Thanks for the very helpful info.
Can you just jump in anywhere you like in the pond? I've been
disappointed with OWS sites...always small areas roped off or no
swimming allowed.

Just up the TSP, in Putnam Valley.  You can also bike from there, around Farmers Mills, 301 and Gypsy Trail, or out 301 to Cold Spring and back.  There is a 3 mile loop you can run around the pond.  In the morning there are usually one or two boats out fishing- no motors.  Summer evenings it can get busy, but still a fine swim.

We are also planning to do some regular OWS in the cove at Croton Point Park beginning next week.  We plan to go out twice or three times a week at 7am.  Anyone interested?

I would go out to Farmers Mills, left on 301, left on Gypsy Trail back to Farmers Mills.  It's about 15 miles, and you could do it twice.  You could do it the other way around to go down Gypsy Train instead of up.

Way to go, Javier!  Me, too.  Toughman's a fabulous race (did it last year) and it's on our own Westchester roads, so we have the advantage of training here (we'll have to ride the course together - I know it too well)
BTW, anyone who's not racing but is around on Sept. 13, please volunteer.  You can contact me, since I'm a volunteer coordinator for the race.

Lew,

The Ossining pool is a 25m indoor pool located in the community center. I
believe that you have to be a village resident to use it. The rec center phone
number is (914) 941-3189.

However it is a very expensive club and I am considering alternatives. there is
a NY Sports Club near my office and while that particular one does not have a
pool, their Gold membership allows you to use any of their clubs during off hours
and on weekends. But what I am really looking for is a pool closer to home. I
have been told that the Montrose VA and the Springvale/Bethel Nursing Home both
have pools that the public can join, but I have been unable to find any
information on line about either one. I have also heard about a community pool
in Ossining, but again cannot locate anyhting.

Hi Carolyn,

I'm getting ready for the rev3 half and I'd be open to going in the water at
Oakland Beach (near Rye playland) wed morning (say 8am). Let me know if that
works for you.

Hi all -
So I'm thinking that noon Thursday would be a good time to try swimming for me. So far Flori & Mark have expressed interest in swimming and we've swam together before.  Michael, I don't know how your wife's swimming is, but this is at your own risk and we're just swimming for safety in numbers.   I hope she's done an OWS before. Let me know anything pertinent, as I would rather not be responsible (i.e. I'm a personal trainer and I do this for my clients, but now I'm just swimming with friends).

Hi.  I would like to get into open water on Thursday to try out Kate's wetsuit or decide on using my sleeveless.  Anyone else available to swim around noon at Croton Point?  I went last Wednesday with a client and it wasn't as cold as I thought.  I'm doing the Great Hudson River Swim on Sat. in NYC. (Doing not racing.) 1.3 miles from Christopher Street Pier to Battery Park.  Entries still open.

Johnny,

I agree with Javier. I do fitting and work through Danny's Cycles. I'd be happy to help you out in terms of basic sizing and then you can check out what the shops have to offer. As Javier wrote, the fit is the most important thing so don't worry about the make of bike. Feel free to give me a call.

Hi Johnny,

Welcome to Tri Training!

OK I will give you the advice I have given other beginners that I coach.

What is your goal for this triathlon?  Are you just looking to have fun and experience a triathlon?  or are you a competitive type and want to do really well.  If you are looking for the experience only then see if you can borrow a bike, also you can do a tri in a hybrid.  I personally prefer someone know what they want before spending any money on a bike.  OK so you decide you want a bike.

Then, figure out your budget.  Dont go looking for a bike and figure you will pay what you need too.  Because you will end up possibly spending more than you want to or have to.
SECOND, go to a bike shop, ask them to tell you what size bike you will need.  Bikes come in a variety of sizes.  Getting the right size bike is KEY to having a bike properly fit for you. While there look around ask lots of questions, tell them your needs and heck even ask them if they have anything that fits your budget.  Generally you can find a decent entry level road bike for about $800 and $1000.  See if they have a new bike that fits your budget.  I would definitely go with a road bike.

As for where to buy a used Bike, Craigslist, Ebay etc  Unfortunatly there are not too many bike shops that sell used bikes.  At least not in Westchester.

If you go the used bike route, I know people who have had success getting a bike through Craigslist.  Thats because on Craiglist the ads are normally local and the buyer has been able to see the bike before buying.

Something to consider when you buy a bike used, there are other expenses you may not think about.  for example It is recommended to get the bike fit for you.  This is a process wher ethe bike shop adjusts the bike for you ( ie handlebars, seat adjustments) so that you get most comfort and power from the bike. That will probably cost you somewhere between $1-200. You probably also have to get it tuned up, thats another $1-200.  These costs are already included  included when you buy a bike from a shop.  Thats why I suggest you figure out your budget before bike shopping.  Because if you find a bike online for $500 its really going to cost you anywhere between 7-900 by the time you are ready.  That is no deal unless you are buying a fantastic bike that would normally cost much more.

Finally, dont worry about aerobars, you wont need them.  At least not now if you are a beginner.

Hope this helps

Katie's suggestions is a good one -- No need to get a tri bike -- a fabulous road bike, adding aero bars is fine ------- Make sure you go for a carbon fork at least

Additionally, you might try to attend a local triathlon and just observe.  Also, visit bike stores and gather data!!  Look at bikes, tray a couple of 'em -- and talk to others about their choice in purchasing a bike!  Good luck!

Check out the Kestrals on bikes direct.com. You probably don't need a
tri bike. Get a sweet road bike with a long top tube and a long
seatpost so you can raise the seat. Snap on some aerobars and you're
ready to ride.
