This is a ride I mentioned last Fall. 100 miles
with 9000 feet of climbing, in and around Austin.
It's happening again at the end of this month, if
any of you are interested. I'm thinking about doing
it.

Tour Das Hugel – April 30, Saturday

Start time: - 7:00am

Start location: Under the Mopac bridge in Zilker park (Stratford Rd. side)

T-shirts: TBD – Working on a new shirt. If we do have shirts they will be $10.

Cost of the Ride: Free! Donations for sag wag support appreciated.

In preparation for the ride read the "frequently asked questions" section below.
In addition, you will find a brief outline of the major hills/ course.

Part I

Return to start - Zilker

Climbing: ~9000 ft (or so)

Note: Ride at your own risk. Not responsible for accidents or injuries.

Feel free to pass this along to “your friends”

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Where do we meet?

A. Under the Mopac bridge in Zilker park. This is the park side bridge off of
Stratford rd. Enter off of Barton Springs rd. It's close to the hike & bike
trail bridge.

Q. What time do we meet?

A. 7:00 with a step off at 7:15 sharp. We will leave at 7:15 so get there
on-time.

Q. Can we invite others?

A. Of course. Please pass it along to any interested person(s).

Q. Is there a map?

A. Yes. I'll bring them for the ride. I would recommend that you don't even look
at it. It's better to surprise your body and mind. Please note we will have a
couple of minor course changes.

Q. Are there exit points.

A. With any good amusement ride we have several emergency exits. The course is
such that you can peel off and soak you legs at anytime. Of course, you will not
be allowed to wear the "Tour Das Hugel" t-shirt and you may be considered a
second class citizen and will never get anything better than a middle seat in
row 31 on all airlines.

Q. What will be the pace?

A. Slow - course management is key. If we avg 15, we are doing great.

Q. Water breaks?

A. Yes

Q. What is the total distance?

A. ~100 miles

Q. How much climbing is there?

A. It's the Golden Corral of Hills... eat all you want/can. We should hit 9000
ft of climbing.

I know that we talked about doing the Rosedale Ride
as a team this coming Saturday, and I said that I
was going to ride it, but I've changed my mind and
will be doing the Pedal Power Wildflower Ride which
starts in Johnson City, and goes through the Willow
City Loop.

The scenery[1] on the Wildflower ride will be so much
nicer, and since there's no Stonewall Slog on the ACA
agenda this year, it will be my only chance to ride
Willow City Loop.

John and I also had a chance to fall back to bring one another
back up to the group, when one of us fell behind. Wow, even I
can't understand what I just wrote. Let me rephrase...

Early in the ride, John fell behind the pack, for some reason.
I fell back to lead him back up to the pack. Later on in the
ride, he returned the favor for me. That was pretty cool.

The Rosedale Ride ( http://www.rosedaleride.org/ride/index.html ) is
up next, on April 2.

A quick observation after reading the comments about Saturday's ride.

This was a very successful club ride. Although our ride distance was 60-70
miles, it was a little early in the season, and we hadn't been out on our
road bikes in several weeks, we completed the ride with no significant
problems because we rode well together. The pace was moderate and we took
turns leading the group.

I'd like to encouage more Velocity members to join us in the next few weeks.
Some big charity rides are coming up this spring and riding with the club
would great way to prepare for those events.

Scott, I hope that didn't cause your HR to get too far above your
AT, as we worked so hard to try to keep you aerobic during the
ride, due to coach's orders.

Frank/John,
Great ride write-up.

You guys are riding strong - all that hard work is showing. I am
truly impressed. Your new nicknames are as follows:

- Fast Franky Irwin
- John Haul-well
- Jim Haul-@ss Hutton

To be honest, I think I was on the front when we missed the turn
onto 260. If I remember correctly, I was trying to guide the
paceline through the smoothest part of the turn ahead. Oh well,
that detour turned out to be quite pleasant.

What made the ride even more perfect was the fact that we missed a
line of vicious thunder storms.

Did anyone besides me see John and Maureen "necking" at the traffic
lights? You guys are great!

Scott

I concur with Mr. Irwin regarding the weather - it was absolutely perfect!

However, we weren't actually dropped from the lead group. Our strategy was
to control the group's pace from the back of the pack. It worked well.

And Frank, don't blame yourself for that missed turn. It wasn't well
marked. Besides, we did finally turn south on the right road - it was just
out of sequence.

And that side trip up and back down Tower Road (actually Tower Peak) gave us
a chance to see your climbing style. :)

Let's all go to Kerrville this Friday and ride the Willow City Loop early.

Hey Folks,

I just noticed that the meeting notes have an incorrect date for the
Armadillo. The Armadillo will be on Saturday, May 7 this year.

The 125 mile route should be fun! :-)

Five Velocity Cycling team members (Maureen, Jim Hutton, John Howell, Scott
Pigford, and myself) showed up for the ACA Leanderthal ride on Saturday.
It turned out to be a good morning for a ride. Maureen chose a shorter
ride, and the rest of us opted for the 60-mile ride (which Jim forecast
would turn into a 66-mile ride).

Jim took a few guys with him and left the three of us (and a couple of
others), but we caught up with him later. We had a group of about 8
folks for the rest of the way home. It was a good ride, with a nice
pace and some good hills.

At one point, we missed a turn and didn't realize it until we were
about 4 miles down the road. We're not sure who was on the front
of the pace line at the time, but we know who's fault it was. Either
John was on front, or I was on front, and John didn't tell me to
turn. ;-) We did make another false turn, up Tower Road, which led,
as Jim predicted, to a nice little climb. At the top of this climb,
we met a part of our group who had left us earlier (after the missed
turn), and also went down this road, to find out that it was a dead
end.

Wading across the San Gabriel River on the way back was refreshing,
and those who kept their shoes on left those of us who crossed
barefooted. When we got to 2243, it was a right turn to go directly
back to the school (and our cars) or a few extra miles to "follow
the route." We could smell the parking lot (or else it was Scott's
aftershave) and decided to head straight back.

We ended up with 66 miles, just as Jim predicted. That guy's good!

Yesterday, I did a ride with my MS150 team. What I thought was going
to be a 45-mile ride for me turned into a 75-mile ride. We did the
reverse of the Leanderthal route from Parmer to Liberty Hill (eliding
the wrong turn), then back on Bagdad Rd. The pace was 3mph slower than
the Saturday ride, so it wasn't too bad. I stayed aerobic pretty much
the whole time.

Meeting Notes March 14, 2005

The following summarizes the meeting's topics and discussion.

1. The topic at April’s meeting will be long distance cycling. Our speaker
will be Marlene Merritt. Marlene was coached by our own Stan Truxillo for a
year in preparing for the "TransPac" tour that she completed in 2004. She
will be repeating this event in 2005 as a member of the support staff.
Marlene works as an acupuncturist with a special interest in cycling related
treatment.

2. In February, Stan Truxillo conducted a second aerobic threshold testing
session at Bicycle Sport Shop. The results generally confirmed the accuracy
and reasonableness of the session conducted in January. In view of the
seasonal nature of our training programs, several of the members present
were interested in repeating the testing process on a quarterly rather than
monthly basis.

3. There is a growing interest in participating in road racing as a team
activity. Several members would like to participate in the local Tuesday
night races on the Southeast side of Austin. That program begins in
April/May after the change to Daylight Savings time.

4. The regularly scheduled hill workouts on Mesa will be moved to Wednesday
nights for the next few weeks. Depending on member interest, we may want to
keep the workouts on Wednesday nights to allow participation in other
activities on Tuesday nights. We are now meeting at 6:00 pm at the top of
Mesa. Start times will be adjusted as sunlight permits.

5. Several upcoming events were discussed.

Easter Hill Country Tour: Rick Byrnes has an enclosed shelter reserved at
the Kerrville Schreiner State Park for Thursday and Friday nights of the
event. Members are encouraged to contact Rick to inquire about available
space and join him for the activities. For those who have not previously
participated, there are a variety of rides available to the cyclist on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, all of which start from the
Kerrville/Schreiner University area. Go to the website at
http://www.ehct.com for additional information regarding registration,
schedule and fees.

Rosedale Ride, April 2: The Rosedale Ride benefiting the Rosedale School
will start from Samsung Semiconductor. Start time is 8:30 am. Entry fee is
$25.00 (late fee is $30.00). This will be the official Velocity ride for
April 2.

Armadillo Hill Country Classic, May 2: the Austin Cycling Association will
putting on the Armadillo Classic. Volunteers are needed both before and
during the event, so if you want to ride, sign up to help out in some of the
preparatory activities. This is one of the best organized and presented
charity rides in the local area.

The weather is supposed to be clear and warm for a change.

How about joining me on ACA's Leanterthal ride tomorrow.

9:00 start tiime.

How about getting together for lunch?
Does anyone know a great Bar-B-Que place out there?
The one at Seward's is the best I've had in that part of town. But it's a
little out of the way.

After all the emails going back and forth, I didn't get out there for the
ride tonight. Too much work - plus it was a little chilly.

And it looks like tomorrow night will be rainy and/or cold.

Maybe next week.

It was only last night that moving the workouts to Wednesday nights was
actually discussed at any length. That discussion occurred in the Velocity
club. I just posted the minutes this morning.

I thought it was supposed to rain today. However, I'm flexible - if the
weather is clear and the streets are dry I'll try to get out there this
evening - how many other members of these groups are interested?? Drop me a
quick response will you?

I can be there at 5:30 or 6:00 pm for a couple of climbs. And I'm willing to
try to get back out there Wednesday night.

A word to the wise - if you're planning to get in condition for some big
rides this spring, these hill workouts are a great way to start your
program. It's a good 30-60 minute workout in the middle of the week that
will get you stonger quickly.

We invite people of different skill levels to ride at their own preferred
speed. It's not a contest - just an opportunity to push yourself a little.
And yes Kristen, each climb and cool off cycle does take 10 to 15 minutes.

Velocity Cycling

Tonight's meeting will be at REI in their upstairs conference room.

Regarding moving the Mesa workouts to Wednesday night - I could live with
that.

Additional things to consider: after we get into daylight savings there
should be a Tuesday night criterium series starting up. Additionally, a few
members with other commitments on Tuesday night might be open for some
hillwork on Wednesday.

So, let's talk about it at tonight's meeting.

Anything for you, Mr. President.

You da man! I'm also finding good results from the repeats. Yesterday,
on an MS150 team training ride, I was stopped with someone who was having
bicycle difficulty. In the meantime, the group had gotten halfway up the
hill (somewhere in South Austin). I got to the top before all but one of
them. (Yes, Scott, the group consisted of more than 2. :-)

I'll have to take a breather from Tuesday night Mesa, as I'll be taking
Conversational Italian classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights, lasting
5 weeks, starting on March 22. Maybe move to Wednesday?

Seeyas tonight. REI or Whole Foods?

Regarding the original query that started this thread - We did meet at Mesa
on Tuesday of last week for a couple or three climbs. Frank Irwin and John
Hoffner were kind enough to set a strong pace.

That little training session carried directly over to a very successful
mountain bike race yesterday in Waco. I dropped several of my strongest
competitors on climbing sections at Cameron Park.

More tonight.

3. Speakers for monthly club meetings
4. Velocity's participation in weekly ACA rides.

Scott,

Old men, when with new spouses, look for something more --- well more
easier. Something more amenable to the bonding/relationship building
process.

A guy my age and in my condition realizes that there just ain't a lot of
chances at landing that trophy wife.

It's all that and I seem to recall that every time I came out of the saddle
just to stay up with you and Frank, your response was to arise from the
saddle and promptly gap me by 40 feet.

You da man!!

John

I'm looking into doing the Chainring Challenge in June.

Is anyone else going to sign up for it?

I'm interested in doing some evening rides and/or workouts in the
Mesa/Arboretum area.

Last year I rode in the evenings with a few Velocity members on a fairly
regular basis and improved my conditioning significantly. I would like to
build on that in the upcoming months.

Tuesday night's workout program was generally "hill climbing" on Mesa.
Wednesday night's program was "timetrials/pack riding" at the Veloway.

Is there any interest in continuing those programs?

Are there any other preferences or suggestions?

I plan to be at the top of Mesa this evening - 5:30-6:00pm for a few hill
climbs. I expect to get in a fairly brief workout since it gets dark around
6:30pm.

Frank,
Are you sure you weren't singing? I swear I thought I heard you
singing as you crossed over Anderson Lane around 4:30pm. At least
you were out riding. I was picking up furniture for my parents at
Louis Shanks when I saw you spin by. I also locked my keys in the
car earlier in the day. That's my excuse.

When my alarm went off at 5am, there was only one thing that I wanted to
do, and getting up wasn't it. I ended up doing the ACA "in-town" ride at
1pm. There was no singing on that ride, so you'll have to come up with
another presentation for the meeting.

With deepest regrets,

Anyone interested in doing the ACA ride this afternoon?

If the weather clears up a little - and the pavement dries out a little, I
plan to do 30-40 miles. Anyone else interested. If so, lets do the ACA ride.
