep.
All the quotes in the paper after the C.B. West game came from former head
coach Pettine, which begs the question of why Randy Cuthbert would have
allowed this situation to develop. Imagine Fran Ganter takes over and hires
Joe Pa as defensive coordinator. -- Doylestown Brian

No question about it. Best football game of all time for
me.
I was eyeing the 5 yard line half way up, student section.
Next week (if memory serves), Sports Illustrated has one its
best covers ever:

Prodigious Penn State!

I still have that issue tucked away for safe keeping.

Bill Gross of Pacific Investment Mangagement Company
(PIMCO) is the world's premier bond fund manager. He
created quite a stir on Wall Street yesterday with the
release of his monthly market commentary, this one
entitled "Dow 5000."
http://makeashorterlink.com/?X308258B1

In the article, Gross argues that stock valuations are
still way too high, due in part to "earnings of the
'mystical' kind--pro forma, operating, phonied up."

So it is with college football, where flashy
non-conference records are all too often "phonied up"
with victories against the Tulsas and Wyomings of the
college football world. What follows are "adjusted"
non-con standings. You get credit for beating a Big
Six confence opponent or Notre Dame. And all losses
count.

Adjusted Big Six Non-Con Standings
(Through games of September 5th)

Pac-10 (4-2)
Big Ten (2-2)
Big XII (2-5)
ACC (2-5)
Big East (1-3)
SEC (1-4)

Compare that with the non-con standings which include
all games:

Big Ten (10-2)
Pac-10 (8-2)
Big East (7-3)
SEC (7-4)
Big XII (7-5)
ACC (5-5)

Breakdown by opponent

Pac-10
vs SEC (2-0)
vs Big East (1-0)
vs Big XII (1-1)
vs ACC (0-0)
vs Notre Dame (0-0)
vs Non-Big Six (*-0)
vs Big Ten (0-1)

Big Ten
vs Pac-10 (1-0)
vs Big XII (1-1)
vs Notre Dame (0-0)
vs ACC (0-0)
vs SEC (0-0)
vs Big East (0-0)
vs Non-Big Six (*-1)

Big XII
vs Pac-10 (1-1)
vs Big Ten (1-1)
vs Notre Dame (0-0)
vs SEC (0-0)
vs Big East (0-0)
vs ACC (0-1)
vs Non-Big Six (*-2)

ACC
vs Big XII (1-0)
vs Big Ten (0-0)
vs Pac-10 (0-0)
vs Big East (0-0)
vs Notre Dame (0-1)
vs SEC (1-1)
vs Non-Big Six (*-3)

Big East
vs SEC (1-0)
vs ACC (0-0)
vs Big XII (0-0)
vs Big Ten (0-0)
vs Notre Dame (0-0)
vs Pac-10 (0-1)
vs Non-Big Six (*-2)

SEC
vs Big East (0-1)
vs ACC (1-1)
vs Notre Dame (0-0)
vs Big XII (0-0)
vs Big Ten (0-0)
vs Non-Big Six (*-0)
vs Pac-10 (0-2)

*Wins against Non-Big Six conferences are not counted.

Kevin,

Excellent work!

This puts things into perspective much better than straight wins.

In a way, this is a variation of wins vs. Top 25.

The only weak link would be wins against the bottom feeders
of the conferences like Temple, Rutgers, Northwestern, etc.

But I like this a lot.
This is the kind of stat that, if adopted, would get ADs to
consider better scheduling vs. the non-Big 6.

Nicely done - and I did like the stock market reference!

God Bless,

Tom

And I note that Virginia was ready to play yesterday,
upsetting #19 South Carolina 34-21. BTW, Matt Schaub
won back his starting spot at QB and threw three TDs
to lead the Cavs to victory. So much for theory that
we should play them now before redshirt freshman
Marques Hagans gets too much experience.

Actually it will NEVER be known, since we don't have a
time machine to go back and replay it with the UVA
game on the 7th. If we lose to Nebraska, any talk
about the effect of not playing UVA yesterday will be
pointless speculation and, as you stated, silly. Ditto
if we beat Nebraska.

Amen, brother, amen.

Yes, they were impressive. Dorsey does a nice job, but
I'm guessing there are a lot of guys who could do well
with as much time as he usually has to throw.

My favorite part of the telecast was the analyst
opining that both QBs are better when they have time
to set up and get a good look at the secondary rather
than trying to throw under pressure. You don't say!
Where ARE all those QBs who are better with a man in
their face than when they can stand there all day and
pick out a receiver?

BTW, are they having a drought in Florida? The field
appeared to be nothing more than dirt painted green.
