Assunto: [WaveskiUSA] VERY Important USWA Information. We will be closing this USWA Yahoo site and....

We have our own REAL forums up and running! Even though our yahoo
group's site has done a fine job for developing a place to meet it
does lack much in the communication department. So here it is, our NEW
United States WaveSki Association web site (work in progress) will be
here and THE NEW HOME OF THE USWA FORUMS ARE UP AND RUNNING! It's all
ours, feel free to start signing on and start posting now.

Also PLEASE remember to fill in the city and state info along with
other information on the sign up page. It will help us identify you
and prevent anyone from getting booted off as a spammer.

Don't forget to thank USWA member Warren for the hard work he is
putting into this!

Have Fun!

Does the waveski height above the water also matter?

I am 5'6" paddling a 6'4" (193cm)paddle.  It feels like it's too short when paddling around the RTM waveski which sits pretty high in the water compared to an Island Waveski. I'll have to measure it next time probably no more than a couple of inches.   Now when I use he same padde in my white water boat which where I sit below the water line the paddle feels just right.  There has to be alteast a 6" difference in height between the white water boat and the waveski.

That would be like a 152 cm paddle. That just sounds waaaay too short. I would
suspect
rolling would be a real problem with a paddle that short. About the shortest
paddles I've
heard of are in the 180 range, but I'm sure there are guys surfing with 175's
etc.

But 152 just doesn't sound right to me.

Stopped by a local surf shop that's rumored tb stocking
Infinity's ski soon.

Guy said he had a batch of special-order paddles coming from
Werner that he had made up so they're only five feet long.

Says that what the locals are going to.

I've always been partial to short paddles but my idea of "short"
is more like a 191 (6'3").

Is anybody here using a five-foot paddle?

If so, how do you like it?

Conditions were a little tougher than expected this Saturday. I
showed up about 8:30 AM and jumped in for a paddle in my white water
boat. It was too windy to try the waveski. Paddling out through
the surf was easier than I expected but there was no way I would be
able to keep up with the current and wind that was pushing me north.
I almost made it to the outside but decided to catch a wave back in
instead and headed back to the beach. I must have drifted about half
a mile in 15 mins and exited right in front of Natural Art Surf shop.

I stashed the boat behind the bushes and started walking back to
Island Waveski. I saw Steve drive by giving me a funny look. I was
still wearing all my gear and carrying a paddle walking down the
street. Then a pick up truck pulled in and it was Roy from Island
Waveski offering me a ride. I jumped in the back and we headed to the
shop. Needless to say...conditions weren't quite right for going out
today. I headed back for my boat and met up with Steve.

Gordon, Steve and I were at the Island waveski shop and Roy showed us
a couple of recently shaped waveskis and answered plenty of questions.
Then Stu showed up to Shape Steve's waveski and that's how we spent
the morning. It was pretty cool to watch the shaping process.
Pictures below.

http://picasaweb.google.com/wilanz/CocoaBeachExpressionSessionJune22007

A couple of other folks showed up. Les, Kyle, Dave, Frank. We tried
one more round in the ocean with similar results. Drifting and
walking. The group then headed over to Taco City for lunch.

Not a lot of surfing this session but we still made the best of it.

See you at the next one.

William

sustained vs available speed...

dont know if this is official terms but theyre what i use.

a longboard is faster than a shortboard right? some may say yes, while
others will say no. lets narrow it down then, where is a long board
faster than a shortboard? in a straight line down the wave. this is
sustained speed. the board keeps this speed but is out of the critical
part of the wave.

then you look at a shortboard and it is MUCH faster, but only in the
pocket. this is because of the size and maneuverability of the
shortboard. hence i call it available speed, the size and looseness of
the board allow it to be in the critical part of the wave where the
most power is.

And if you don't, at least wear enough rubber to float your

Paoli, PA - about 23 miles west of Philadelphia.

Two main venues have become Brigantine - near the Absecon Inlet
jetty when it's 4' or less and a place called Strathmere when
it's over 4' (kinder, gentler waves on the "outside" there....)

I think it's coming along. Some guy made my day on Thursday. He
was the first waveskier I'd seen so far - was paddling one of
Island's (Cocoa Beach..) skis and clearly had been at it for
quite awhile - or, at least, the ski had been at it for awhile.

Asked him to name something that he observed me doing wrong
waveski-technique-wise and the guy says "Nothing!.... You look
like you've been doing this for *years*."

Ok, he so he wasn't that observant.... but I still had trouble
getting my head through the door of my car afterwards... -)

Hi, Brian & the whole gang -

This is Don, your SW FL guy with the weird see-through kayaks. I just
posted a couple of new videos on You Tube - they're not surfing
videos, but they are kayaking videos. Our club (SWFLPC) did a
Memorial Day weekend camping trip to Chassahowitzka, in west central
Florida, and I got some video footage. I thought you guys might like
to see the videos I just uploaded to You Tube. I hope you all enjoyed
the slide program video of the USWA Cocoa Beach competition, and the
little clip of Pam rolling. If you haven't seen them, just go to
these videos, and click on "more from this user". The links:

Hi Scott. The good news is, I am right in Boynton Beach, just up the road and
there is a
small group of us waveski surfers scattered throughout Florida. The bad news is,
we're
mostly scrawny little guys so our skis will not float you. :) A big part of
successful
waveski surfing is having a board that fits and floats you. If you are committed
to getting a
"proper" ski, I would sugget you give Roy at Island Waveskis in Cocoa Beach a
call. He can
make a board that will work for you and has been making more and more big boards
for
big guys like yourself.

The other option I might suggest is to get either an Ocean Kayak Scrambler
(great surfing
kayak) or Wilderness Systems Kaos (purpose-built surfing sit-on-top) to learn
the basics
of paddle surfing. It might make the transition (physically and financially)
from your other
kayaks to a waveski more feasible. They are much more stable and forgiving than
a proper
waveski and are bullet proof which is important when learning the basics.

The Florida group posts over here
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/paddlesurfers/
so you might want to join that group and keep an eye out for session
announcements.
Myself and William go out on a pretty regular basis in Boynton or Juno and
usually post
open invitations to whomever would like to join us.

Last weekend in September is correct and It will be the U.S.
Nationals however we are planning to add a separate International
class as a result of several International Waveskiers who have
expressed a sincere interest in visiting and surfing with us during
our U.S. nationals.

Sooooo, Please feel free to invite all and any Non U.S. Competitors
so we can make a big class for them and watch how the rest of the
world rips it up...

Nice to see you posting Tyler, glad your here. Hope all is well,
heard NZ Worlds was allot of fun.

Regards
Brian Kuszmar

PS. For the sake of us newbies, pls elaborate on sustained and avail
speed..

I have severe arthritis, and I still manage to waveski fairly often. I
find that the twisting and paddling is excellent exercise for my back.
Buy a long (9ft or longer) wide waveski, stay limber, always stretch
on the beach b4 entering the water and ALWAYS wear a life jacket.

Here's what I'm currently paddling: a 9'6" Infinity waveski
(they don't get much bigger....) and a kayak called a

Speaking as a greenhorn waveskier, I think you ought to try
re-mounting a wave ski before proceeding.

Dear Pete: where can I find a rental or a used waveski, or wave
witch, I have to see if I like it. I have body surfed, but never
surfed on a board. Years ago I snowed ski. I live in Palm Beach
county, Florida. But willing to Drive to Miami, if I have to. Maybe I
should have an outrigger. hehe. I am quite strong for an old guy.
Scott

Yes, it's lower in the water than a kayak, but you still have to
heave yourself up on it....

Here's what I'm currently paddling: a 9'6" Infinity waveski
(they don't get much bigger....) and a kayak called a
"WaveWitch". http://tinyurl.com/2hahd7

The WaveWitch is a *lot* easier to remount than a large
sit-on-top and I *might* even be tempted to argue that it's
easier to remount than the waveski... although I'd have to A/B
them a few times before going any further.
