Happy New Year Friends, Family & "the recently engaged" Dennis O'Connor:
Just wanted to say a quick, "What's Up"?
I'm looking forward to a great 2008.
Attached below is a link to Wheel of Fortune's ESPN spot, shot before the break. I'm not in it, but three of co-workers (4 if you include Pat Sajak) are, its kinda funny/cute.
Right now on ESPN, they're talking about the Uruguay Rugby Team that inspired the t-shirt, "Rugby Players Eat Their Dead!!!" What a sport - ha ha.
New Year's Resolution: Improved Fitness, I've got a lot more soccer and tennis (and a little more rugby too) to play in 2008 (and a few years beyond that).
Once again, Happy New Year!!!

Don't get caught with egg on your face. Play Chicktionary! Check it out!
I've got our next 3 Road dates confirmed, our 2008 events. Let me know if any of you want tickets to see the shows (for rugby guys even if I don't know you personally - don't hesitate to respond). I'll get in touch with everyone who responds a little closer to the tape date and we'll sort out the specifics.
The guys who have seen the show seemed to really enjoy it and I'm usually available for a couple of beers that evening.
Chicago - March 7-9 (at Navy Pier)
Hawaii - September 12-14 (on the beach at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island)
Orlando - December 12-14 (at Sea World)
____________________ Unfortunately that means no Aspen Ruggerfest with the VA Cardinals but hopefully there's a 35 team for Fort Lauderdale and we're playing in Avalon again this summer; now that I'm 40 maybe I can safely return to Saranac Lake, too.
Since I'm looking at going to Dubai and South Africa in 2009, I think I'm likely to stay in country in 2008 (I think it will be the first year since 2000 that my passport will collect dust for a whole year).
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all y'all!!!

Fellows,
Please accept my apologies if you receive this email several times or even once if you didn't want it. I had to merge several rosters (and am mailing to two groups). I am afraid that I am still going to miss some people that should be getting on the list. We will have a better system in place in 2008. Actually, Mike Herron, I believe that I have missed many of the 50+ rosters. Please forward this to them.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Virginia Beach for the banquet on January 19th. Please make sure to RSVP, either way. Mike Herron (mike.herron@pilotonline.com) is keeping track. The room is big.. the most expensive drink is $4, the food is good, we will have music, we have some folks to recognize and it will mean more if YOU can be there.
2008 Schedule? Please review & let me know which events you would be interested in attending/playing?
We have a number of options for 2008 and this is an effort to firm up the various tournaments and events that we will send Cardinal entries. Please review and let me know if you have questions. Please respond by email and let me know in which events you would participate. I am hopeful that you will circulate this and return your answers to me by mid-January. Hopefully we can have it done before the banquet.
January 19th - Banquet - Virginia Beach - everyone is welcome. A good opportunity to bring a prospective Cardinal or a retired player. Also a great chance to test the mettle of a girlfriend, drive your wife over the edge, etc.
Feb 8,9,10, 2008 USA Sevens - San Diego - I went last year as did several other Cardinals. There is an over 35 - social - one day 15's tournament on the Friday (Feb 8th) before the Sevens take place on Saturday & Sunday.
Feb 23, 24, 2008 Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest - Depending upon the level of interest we will enter sides in the following brackets - 35+, 45+, 50+ and hopefully we will kick off the 55+ with a Florida Old Boys side. We are also considering entering an open division side. The tournament is held before the regular club side matrix matches begin and it would be great to have an invitational side of future Cardinals getting to play together. Between the clubs in Virginia, Harrisburg, Carolina, Philly, Atlanta, Life - you would think we could collect a nice tour side.
March 15, 16, 2008 St. Patrick's Day Rugby Tournament - Savannah - Last year the Cardinals entered a 35+ side in the Old Boys bracket and won the tournament. Depending upon the level of interest we could also enter a Cardinals side in another bracket as well. Not Old Boys, perhaps Social?
March 20-31, 2008. Chile Rugby tour. This is a tour being organized by Rich Etzkorn, The deadline to be included is close at hand but if you want more information then please contact Rich. RGEtzkorn@yahoo.com
April 26, 27, 2008 Maggotfest - Missoula - Last year, the Cardinals supported a Life College Alumni side. We won all of our matches and it was a wild weekend. We could enter a side this year.
April/May - dates unsure yet - Evergreen - Vancouver, Canada - There is a strong old boys group here. They have a tournament and regularly field sides that are 40+, 50+ and even 60+.
June 15 or so, 2008 - Stone Harbor - one match. Very competitive, nice venue. We need to go back and win that one. Last year the age was 33+ and the rules were modified to mirror those used in Bermuda in International 33+ competition.
Aug 1-3, 2008 - Saranac Can-Am Rugby Tournament - Saranac/Lake Placid - We could enter several sides in this years tournament. 35+ is back, 45+, 50+ and Open.
September 1-8 approx. 2008 - Scotland Tour - Golden Oldies - Cardinals supporting Poltroons. Phil Dorsey is the Cardinal contact for the tour. If you are interested, you should contact Phil now. PhilD@dorseylaw.net
September 18-21, 2008 - Aspen Ruggerfest - 35's, 45's, 50's and 55's.
Any other events that you are interested in that aren't listed above? Please let me know about them and whether you would be interested in organizing a side to that or another particular event.
Hope all of you enjoyed Thanksgiving, have great holidays and are doing something to work out. We play in less than twelve weeks.

There is a group from Norfolk heading to San
Diego for 7s. Is there
any ticket package that we can jump in with? Please let me know if
there will be a Cardinal Social anywhere so that I can hoist a few
with everyone!

Mike- Please keep me on the mailing list, but it looks
unlikely I'll grow new knee cartilege,so mark me down
as unavailable for the foreseeable future..I treasure
the Cardinal experience and enjoy the e-mails however.

I am planning on going to Ft.Lauderdale
and Aspen this
year. Please keep me informed of details as they develop. Happy Holidays to you
and Bethany, and I look forward to seeing you at the banquet if not before.
Please accept my apologies if you receive
this email several times or even once if you didn't want it. I had to merge
several rosters (and am mailing to two groups). I am afraid that I am still
going to miss some people that should be getting on the list. We will have a
better system in place in 2008. Actually, Mike Herron, I believe that
I have missed many of the 50+ rosters. Please forward this to them.
Looking forward to
seeing as many of you as possible in Virginia
Beach for the banquet on January 19th. Please make
sure to RSVP, either way. Mike Herron (mike.herron@pilotonline.com) is keeping track. The room is
big.. the most expensive drink is $4, the food is good, we will have music, we
have some folks to recognize and it will mean more if YOU can be there.
2008 Schedule? Please
review & let me know which events you would be interested in
attending/playing?
We have a number of options for 2008 and
this is an effort to firm up the various tournaments and events that we
will send Cardinal entries. Please review and let me know if you have
questions. Please respond by email and let me know in which events you
would participate. I am hopeful that you will circulate this and return
your answers to me by mid-January. Hopefully we can have it done before the
banquet.
January 19th - Banquet -
Virginia Beach- everyone is welcome. A good opportunity to bring a prospective
Cardinal or a retired player. Also a great chance to test the mettle of a
girlfriend, drive your wife over the edge, etc.
Feb 8,9,10,
2008 USA
Sevens - San Diego - I went last year as did several other Cardinals. There is an
over 35 - social - one day 15's tournament on the Friday (Feb 8th) before the
Sevens take place on Saturday & Sunday.
Feb 23, 24, 2008 Fort
Lauderdale Ruggerfest - Depending upon the level of interest we will enter sides in the
following brackets - 35+, 45+, 50+ and hopefully we will kick off the 55+ with
a Florida Old Boys side. We are also considering entering an open division
side. The tournament is held before the regular club side matrix matches
begin and it would be great to have an invitational side of future Cardinals
getting to play together. Between the clubs in Virginia,
Harrisburg, Carolina,
Philly, Atlanta,
Life - you would think we could collect a nice tour side.
March 15, 16, 2008 St.
Patrick's Day Rugby Tournament - Savannah - Last year the Cardinals entered a 35+ side in the Old Boys
bracket and won the tournament. Depending upon the level of interest we could
also enter a Cardinals side in another bracket as well. Not Old Boys, perhaps
Social?

organized by Rich Etzkorn, The deadline to be included is close at hand but if
you want more information then please contact Rich. RGEtzkorn@yahoo.com

A beer after playing a game of football, a long run, or a strenuous round of golf can be good for the body, scientists say.
Kevin Pietersen relaxes with a cold beer after a hard game of cricket
In a rare piece of good news for those who like a pint, Spanish researchers say beer can help someone who is dehydrated retain liquid better than water.
Prof Manuel Garzon, of Granada University, also claimed the bubbles in beer help to quench the thirst and that its carbohydrate content can help to replace lost calories.
Prof Garzon asked a group of students to do strenuous exercise in temperatures of around 40şC (104şF). Half were given a pint of beer, while the others received the same volume of water.
Prof Garzon, who announced the results at a press conference in Granada beneath a banner declaring "Beer, Sport, Health", said the hydration effect in those who drank beer was "slightly better".
Juan Antonio Corbalan, a cardiologist who worked formerly with Real Madrid football players and Spain's national basketball team, said beer had the perfect profile for re-hydration after sport.
He added that he had long recommended barley drinks to professional sportsmen after exercise.
Previous studies have shown most alcoholic drinks have a diuretic effect – meaning they increase the amount of liquid lost by the body through urination.
Dr James Betts, an expert on nutrition and metabolism at Bath University, said a moderate amount of beer might be just as good as water at helping the body retain liquid, but that he doubted it could be any better.
Dr Betts said: "If you are dehydrated to start with following exercise, a beer, as opposed to a spirit, probably does not have a high enough concentration of alcohol to induce a diuretic effect."

Isn't it funny how mergers always seem to end up with consumers paying more money for less service.
I happily paid for Rugby Mag since the 80s and subscribed to Goffonrugby for the last 3 years and now that they've merged there seem to be fewer new stories in erugbynews and now Rugby Magazine is cutting its service in half, wonderful.
So speaking of Masters Rugby, what's on deck for the Cardinals 35s?

Running Southern Hemisphere rugby has to humiliate its antithesis.
The English choke the life out of a beautiful exciting sport. You know if they could get away with kicking 1 penalty and then laying on the ball at midfield for 79 minutes they would.
The only way there is going to be an entertaining match is if the Boks go up by 21 early and England has to score tries to get a tie.

Zinc on Main Street. Owned by a couple of French Guys and the local rugby team gather there. Should be a craic
Fados, 808 7th Street NW (on 7th and H Street NW across from Verizon Center).
Does anyone know of a place in Charlottesville that shows the games? I looked at the Setanta website and nothing showed.

Two opportunities to support local youth rugby and watch the RWC;
This Sat, Oct 13, Alexandria Rugby (AR)is hosting a Rugby World Cup LIVE Fundraiser, Membership and Semi-Final 1 Event at O'Connell's in Old Towne at 3pm, featuring;
Quarter-Final 1 Winner England v Quarter-Final 2 Winner France (could this battle be a modern-day sequel to the Hundred Yrs' War?). Also, AR will focus again on building membership (21 and over) w/ new members signing up for an inaugural package that includes a tshirt and membership card for only $30. Finally, we will round off as well as complete the day w/ a 50/50 fundraiser, plus our newest members will be eligible to win glasses of our newest sponsor Heineken (official sponsor of the 2008 RWC). Thanks, hope to see you there, and please join us, literally, so we can gather and maintain the resources needed to support our current as well as future programs.

Pierre, you stole my idea for my first email upon returning from France.
Let me tell you I was in the worst place in the world to be an All Black supporter, Old Port's public square in Marseilles. 30,000+ Frenchies, cocky England and Springbok fans and bitter Aussies all united, it seemed, against ME!!!
The rumors are true French guys outside of Paris aren't as big a bunch of douche bags as the Parisians but still they let me have it in a good natured and "oh so superior way". On the good side my mates paid for my tickets to both matches and my accommodations so I fulfilled my end of the deal and rooted for England for the first time ever and even belted out "Swing Low..." out loud. Fiji almost redeemed my weekend when they scored two tries with only 14 guys on the pitch but no such miracle, and misery really needed some South African company.
I ran into a couple of old friends from college and my life as a rugby whore and helped the "Rugby Channel" guys keep an Indian joint open an extra couple of hours doing the curry and beer thing. "Good Craic", as my mates would say.
My mates are all English so it was a miserable miserable rugby weekend and I had to play "the good sport" buying beers and dinner the last night. Every once and while I had to break the mask and remind them that "the greatest game of the year" should be a match where the winning side actually scored a try or two - ha ha. But beyond that I was a good faux subject of the Commonwealth.
I hate France, but I have to admit I was more scared of France than anyone else because they're so lucky. I didn't notice any luck this time. The Kiwis seemed to have the ball the entire match but didn't score...
...oh well, I'm getting depressed again so I better stop.
Final note: saw Lawrence Dallaglio and wingers Sackey (sp) and Robinson hanging out in Old Port as well. No one really bothering them, just cheering as they walked by (except for the South Africans who booed).
I'll be supporting Pumas and Froggies next weekend.
Peace,
-jcs

Windows Live Hotmail and Microsoft Office Outlook – together at last. Get it now!
Many of the games I played while with Roanoke RFC (mid 70s) were refereed by John Melish. He also was the selector for the first Virginia Union select side which played at Saranac (1979).
I saw John as recently as two years ago, walking the sidelines at the Ed Lee Cup, keeping in touch with the sport he loved and that he devoted so much of his time, efforts and talents.
I am deeply saddened to learn of his death but I can say that his legacy as a benefactor of rugby will long be remembered.
