Kevan,
I have been successfully selling all my old stuff one ebay. You get a
far larger audience than the local club and top dollar for it. There
used to be a pretty good swap meet at the tandem rally, but that too
has fallen victim to eBay. I got about 40-50 for old Brooks saddles
recently on ebay, I would be lucky to get $10 for them locally.
Unfortunately, I think the local swap meet is a victim of the internet.
On the other hand, shipping of large bikes, kid backs and trailers is
expensive, and that type of equipment may be more appealing than small
parts that are easy to mail (prime ebay material). Maybe instead of
having it a separate day, we combine it with the Pedals for Progress
day. We could sell bikes, trailers, kid backs, wheels, etc. We could
charge a 10% commission for a P4P donation, and maybe take some of the
bikes that come in for P4P, and sell them, with 100% of the money
going to P4P. This way the donation of a bike goes to P4P as cash to
offset costs of transportation, but it is still a donation.
The other idea I had for the P4P bike collection was to pull out
collectible bikes (say with vintage Campy on them) and then strip the
parts (or maybe not) and sell them or the whole bike on eBay with 100%
of the money going to P4P. The idea is that a 1950's full campy bike
is worth more as parts than it is as just a regular bike in the third
world.
Just some thoughts.
