3wks to U.S. Waveski Nationals Sept.28-30th Cocoa Beach Florida
Don't miss the largest Waveski event in several years! Riders from all
over the United States will be attending including the top Waveskiers
in the United States. I have spoken to Steven Moser (CA) from
Wavemaster USA and he will be coming, I suspect he will bring a few
from his crew too. I also spoke to Dick Wold and he said he will do
his best to make it. West Coast riders Rodger Adams (CA) Fletcher
Burton (CA) Mark Pastick (CA) and others will be attending. Ricky
Miller (NJ) past JR.Champ, Alexander Stubbs (Ma,CA) Stewart Deisel
Reynolds Macski rider (Va) MenoVan Schagan (Holland) Rob Canali (NJ)
Gordon&Paula Rock (NC) Stephen Riordan (Ga) Gordon Winterbon (GA)
The list above represents just some of the better known non-Florida
competitors; Florida has by far the most Waveskiers of any state thus
far with California running a close second in numbers, not
competitors. Florida will most probably and naturally have 4-5 times
more competitors at this event. This event will run for 3 day and will
be run and hosted by Roy & Pam Scafidi of Island Waveski, Roy and Pam
have over a decade of experience in running National and World Waveski
events. Ask anyone that showed up at the last small kick off event in
April and they can tell you that it was TOP notch run and the judging
was most professional. Island Waveski also nearly gave out more value
in prizes to EVERY competitor than was paid in entry fees. They truly
love this sport and are spending the money and time to prove it.
For those who are not super competitive folks (like me) the event also
produces tons of new Waveskis and equipment from all over the World
you can check out and even try. This event provides all of us an
incredible learning experience and BEST OF ALL and even more
important, the camaraderie and new friends you will experience and
meet is worth far more than anything you could buy or find anywhere
else. Fact is, I have made numerous good new friends that all share
the same love of Waveski'ing as I do. Nearly where ever I go in the
U.S. now, I can pick up the phone and call a new friend I met through
these events and go surfing with them. Many members on the USWA will
attest to the fact that at the very least, these events have forged
some great long lasting relationships...

Looks like the comp went well and everyone had a good time. Especially
as the surf looked like it was going to be non-existant for a while
prior to the weekend.
Thanks to Gordon for putting in the time to organise things, Brian for
kicking things off again in the US ( and the others behind the scenes
we never hear about), Roy from Island skis, and also Alexander and
his mum who flew down from Boston to attend... photos look great ..
and there are more coming I'm told.
A good start for the sport in N/C and of course the Island comp
before that in Florida. Nationals coming soon and hopefully you all
get a chance to put some comps together for the west coast team too.
If everyone from riders to manufacturers puts a bit in things will
grow nicely and everyone will benefit.
Good luck USWA...exciting times !

That parallels my own experience. Started by taking a hack saw
to my Werner Camano adjustable... then bought a wing paddle that
people said was too short... then bought a Werner white water
paddle in a 191 - with the Werner sales guy sort of rolling his
eyes.... But every time the shaft got shorter, it felt better.
But five feet???? Guess I've got to talk somebody into lending
me one for a few hours.

PeteCresswell
No problems rolling with a shorter paddle. It even has a small blade, Werner Twist. Less to "catch" unexpectedly when on the wave. You give up some power and speed but it feels much better to me than a longer paddle. I started with a 194. Of cource I'm rolling a kayak, need to practice rolling my ski.
Okay, I ordered a Hot-seat from Tom. Not only was the price less
than NRS, but the shipping was too (even if only 30c)....
-Bye

ps: anyone know where to get the flat plates in the skegbox that your
skegs screw into ?

Pete,
Being an old fart, I found that the 7'+ big bladed
paddle I used in Hawaii was getting to be too much, so
I built a wood paddle with smaller blades that is just
over 6' long.
The difference is amazing, its like having a lower
gear - I can get more and stronger strokes in and
accellerate much faster. It makes catching waves a
whole lot easier, more fun and less exhausting.
Aloha, Hunt Johnsen

Thanks for the networking Don! It was a pleasure having you in Cocoa
and it will be just as much to see you in Sept.
We going to be able to get you on a Waveski by then? heh
And, yes, we will keep the yahoo groups up a a portal so to speak.
Hope all is well and see you soon!

Do you guys have any issues with rolling with the 180cm paddles?
I'm using a 194cm, but it feels too long while on the wave. However, it allows rolling to be performed easily. When I try rolling with my shorter 180cm paddle it is much harder.
I'd guess choking up on the paddle improves things, as well as being careful about good technique (blade angle etc).
Brian -
I'm registered with the new forum - just waiting on the confirmation e-
mail. One suggestion, though - since the Yahoo discussion group is
FREE... don't be in too much of a hurry to dispose of it. For one
thing, people can find your group by doing searches through Yahoo
groups (that's how I found you!). Maybe add something to the
description at the USWA's main Yahoo page, telling everyone where to
find the new forum, and leave it up? Any way -
