I've been reading all of the tri training info and so happy to see some
races that we have in common -

I'm doing pawling, harriman sprint, nyc(nautica), a couple open water swims,
a couple biathlons (early season) and my first half - the rhode island 70.3
(Eve: hope you consider doing it also so that I know someone locally to
commiserate with on the long training runs) that are definitely my weakness.
Katie: thanks for mentioning the governors island swim - looks like a great ow
training swim..

You may already know this, but the nytc.org and threadsandtreads.com series are
local and fun collections of shorter races..

Any way- I would definitely be interested in meeting up for some long training
rides or runs.

Timberman) but I realized that not having any races on the calendar meant no
excuses to go out for a bike ride. So I'm trying to plan what I want to do for
next year. I recently heard about a new halfiron (or 70.3 as they're calling
it) in Rhode Island in July and was thinking about going for that one and
completing my first full half (rather than just being content to be an
Aquagirl). Any one else doing that one? I like the fact that it's closer than
Tupper. I'll ride the Tahoe century with TNT again in June (which means I can't
do Pawling) and I'll probably do a Harriman sprint or two (just not the

I finally joined WCC as I moved permanently to Tarrytown (I came over
to the US from Germany a year ago) and will probably do an Ironman
(Zurich) next year (we do a study for a Telemedicine solution and I
have been volunteered to be the peer "group" - still to be confirmed).

As I am originally a swimmer, I do a few competitions with the
Westchester Masters folks (most recently in Ossining).

So far I have always been training by myself as either the timing does
not work or some other reasons. Especially, I don't really like to
work out in the morning ... so right now I am swimming 2-3 times a
week in the Greenburgh/Fairview community center (nice 25yd pool,
6:30pm), run during the week at night (6pm or so) and on the weekends
early afternoon at Rockefeller and use the trainer for my biking
work-out when the weather is too ugly to leave the house ...

Need to get on the hunt to plan for some events to get me to Zurich...

Actually a ride/swim brick sounds like fun. With a hot tub chaser.
Unfortunately, I can't do it this weekend.

Excellent. I have some guest passes to Club Fit, so we could meet there in Briarcliff, ride and then warm in the hot tub when we are done. Sound like a plan?

My suggestion is to just come out and join in when you can. The more you participate, the more you will improve. You can always shorten or lengthen the distance of any ride and you'll find that by riding longer than you might think is necessary, you'll be incredibly empowered for your Olympic distance race. We had folks come out that were racing sprint distance with those racing Ironman. They both added value. There is also a database that has been started to identify a bunch of the toughest hills in Westchester to train on and for doing hill intervals, you can be training for most any distance especially this early in the season.

Post what you are planning on doing and we'll post what we're doing and I'm sure there will be multiple opportunities in the coming months to get together and improve. Also, I know there is the TNT time trail course that you might think about using to do an early season evaluation, so you can later measure progress. Eve and others can tell you exactly where that is.

The one caveat is that when we multi-sport athletes join in with the regular WCC Rides, we found early on last year that we needed to wear signs on our backs that read something like "Warning, the person wearing this may actually talk to you; please prepare in advance so you don't ride off the road." We also don't think about stopping at rest stops as part of our normal riding, since rest stops are hard to find during our races. And they don't seem to understand when we ask where on the cue sheet is the bottle exchange ;-)

As for training, last season we posted bricks on this forum whenever we were going to do them, including a 8-mile time trial run from 9W to Lake Tiorati, a Harriman. Bear Mountain Brick, a bunch of WCC rides that we turned into bricks just by letting folks know that was an option, and even the Montauk Century we treated as a brick and ran around the lake after we were done before getting on the train to go back to Babylon.

We'll also be doing the Lehigh Valley Half Marathon and turning that into a biathlon of sorts as one of our team members has a lake house so we turn the weekend into a bit of a tri camp with open water swimming, riding and the half marathon, and then I'll be going out to Los Angeles in March to turn the LA Marathon into a brick workout as well with a few of the Race with Purpose team members and a number of the team members on the USC Triathlon team.

As for Tupper Lake weekend, we race on Saturday and then we have a house in Placid so on Sunday morning, we ride off one or more loops of the IMLP bike course and follow it up with a swim in Mirror Lake before heading back down south.

How's that for options? J

You can check out racing options for us at my blog at www.racewithpirpose .org/coachadam and you can also look at Javier's site as he updates his training regularly at http://www.operatio nironman. com/.

You can check out racing options for us at my blog at www.racewithpirpose .org/coachadam and you can also look at Javier's site as he updates his training regularly at http://www.operatio nironman. com/.

Geez, y'all! I was just thinking this morning that I needed to post a question like this one to revitalize the group, and poof, you did it and then some.
I'm the Eve that Adam was talking about. If only we lived closer to one another and Adam didn't have a real job in addition to his volunteer coaching, we could have a heck of a name for our training biz.
Katie, I live up in your neck of the woods, Cortlandt Manor. The TNT time trial course that Adam was talking about is basically route 100, between 118 to 35. There's a marker on the shoulder for 4 or 4.1 mile stretch. Also us TNT'ers who ride centuries meet at the dirt lot for Saturday morning rides and use the 100 loop for warm-up.

Yesterday, I got in the pool after at least six months of no swimming. Trying to change my stroke (rotate at the torso more) to eliminate shoulder issues. So I guess I'm getting back into the swing.

I didn't do any tri's last year (I thought I'd take it easy on my family after making them sit in the cold rain at Timberman) but I realized that not having any races on the calendar meant no excuses to go out for a bike ride. So I'm trying to plan what I want to do for next year.

I recently heard about a new halfiron (or 70.3 as they're calling it) in Rhode Island in July and was thinking about going for that one and completing my first full half (rather than just being content to be an Aquagirl). Any one else doing that one? I like the fact that it's closer than Tupper. I'll ride the Tahoe century with TNT again in June (which means I can't do Pawling) and I'll probably do a Harriman sprint or two (just not the half).

Well, let's plan a ride together. If there's a Saturday with temps in the high 30's we could meet at 100/118, freeze our buns off, then go chill somewhere and discuss next season.

Eve

My suggestion is to just come out and join in when you can. The more you participate, the more you will improve. You can always shorten or lengthen the distance of any ride and youll find that by riding longer than you might think is necessary, youll be incredibly empowered for your Olympic distance race. We had folks come out that were racing sprint distance with those racing Ironman. They both added value. There is also a database that has been started to identify a bunch of the toughest hills in Westchester to train on and for doing hill intervals, you can be training for most any distance especially this early in the season.

Post what you are planning on doing and well post what were doing and Im sure there will be multiple opportunities in the coming months to get together and improve. Also, I know there is the TNT time trail course that you might think about using to do an early season evaluation, so you can later measure progress. Eve and others can tell you exactly where that is.

The one caveat is that when we multi-sport athletes join in with the regular WCC Rides, we found early on last year that we needed to wear signs on our backs that read something like Warning, the person wearing this may actually talk to you; please prepare in advance so you dont ride off the road. We also dont think about stopping at rest stops as part of our normal riding, since rest stops are hard to find during our races. And they dont seem to understand when we ask where on the cue sheet is the bottle exchange ;-)

Lots of paces. On both Saturday and Sunday multiple groups go out. The friendlier of them is the earlier 8am group of folks with WCC Road Runners. Lots of different paces and distances. I tend to go out earlier because I like to be back home by about 10:30am to spend the day working or with friends, so I usually start running at 7am. I’m definitely in winter shape and focusing on my riding so I’m probably running around 8:00-9:00 min/miles around Rockies right now. Usually I show up on Sundays with dead legs, wondering why I don’t just stick to what the lord gave me, which was running fast over middle distances. I save the 6-min miles for the fall.

Oh and I strongly recommend the Boston Build-up series which begins January 6th with the 10K, and the Taconic Freezer 5’s (a 5K and a 5-miler).

You’ll meet a lot of triathletes of varying abilities at both of those series.

Like I said, behind, So Cal, NorCal, Boulder and Austin, Westchester is a pretty great place to live the triathlon life.

I'll definitely join ya'll at the first opportunity. I'll be happy
with my cycling if I can get to even the same fitness level I was at
during last summer, and since both swimming and running are new to me,
my goals for Lavaman aren't all that lofty (aka - FINISH). That said,
I'm putting in a solid base of running, and after my Saturday swim
lesson I'll hopefully be on my way to more than decent shape, and I
hope to surprise myself race day :)

I'd love to do the TNT time trail course, I'll look for more info on
it - Thanks!

Sounds like a plan Coach. Also, who is Eve and can you send me her contact info.?

I actually was more worried/interested in the running paces, at the

My suggestion is to just come out and join in when you can. The more you participate, the more you will improve. Josh, as for pace, it's base training months so the weekends are not about
hammering, plus you still have to race when you get down to Central Park.
The hard work is reserved for shorter LT or interval workouts during the
week at this point.

By the way, I mentioned this awhile back but the gym here in Mid Westchester
will likely be getting all new spin bikes and I'm looking for a few folks
that want to be part of a training program from the ground up, both as
participants and as instructors - not your typical indoor cycling program -
a bit more focused on incorporating the indoor rides with the rest of a
training programs so that they are focused on achieving a desired benefit.
Also if you know of GREAT indoor cycling teachers, let me know. I love
referrals from people that actually ride outside.

If you are interested drop me a line. We'll have to get Eve to make the
drive down from Northern Westchester to teach as well.

Essentially, if you like to ride and do tri's and like to help others
achieve their goals, and most especially if you really want to help others
have a positive impact on their communities, then we should talk because
that's what Race with Purpose is all about.

By the way, both Jackie and Javier tore up the Tupper Lake course last
season. All of that hard training definitely paid off.

Cheers,

As for Tupper Lake weekend, we race on Saturday and then we have a house in Placid so on Sunday morning, we ride off one or more loops of the IMLP bike course and follow it up with a swim in Mirror Lake before heading back down south.

How's that for options? J

You can check out racing options for us at my blog at www.racewithpirpose.org/coachadam and you can also look at Javier's site as he updates his training regularly at http://www.operationironman.com/.

I train with folks in Northern Westchester mostly. There is a Masters swim at Club Fit Jefferson Valley. Some of us are very serious and place ag, but most of us are in it for self challenge. WCC has not posted rides specifically for tri training and I think it could be a way to get new people into the sport. Adam, do you guys train with Diane C? She is a friend and I taught her kids.

I know Diane and obviously have raced along side her many times. It’s actually kind of funny. We both have many of the same friends and yet we’ve never been formally introduced. It’s one of those funny things where a neighbor of mine will say “I just saw Diane at the club and she said she really wants to meet you.” Or me saying to another mutual friend, “I heard Diane got really sick last month and it took her out of her training. How’s she doing?” I think I know more about Diane’s training than some of the folks that I coach. It’s a little Tom Hanks in You’ve Got Mail J

Thanks Adam. Sounds like a fun day Saturday, however I have the last
session in my set of swim lessons scheduled. I ran my first race a
few weeks ago (the Race to Deliver 4m) and had a blast, so I'd like to
join you some other time you're riding down. The next one I'm
registered for is the 5M on Jan. 12th.

What sort of pace/distances do you do on the Sunday runs? I may not
be able to keep up with any of you :)

I'm signed up for Pawling (sprint) and Philly (olympic) in June. I'll prolly do a few more sprints and I would like to do some biathlons early. Did the Med Center last year and it was great fun. I also do open water swim races, (crazy 2mi swim around Governor's Island last summer) as these are good training for the tris. Maybe next year I'll do a half. Training starts in January.

How about the X-bike from Trixter? It uses a freewheel instead of a fixed wheel like the Spinning bikes do, so it's more like riding outside. You have to work on your balance more and the wheel doesn't spin unless you move it, so you have to have an even pedal stroke or there'll be dead spots. I used to teach at a club that had the X-bikes and they were a much better workout and more like real cycling in gravity (out of the saddle climbing gets your heart rate up more like real climbing). The bikes weren't harder to learn to use for newbies who've never "spun" but experienced spinners had to change the way they thought about indoor cycling (some liked the easier way better). I wish I had use of the X-bike now.

I'm helping a local organization to start a youth and adult triathlon training program targeted at first timers, some of whom do not yet even own a bike, so trainers are not a viable option.

They are looking to replace their old indoor bikes and I wanted to get your recommendations as to which models you like and why, and just as importantly which bikes you don't like and why. (e.g., resistance transition is very smooth, or I cant stand the hand positions, or the bike doesnt allow sufficient adjustments to fit me appropriately, or this is the best bike Ive ever ridden)

The bikes would be used for the program and then as well for an indoor cycling program.

I'm looking for durability, smoothness, good road simulation, good adjustment for fit, consistent resistance between bikes (so one can teach effectively) and reasonable maintenance.

Here are a few under consideration:

Star Trac

re: roads with the word "Hill" in them...

Let's not forget roads that start with "Cliff" - Like Cliffdale in CT -

It's a bowl shaped road between riversville and king street - Heading west, you go down 412 feet in .6mi then up 485 feet in .45mi for a 20.4% grade climb. I added it to the database. Breathtaking - takes mine away every time.

I finally found the Cue sheet we followed where we encountered
Tinker Hill. Its the "Hillier Than Thou", cue sheet, that starts
out of Millwood A&P. I will enter the info for Tinker Hill Now that
I believe I can find its location. I remember that ride had a few
other pretty challenging hills. If I follow my theory of any road
with the word "Hill" in the name is bound to be bad. As such this
cue sheet also has White Hill rd, Crow Hill rd, and Oscawana Heights
Rd ( yes its not "Hill" but "Heights" counts as well).

I will put in the hill I spoke about. I used gmaps pedometer to get the mileage and googlemaps to get the elevation.

Heck it's 60 degrees today.

Either way, get on it. Maybe we'll ask nicely when we're all done and Bruce will show off his php skills and create a hill inventory similar to what he did with the ride schedule. Yeah, I know Bruce, you can feel free to call all of us weak-assed wusses for not knowing how to code, or not riding when there's lightning, blah, blah, blah.

I'll volunteer to put together a slick xls file with alll the hills - would
just need the data (could email me hill data and I could update the file). I
just need to know where to store it so that it is easy for all to access..

Let me know what you think..

It would be great if someone on this group who loves to analyze things could take all of these great recommendations and summarize them into a database table which I just created on the WCC Rides Yahoo Group. Westchester Training Hills or if you can't click there, paste this URL into your browser: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/WCCRides/database?method=reportRows&tbl=1

I included the following characteristics:

- Name of the Hill
- City, town or village
- Short description of location or starting point
- Hill distance
- Grade (Avg/Max)
- Total Vertical Feet Climb
- Gear Recommendation
- Recommended workout
- Recommended by:
- Comments, complaints and fears

Assuming we don't have all of the information for all of these great climbs, please put in what you do know and then perhaps we can use this the next month to head out there and try a few of these out to complete the table. If we divide and conquer, we could probably have a complete tool that everyone can benefit from this season and we can all be even better climbers, which I know I for one would love to be.

Criticism, sarcasm and comments always encouraged.
Cheers,
-Adam

The Race with Purpose folks will be doing their signature 21-Mile training run from Riverside and 165th across the GwB and up River Road to the Ranger Station out and back on Saturday morning. By my count we can support a few more runners who might be training for Chicago, Westchester, NYC or another Fall race who are ready for this challenging long run. There is a 19-mile option which cuts out the mile climb to the Ranger Station.

The run includes accelerations and a finish fast 3 miles to train your body to draw upon different met pathways and push yourself beyond traditional perceived boundaries. Please bring a watch with multiple countdown or interval timers to remind you to change your effort level at regular intervals.

If you are interested in joining us on this run, shoot me an e-mail with you contact information and long run pace so I can give you the starting time for your group.
There is no cost for this run, just bring an enthusiastic attitude a wealth of moxie and a pair of healthy legs.

If you'd like to come out on your bike to get a ride in and provide support for the runners, we'd love to have you as well and you can get a good workout in doing intervals on River Road.

Cheers,
-Coach Adam
