Anyone going to Mighty Joe Youngs today and is worried about possible
snow coming back? I can offer a ride to 3 passengers and 2 skinny
people jammed in my Yakima ski rack in my Subaru. I am going from
Verplanck, so if you are interested and are on the flight path, call
914 393 5141.

Dave, you must be thinking of another Ray.  Ray P is hot shit. Ray, why don't you do biathlons?  I saw you came in like, 3rd in the Tac. Road Runner freezer five a couple of years ago?  Ray and Randall were going to race this year I think.  Hey, where are you guys???

Josh, I can tell you, (and James, you can back me up here), that last year on the first Two Bridges ride, we dropped James like a hotcake.  Granted, I think he said he had been out playing late the night before, but he could not do the 18mph pace on the rollers.  After a summer of training with Bruce et al, he blew us all away at the time trials.  You set your cap to keep up with him.  You can do it.

them as club rides to get the ridership up, and that helped, but last
year, the riders came back to Tuesday, and it is once again a large
pack ride. So the answer to your question about A riders is there are
not many "WCC A" riders on these rides, but rather all the local
riders, most of whom race.

Most of the WCC A riders I know (myself included), do not race, as for
me, the upside (winning a metal) is not worth the down side (serious
injury). Not so say all that racing offers is metals, but it is also
a serious time commitment and lots of travel (few local races), so I
don't bother. For me, staying with guys 1/2 my age is victory enough.
Being the first over Rt 22, inflicting pain on the flats, and
finishing with the pack at the end is a huge victory for me.

I did the Bethel crit many years ago. The clue to that race is to be
in the front on the last three loops, the third to last will probably
not matter, but the they will go on the second, then the first is the
sprint. You also want to be on the outside up the steepest part of
the hill. Also, don't let a break get away, it happens some times.

Bruce,
Excellent info - thanks once again! I'll see how do on the Thursday
night rides before committing (even mentally) to the Tuesday nights,
but yea it seems to be a great training opportunity that doesn't make
sense to pass up. Definite kudos to you and Aaron.

I understand your sentiment about racing, but I can't ignore the
desire to test myself. I also find the training strangely enjoyable,
and knowing I have upcoming races helps me train that much harder.
I've got my first race ever this Sunday at Bethel (crit series);
weather's not looking too good though.. :/

thanks again,

Bruce,
Thanks for the advice. I have no problem working hard. After losing
a lot of strength last year due to "life", i've been training hard for
a few months, and a few weeks ago I tested myself on the gimbels ride
(was able to hang on, barely, by a thread). I hope to make the
Thursday night rides a regular part of my training - I live and work
in White Plains, so there's really no excuse :D

I know USI is the 'racing' club, comparatively, so maybe this is out
of place here - but do a number of the A riders on the Tues/Thurs
rides also race?

Ellen,

I would say if you rate yourself a C+ rider, then no,
Tuesday/Thursdays are not for you.

There are actually 5 good weeknight rides for WCC/USI members in
Westchester

Monday Nights - Recovery ride - Mark Lalloo is the leader. This is a
slow paced pack ride appropriate for anyone that can do a solid 15mph
pace. I would recommend you try this ride is you want a taste of
Thursday.

Tuesday night training ride. Balls to the wall. If you survive to
the end of the mid summer route, then you ROCK!!!, have a beer and
consider yourself a hot shit cyclist ready to take on anything.

Wednesday night Fling from Hickory and Tweed in Armonk (May-Aug) are
flings (multiple levels) so you can pick your group.

Thursday night, not balls to the wall, but hard. I recommend you are
a STRONG B+ rider before you attempt on of these rides. We will try
to keep you on the ride if you try your absolute hardest to stay with
us, but back off for a second and you will be dropped by the group.

Friday night fling (May-Aug) like Wed, recommended as well.

Hope you can come out and ride during the week, it is a lot of fun,

Bruce

Last summer Randal led rides out of the Gannet lot in WP- they were billed as B+ at first, but we routinely did 20 mph ave. We worked in a pace line and I would try to keep Ray in my sight going up the big hill.  These were great training rides, but they started late - 6:45- so few people showed up.

Tuesday, which is race pace.

Right now there is no easy way of stepping up to the Thursday night
ride. Group training rides are different than normal WCC rides, in
that the group has it's own pace and you have to keep up or you get
dropped. It is not like a WCC ride, in that you can generally get
back on at some point. Once you fall off Tuesday/Thursday, it's over.

This ride would take a special kind of leader, someone with
experience, but who does not want to ride that hard. Maybe I do it
when I can't keep up on Tuesday night anymore.

Josh,

The clue to staying with the Thursday ride is to come out on EVERY
ride and work as hard as you can to stay on. Whippoorwill is a bitch,
but is not the hardest climb on the route (I consider that climbs on
Rt 22). Whippoorwill has the steepest section, plus it follows a
gradually increasing pitch on the way. Short, but tough. The rest of
Whippoorwill is easier. As the days get longer, we go longer and harder.

Tuesday / Thursday night rides require a special type of rider.
Someone who wants to improve their fitness, someone who will fight,
and someone who is not easily discouraged. If you don't possess these
properties, then don't bother showing up, you will just get
discouraged and leave. But if you do, I can not recommend these rides
enough. Just ask anyone who rides them on a regular basis. James is
a prime example. He improved a lot on this ride, and he did not show
up all the time (note to James, keep not showing up all the time, I
don't want you to get better than me;-). Aaron is another rider who
really improved on this ride, and guess what, it is a rare ride that
Aaron is not there.

I list these rides with the club because I think many club members
would benefit from doing them, but they take someone with a steeled
determination to come out every week. Riders that ride every week get
better, those that don't, get dropped after a while.

You will become faster and stronger if you show up every week.

Hope this helps.
