Hi Frank.

I'm game. Riding to DP. Think I'll wear NiteRder for
return trip.

Should I look for anyone showing up at the Duck Pond at 5:30 tonight?
This will likely be my last Duck Pond Ride of the season, since DST
goes away on Sunday. It will be too dark to comfortably ride 360.

MARATHON CHALLENGE

episode: #3414

What does it take for the average person to run one of the world's toughest races? NOVA finds out in a program that's both a human story and an intriguing scientific exploration of the way our bodies respond to intense exercise demands. Filmed in cooperation with the Boston Athletic Association, NOVA has been granted unprecedented access to the Boston Marathon course and will take viewers on a unique adventure inside the human body. Every year thousands of athletes from across the globe flock to Boston to run the city's marathon, known worldwide as the ultimate test of stamina and endurance. In the summer of 2006, NOVA began following 13 novices as they took the first step toward completing the 26.2-mile race in April 2007. The group of participants includes a variety of people from diverse backgrounds - a young woman running in memory of her mother, who died in a tragic car accident; a working single mom; even a former NFL linebacker - the unifying element is that not one of them is currently a runner. Over the nine-month training period, exercise and nutrition scientists and doctors at Tufts University use sophisticated technology to monitor the physical transformations that the participants undergo. Intimate interviews reveal the highs and lows along the way. The experience will demand a transformation of mind and body; NOVA cameras will be there, following every step.

Hail Gerry!
Velocity's own Gerald King took first place in the grueling 40K Road
Race! It was an exciting sprint at the finish between Gerry and a new
arrival, who is reportedly a national champion new to the central Texas
scene! Gerry beat him by about 10 bike lengths!
Way to go, Ger!

Next, Hail Tom Hall!
Tom finished the 40K RR with the lead pack, by less than a bike length
for fourth, with the winner barely two bike lengths ahead of Tom!
Way to go, Tom!

Also present: Velocity's Janet Timmins, Bob Pillmore, and James Maynard!
We all put in a good showing, group picture to follow soon!

James' stats:
5K TT- 6th place, about 1.5 minutes off the leader, avg spd-23.6mph
10K TT- 6th place, about 3 minutes off the leader, avg spd-23.6 mph
20 K RR- 8th place, 23.0 mph
40K RR- 7th place, 20.6 mph

Janet, how did you do?
Regards,
James

No, the Pursley Rd creek crossing was wet and slick.  We got off and walked it and one guy nearly fell down walking.

I love that ride.  I know Ron is training for the TdG, so I'd expect him to be pushing it hard.  I saw Barton Creek under Loop 360 dry the other day for the first time in 6 mos (9 mos?).  Was that notorious low-water crossing on Pursley Rd dry?

A couple of out-of-town visitors were in the pack, and they raved how pretty the route was.  Cold start, then mild; good time had by all.

Now that I'm back to riding 3-4 days per week, it's nice to be able to hang with the tandem guys, at least for 33 miles.  But I should have brought something to eat; I was running on "Empty" the last 4-5 miles.

And Mitch was there (remember him?).  As I said, good hard pace...

Started off cold and stayed chilly. Scot, Frank, Jake and I first rode a loop around the neighborhoods around the Shoal Creek/35th streat before charging leisurely up Shoal Creek to 183. No hills, no traffic, a casual ride at a conversational pace. Great way to start the weekend off.

Thanks for the suggestion Scott.

Yup, it was a good ride. Jake was on a geared bike, but we made him
pick one gear and stick with it. :-)

While moving my bikes into storage I was debating selling my track bike and looking for an excuse not to, and this is it.  Not this ride, of course, but mark me down for January.

Surgery A-OK.  Local anesthetic wearing off now, so doubling the Vicodin.  Anesthetic catheter in hip will last another day or so.   Not too bad ... so far.

Which brings us back to this weekend. Mr. Scott Pigford has suggested a "Fixed Gear" ride on Saturday. ACA's ride on Saturay is "Pfinally Pflugerville" which is a mostly flat ride. A fixed gear bike on that ride could work.

Alternatively, Scott may be thinking of some sort of casual "in-town" ride, which may not be that flat. I was planning on riding with him on my track bike. If anyone else would like to join us on your fixed gear,  let us know.

By the way, when I say "fixed gear" or "track bike", I mean a road bike with a single fixed gear and brakes. Although some purists may eschew brakes, I would say that they enhance the experience when riding in traffic.

So, anyone interested?? Saturday morning, couple of hours. Exact time and location of start to be determined in the next day or two.

This is Next Friday, 11/2, though, is it not?
