Steve Solomon runs an annual bike safety event for low-income kids in
White Plains, and is looking for a few volunteers for his event on
May 6. Here's his story:
I am a trustee of a Charitable Foundation that runs an annual
bicycle safety rally in White Plains. It was set up to honor my
sister, Jill. She was an avid cyclist who was hit and killed by an
18 wheel truck in Manhattan while riding her bicycle to work- she had
just turned 30 one week prior.
We aim to serve underpriviledged elementary school kids in the
community- usually around 75-80 attend. We provide free helmets
(which we make sure fit properly for each kid), examine their bikes
to make sure they are functioning properly and that the seat height
is appropriate and tires are properly inflated, have the kids
navigate through an obstacle course, and members of the White Plains
Police Dept. bicycle patrol officers discuss bicycle safety, rules of
the road and the importance of wearing a helmet. We also provide
refreshments and a D.J. for entertainment. Mayor Joseph Delfino
usually attends and addresses the children and their parents about
bike safety.
The reason I am contacting your organization is because we need a few
volunteers to help (fit helmets and/or do bike safety checks). The
event is run by the City Of White Plains Recreation & Parks and by
some of the trustees and friends of trustees. Its called "The Jill
E. Solomon Bicycle Safety Rally" and it will take place Saturday, May
6th at Kittrell Park from 10 am until noon. Kittrell Park is located
on the corner of Fisher Avenue and Bank Street in White Plains. If
some of your members want to participate I would be happy to give
them directions to the event.
We would be very grateful if a few of your members can make it to
this event.
Yours truly,
Steven Solomon
