I took my bike back for a few more adjustments today, and then this
evening, after my second job, I took it on the 2.5 mile ride to
deposit a paycheck. I sort of dreaded the long climb out of
Peekskill, one unending hill, so since I live on a hill, I decided to
use altitude to my advantage and took mostly back roads. It worked
out well, though it lengthened the trip, and I only had a couple of
serious climbs, joining 35/202 after the worst of it. The chain
didn't even fall off! Beautiful evening for it too, which I could see
through my new nifty lens-switch sunglasses- copper for the way
there, while it was sunny, and clear for the way back, as it got
progressively duskier. (Hadn't wanted to ride at night, but the ride
back was nearly all downhill and very quick.)
I really look forward to joining a group ride, but my schedule is
ridiculous, and none of them work for me so far. It's great to
witness the chat, though!
Susan

I have to
say this is the first request of this kind we've received. It's an interesting
idea and I can't see any reason not to go, but I should just warn you that the
May 4th gardens are some of our most popular for visitors. The Steinhardt garden
and Rocky Hills have had more than 800 to 1500 people attend during their past
openings and this means TONS of car traffic. So I would just be prepared for
that ahead of time. But I guess if the bicycles are your own responsibility,
that's perfect. There is a $5 admission fee for each person to go through each
garden, but if you know the size of your group ahead of time I can help you get
discounted admission tickets in advance which will make your visit easier (just
drop in a ticket and go).
I believe
photos are allowed at all of the gardens. Let me know if I can help with the
tickets.
All the
best,
Erin
Plimley
Open Days
Coordinator”

I’m
still scheming here, but I think there’s a route developing that will
offer us some wonderful photo opportunities, beyond just these garden visits.

Kevan, count me in! I did 2 "Click n Ride" rides last season. The
first one went to the Croton Dam and the 2nd went to Stone Barns. Its
nice to have a destination as well as just stopping along the way when
something looks interesting.
I found this, but I don't know much about any of these destinations.
http://www.westchestertourism.com/DrivingTours/IOneGarden.htm
May 3 weekend works better for me (April 26 is Passover).
I don't know much about the Purchase/greenwich area, so I couldn't
help with routes.
Also, are there days when people open their gardens for tours-- do you
know anything about this? Anyone?

At some point late last year, I promised a few folk over
a drink (that damn holiday punch!) that I’d lead a multi-level club ride
geared more towards photography than robust riding. Well, spring has
sprung upon us and in one warm and sunny nook, at the base of Sherwood Avenue, if
you noticed; the daffodils are already in bloom. Those little flowers
guilted (pardon the verbal stretch) me into getting this ride started.
But I need from everyone interested some answers to two questions, which are: when
should we hold this ride and where are the best places to go to see and shoot
the colors? I think it is still just a bit too early, but I want this event
planned and a general route put in place. I’m thinking the weekends
of either April 26th or May3rd and the route to be in the Greenwich/Bedford/Purchase
area, but I am totally open to your suggestions. Small gardens might be
better than the large ones we roll by in the northern part of the county.
This is a ride where no one gets dropped and opportunities
to shoot are taken. The average pace will be that of a snail’s and
will provide allowances for you large format-type folk. I am speaking of the
cameras of course!
I would hope that we could nail that perfect weekend day
where the trees and flowers are in bloom. What say ye? And PLEASE!!!!...what
you do have to say, please direct to the WCCChat
line of communication and not clog the Rides
email system. I will not respond to communication in the Rides email
system until the event has been planned using WCCChat.
So, clean those lenses and give me your ideas.

Reiterating a common theme--Thank you Kevan! Members
of our club who give of themselves are to be greatly
appreciated. While standing in a parking lot changing
tires and greasing bikes may not be everyones' idea of
a great time, for those who participated yesterday,

A huge thank you to Kevan and all the others who helped out yesterday. I did oil my chain and change my tire. They kept wanting to help me, gracious gentlemen that they are, and I had to bite one or two of them to get them to back off and let me do it myself. They were gracious about that as well. Apparently, I have a very dirty...chain and so I will need to oil and rub it daily for a while. Now, I just need to wrap those handlebars. When is the next session?
We will have another opportunity to give
you a chance to learn how to change a tire.
It was a pleasure meeting with other
members of the club and I was very pleased at how everyone got their bicycle drive
trains “almost” cleaned up, and watch them change out an inner tube
with the speed and dexterity of a racecar pitman. Remember class:
practice, practice, practice!
As I told the group, I’m just a guy
that tinkers with my own bikes. You folk that attended this class will
likely tweak the tricks I taught and fine your own personal approach that works
better for you. The nice thing about bikes is they’re made up of pretty
simple machinery, as machinery goes these days, so their basic maintenance is
relatively simple too. Here some websites that you can refer to as a refresher for
a more thorough and possibly more proper approach:

Sheesh. At least everyone was safe and unharmed.

I'm originally from the Buffalo area, although I've lived in Westchester the past 28 years. I have ridden w/ the Big Wheels Cycle Club in Tonawanda, NY- a suburb ( I think their web site is down) try 716-773-0016, 716-835-7160 and I have heard of the Niagara Frontier Cycle Club (www.nfbc.com/)
I have also ridden in the Buffalo area Tour de Cure the past 2 years and possibly again this year. Riding over the Peace Bridge and up into Canada is fun, but a passport will be needed soon I think.
Lots of FLAT land north of Buffalo also Niagara County and into Canada, Lots of hills south of the city.
Interesting to note: many cyclists in that area said to me "hey-where's your kick stand?" They all use them!!

There is a lot of great cycling in Buffalo/ Niagara Falls. I'm from
Buffalo but I haven't done any riding there in quite a while.
There is the Niagara Riverwalk in Buffalo and using this along with
some other trails and some bike friendly roads you can ride up to
Niagara Falls state park on the American side. There are also a lot
of trails on the Canadian side-- one paved trail goes up to Niagara-
on-the-Lake. I believe that all the bridges between US/Canada are
bike friendly too.
http://www.gbnrtc.org/maps/ has maps for biking the Buffalo Niagara
region.

the Canadian side of the Falls? We're considering a week or so
vacation in the area in June. Any leads for information or routes,

OK.....seriously, John has done a wonderful job helping D riders
improve their skills. This is not the first season that he has
reached out to slower riders, even though he could be spending his
time riding with much better and faster riders.
The error in the newsletter was an honest mistake. Although every
publication makes every effort to avoid this, it does happen. I will
make sure that the next newsletter includes a proper correction
Thanks, John, for putting together these training rides. I hope I
have another opportunity to write about the adventures of the Rough
Riders in the newsletter. I promise to proof the copy to make sure
credit is given where credit is due.

Folks....
Any of you who've lead a ride knows it's a serious undertaking that
requires time and effort to do execute properly. As we're a
volunteer based organization, individual club members efforts need to
be recognized and not made fun of as it demotivates.
Why articles contributed to a newsletter are edited before consulting
with the individual author is a practice that needs to stop. Let's
avoid miscommunication by taking an extra step by checking with the
authors before making assumptions. It's those extra steps that
distinguish us as we raise the bar as it's not just a game but
serious play.

I am one of Johnny's Rough Riders and am proud to say that I have
officially moved up from being a D plus rider to a C minus! This is a
huge accomplishment for me. I have to give credit to John Petti for his
time and dedication he has given during his Training Rides. I am
looking forward to more riding challenges and training sessions as I
have so much more to learn. Thanks Johnny!
At least our johns aren't named Eliot.

That's one of the reasons that they assign client numbers to the Johns!
John (no client number) Coppinger
(ok, ok, you all knew that somebody just had to make a post like this given the
direction the thread was going)
