LLoyd,
I've never used a fixed-gear bike so I can't give you any direct advice but Sheldon Brown of Harris Cyclery has a huge amount of information on the subject at http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html .

Subject: [WCCChat] Fixed gear
My new office is at Chelsea Piers, right on the west side bike path.
Since this route is relatively flat, I am toying with the idea of
getting a fixed gear bike in order to put some extra miles on my legs
during lunch or after work. What's your experience with using a fixed
gear for training rides? Parts of the route can be crowded so I am a
little concerned about using a fixed gear where I might have frequent
speed changes or stops. Any recommendations regarding the bike itself?
