I went to the retirement dinner for Bruce held at the Milwaukee Athletic Club. Bruce attained/earned  his position as senior umpire in the ML’s and he decided that the young guys could figure out how to rotate and get the right coverage, besides they only stand around for most of the game.

Footnote: he applied the same theory when he worked 3rd, 2nd, or 1st.

His retirement dinner was one of the best times of my umpire career. MC- Joe Buck (Mr. Witty), Joe West, Dutch Rennert, Dale Scott, Mike Winters, Bob Uecker, Larry Young, and many others. I have never heard so many funny umpires’ stories in my life: my sides ached for weeks.

I watched Bruce Froemming behind the plate once.

And it was rare to see him get out from back there. They had some
different four man mechanics because he hardly moved at all.
