I’d like to try commuting to school. I live in White Plains (corner of Old Mamaroneck Road and Mamaroneck Avenue) and go to school at 122 & Broadway on the Upper West Side. Can you recommend a route? Thank you. Michael

The informative file link provided by Congressman
Spano is a "planning file". I have not noticed any
work on some of the roads that I am familiar with.
Anyone out there in chat land know if any of the items
have been budgeted, approved and/or implemented?
Meanwhile regarding pot holes and such, All we can do
is just keep calling the state DOT and report the
hole. Calls back in May asking for Rte. 22 potholes
near Kensico watershed resulted in small repairs at
the time.
Yes, a letter campaign as someone else suggested is
also good.

I think we should all then send letter to the state here locally to
improve this section and make it a real "wide shoulder bike lane".

They are also in the process of re-paving Route 120
between Armonk (Route 22) and Chappaqua (Route 117).
Although the road is now smooth I think it is more
dangerous since they added many inches of asphalt. Now
with the higher pavement the shoulder is almost a foot
lower in some places. This drastic drop off seems very
dangerous for bikers. I thought when then repaved
roads they had to do something for cyclists.

Hello WCC and Cyclers,
Yesterday I sent a letter to Congressman Spano requesting the widening
and improving of Route 22. I am sure most roadies like myself have
been on it and know what it is like along the winding Kensico section. The
crumbling turns are pretty dangerous since the cars use it as a 4
lane speedway.
The response I got was:
Route 22 is not under the jurisdiction of
the County of Westchester but under the jurisdiction of the New York State Department of
Transportation. They can be contacted at the New York State Department of
Transportation (592-6557), 1 Dana

Judy,
Welcome to the sport of cycling. It is a lot of fun, as you have
discovered.
If you want to go faster, I would recommend a road bike, as opposed to
a mountain bike, or hybrid, which are slow and uncomfortable for
longer distances. The Trek 1500 WSD is such a road bike. I would
recommend the upgrade to the Trek Pilot 5.0 WSD, as it is a full
carbon fiber bike and will be more comfortable for longer rides, but
the 1500 is certainly a good bike. Depends on your pocketbook and
commitment to the sport. If you get into cycling, you will be looking
for a new bike once you have a couple of years on it, while with the
Pilot, you may never need another bike unless you get into faster more
competive riding.
Danny's is a good store, but make sure they spend the time to fit you
and you feel comfortable on the bike for longer rides. A road bike
should be easy to ride for hours on end. Pain on your hands or saddle
area is an indication you and your bicycle are not a good fit.

Hey great to see a new bike rider in the fold. The options for a new road bike are many but in the mean time, why not try putting a pair of high pressure slicks on the 4300 if you intend to do trail riding. Many of my friend who don't want or can't have second bikes do this and are fairly comfortable. Once you up your daily mileage you could look to get a more advanced road bike, by that time you would have had a lot of time to ask questions and figure out what your particular needs are going to be.
just a thought....

I ended up getting the Trek 1000 (turned out to be the '07 model, with
the discovery channel/shimano/AMD decals that I'm not too fond of but
will live with), since I felt most comfortable on it and it seemed to
fit me the best. I've only ridden 25 miles so far but it's been
great; my only complaint is the saddle, which gets a little
uncomfortable after a while, but not horrible. The front derailleur,
even though it's a 2203 (I think - that's what the specs say on the
website for the '06, but I didn't notice any markings on it?..), it's
been shifting smooth so far, and the whole bike is quiet.
Anyway, I plan on joining WCC towards the end of the month, as I read
somewhere that there are "newbie" rides every beginning of the month?
I look forward to meeting some or all of you!
Regards,
Josh
Josh, what ever you decide, be sure one bike won't be enough once you
catch the road bike bug!
So, I'd go for a bike that will last a few years, that will wear well,
that doesn't cost too much money up front but is comfortable etc. but
has room to alter your position as you become more road bike aware.
You should find your MTB legs will give you a great start at road biking.
In a couple of years, assuming you've caught the bug you can then
relegate your beloved first road bike to the position of winter wonder
and wet day rides. At that point you'll have a much better idea what
you want from a bike, what fit, what feel, what wheels, and given your
then personal situation, what you can afford.
For many of us, that might just mean buying some decent upgrades for
the current bike. If thats the case, then buy a bike now that you feel
you can understand what upgrades you'd like to change when you can
afford it. Components etc. change design, materials, relaibility etc.
reasonably quickly. That state of the art 8-ring rear-set-up that was
pretty common 5-years ago is old hat now, the 9-ring rear-set-ups have
become passe and getting ten is the target to aim for. Many other
components have changed and will change in the next few years.
In a couple couple of years if you can afford the then top of the line
bike, what you can be sure is that it will be better, lighter and
about the same price as todays top of the line bike, which will be
2-years or more old by then.
Remember that your bike only makes a difference to a point; no matter
how much you spend there will always be someone else who spends more;
you can't spend you way to the podium and thats its motion not muscle
that will get you there!
Enjoy! ++Mark.
I'm sure over the course of a year you all get approached to sponsor
someone doing something worthy, possible involving cycling, to raise
money for a good cause.
Well, this one needs no money at all. It is an idea I had a few weeks
back, to organise a cycle group to just bike down to NYC meet Jane
Tomlinson where she arrives in NY. More of this in a minute.
Jane Tomlinson is a British Stage-4 cancer sufferrer. She was told she
has terminal, inopperable breast cancer almost six years ago. There is
some speculation on the Internet and in chat rooms this her cancer
isn't genuine. I can assure you it absolutely is.
I know Jane, husband Mike and the kids. I was part of the support team
when she did Ironman Florida in 2004. One of the UK's top cancer
specialists has seen her records and xrays etc. and is on record as
confirming her diagnosis.
The reason people are sceptical is not just becuase she has done IM
Florida; she has cycled from Rome to London; done numerous marathons
and other triathlons and already raised more than 1.2-million UK
Pounds, or close to 2-million dollars.
Jane is current doing her own personal ride across America. I've been
in touch with her husband Mike via email numerous times on the ride,
and while they have serious concerns for Jane, and are not sure she
will make it to NY, really hope she will.
Their ride is currently planned to arrive in NY on September 1st. The
sixth anniversary of her diagnosis. Assuming they make it, it would be
great if we could get a big group of cyclists down to meet them, and
hopefully get some decent media coverage.
So, I'm not asking for money, no sponsorship needed. Just consider
reserving Sept 1st for a ride down to NYC and back. I'll work on
details in the next few weeks. Mike and the PR are currently working
on arrival details to try to coincide with getting some decent tv news
covereage.

Josh,
I can't recommend Bicycle World in Mt Kisco enough. Great shop.
I would spend the extra bucks and go with a full carbon frame right
from the start. Metal frames are pretty much over in terms of
comfort, weight and stiffness. Carbon beats them all. You pay a bit
more, but in the long run, you get a much better bike that you will be
happy with for years.
Eric sells Giant, Felt and Trek carbon bikes (and maybe others). You
can't go wrong with any of them.
Bruce
I bought my Giant OCR2 from Bicycle World last fall, love it. It CAME w/ the carbon fork. You can buy a bike anywhere but the best feature of buying it from Bicycle World is the service. Eric will give you any hour and a half to fit the bike to you. Everytime I have a problem or need service, I bring it in w/o an appointment, Reggie, in service dept stops what he's doing and takes me right away. Many others I have spoken to say the same thing. Good Luck. Bruce

I have a Giant OCR 2 that I have since upgraded to a carbon fork, Carbon bars/stem, bontrage race wheels and a few other minor changes. the bike is great but I would strongly recommend buying a bike with a Carbon fork already. It makes all the difference and not that big of an upgrade in price as opposed to all carbon frame. I was the same looking for fun but the carbon fork changed the whole way the bike felt and handled.
Subject: [WCCChat] New rider, bike recommendations/thoughts?
Hi, I'm looking at getting into road biking, coming from a mountain biking past. Races are a possibility once or twice a year, but I think I will be riding mostly for fun and fitness.
I've been looking at the following - 1. Specialized Allez Triple 2. Giant OCR3 3. Trek 1000.
I tried the Allez and the OCR3 today, and found the Allez to be a smoother ride, but the OCR3 seemed to fit me slightly better. Not much time was spent on adjustments for either bike, though. I have not yet tried the Trek, but the folks at Bicycle World told me last weekend that they would have one built for me to try this weekend.
The list above is in my current order of preference - Going by the reviews on roadbikereview.com, and after riding the first two.
The other issue is, if I go for the Allez, I'd have to buy from a shop that I've had some suboptimal experiences with in the past. The OCR3 and Trek are both carried by Bicycle World, which I feel pretty comfortable buying from.
I'd appreciate any advice on these matters - any strong opinions on any of these three bikes? I think i'll probably end up with whichever one fits me best, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to solicit some opinions.
Thanks in advance, and I hope to be joining WCC and riding with you soon! Regards, Josh
Hi,
I'm looking at getting into road biking, coming from a mountain biking
past. Races are a possibility once or twice a year, but I think I
will be riding mostly for fun and fitness.
I've been looking at the following -
1. Specialized Allez Triple
2. Giant OCR3
3. Trek 1000.
I tried the Allez and the OCR3 today, and found the Allez to be a
smoother ride, but the OCR3 seemed to fit me slightly better. Not
much time was spent on adjustments for either bike, though. I have
not yet tried the Trek, but the folks at Bicycle World told me last
weekend that they would have one built for me to try this weekend.
The list above is in my current order of preference - Going by the
reviews on roadbikereview.com, and after riding the first two.
The other issue is, if I go for the Allez, I'd have to buy from a shop
that I've had some suboptimal experiences with in the past. The OCR3
and Trek are both carried by Bicycle World, which I feel pretty
comfortable buying from.
I'd appreciate any advice on these matters - any strong opinions on
any of these three bikes? I think i'll probably end up with whichever
one fits me best, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to solicit some opinions.
Thanks in advance, and I hope to be joining WCC and riding with you soon!

Josh
Vermont Inn to Inn is great. My husband and I did it a few years ago. Leave your car at the first inn and the innkeepers transport your luggage from one place to another and provide cue sheets routing you to the next place. Despite climbing numerous hills and putting in a lot of miles, it was one of the most relaxing vacations we've ever had. Not driving during a vacation is amazingly liberating.

Limitless Possibilities! Montreal, Quebec City, ROute Vert across Quebec,
Vermont Inn to Inn, Champlain Routes, Erie Canal Routes, etc. I recommend
Quebec, very bike friendly, great food. Montreal and Quebec City have miles
of trails seperated from traffic. I'm going to QC first weekend in August
to try it out.

I'm looking to do a 2-3 day cycling vacation somewhere within easy
driving distance (poconos, berkshires, VT, etc.) in August/September.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
Limitless Possibilities! Montreal, Quebec City, ROute Vert across Quebec,
Vermont Inn to Inn, Champlain Routes, Erie Canal Routes, etc. I recommend
Quebec, very bike friendly, great food. Montreal and Quebec City have miles
of trails seperated from traffic. I'm going to QC first weekend in August
to try it out.

For a 2-3 day bike vacation in August/Sept how about the club's Red Hook Weekend? It's for members only and it's better than anything that can be bought commercially. We ought to have more like it.

to Purchase. I am looking for a ride of 50+- miles, Trying to get our

www.empirestateaidsride.org is looking for another person on their
team. The ride is August 13-19, 560 miles, Niagara Falls to NYC. It's
a beautiful ride for a good cause. If you're interested in riding or
sponsoring the ride contact lovegreen@... or 914-785-8214.

A bigger question would be how to make sure they are all aware of it. But
you have to start somewhere. Better to have an ignored law than no law at
all.

After hearing of many close calls and even injuries and deaths caused by
riders being hit
by car and truck mirrors, this law sounds sensible.
Florida recently passed legislation (H.B. 7079) requiring that "the driver
of a vehicle
overtaking a bicycle or other nonmotorized vehicle must pass the bicycle or
other
nonmotorized vehicle at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet between the
vehicle and the
bicycle or other nonmotorized vehicle." Arizona, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Utah,
and
Wisconsin also have similar laws on their books. Congratulations to Florida
for being the
first ECG state to pass this type of law!

Lin,
Where would you be starting from? There are lots of ways to get into
White Plains without a lot of traffic, but it helps to know where you
are starting from. The bike path may not be your best approach, is it
is on the wrong side of the county for White Plains.
Bruce
119 is the flattest route that I have tried.
My favorite is Eastview / Grasslands Road, but it is a big climb up to 100A,
and the downhill if you go straight is very scary with no shoulders.
You can skip the narrow downhill (the uphill section has good shoulders) by
making a left on 100A/100 and a right on Lakeview.
When you near the bottom of the hill by the Bronx River Pkwy. make a right
onto Commerce Blvd. through the cemetery and a left onto Legion Drive at the
other end. THen a right onto Broadway after crossing over the Bronx River
Pkwy. will bring you to the Kensico Dam plaza and take the bike trail south
from there.
A little complicated, but it is the best I've found so far. If anyone has a
better route, I'm all ears.

I'm thinking of bicycling to where I work in White
Plains. The trip on the Old Putt Railway is sweet -
but how do I get all the way into the middle of White
Plains (I'm near The Westchester Mall) without riding
in commuter traffic on 119? Anybody have a route?
Thanks
