Hey Gang,

I'm scheduled to start the ACA Inside Austin/Beginner's Ride at 9 a.m. on Feb 11.  I plan to work with the beginner's group.  Would anyone be available to help start the regular ride? (According to the Beginner's Ride program, there should be two ride starters, one specifically dedicated to the beginner's group.)  If you do a hard workout on the 10th, this would make a good recovery ride; I believe the regular ride is about 23-25 miles.  I'll take the beginners for about 12-15 miles at a very leisurely pace...

We're in Atlanta this morning, trying to decide whether (weather?) to head for Raleigh or wait out the ice and sleet until tomorrow.

Regards,

Stanton

This sounds pretty good. It should be warmer (though Jim Spencer is pitting
Saturday's high at 42F), and it will let me get some much needed beauty
sleep!

I can't commit, yet, though, as I may be riding with someone from out of
town. This would still be a good ride for that, though, assuming we ride
in the afternoon.

Hi, all,
Since the weather holds the promise of crappiness this Saturday, I suggest we
ride the 1 pm ACA ride Sprinkle Sprint. The high on Saturday, according the
Weatherunderground, will be 50. I imagine it will be on the cool of 50
nonetheless.

I'm open to other rides as well. The key is that my butt needs to be on the
saddle Saturday.

Comments? Suggestions?

Hi, all,
I'm planning a trip toe West Texas the week of 2/12/07. I'm staying 2 nights
at the lodge in the Basin at Big Bend. Then I'm doing 2 to 3 nights in Marfa.
I plan to do a lot of riding in preparation for Hammerfest. My room in Big
Bend has 2 double beds in case anyone's interested.

Speaking of Hammerfest, I managed to snag a room at the Limpia Inn in Ft
Davis for Hammerfest. Snag yours if you're going.
Best,
Robert

I'm not sure if he's on this list, or if he's paid his Velocity dues
yet this year,
but I heard that Lance A. was involved in the project, and there was some talk
of a Lance A. museum to be associated with it.

The clinic will be in Frisco, just north of Dallas.  There's a possibility of a clinic in Austin later this year.  As I'm on the bench with tendinitis, the timing is good for me right now.

I see nothing on the UT Cycling web site or in their forums about a Big View time trial:

John,

Talk about setting up a super excuse for poor riding performance!!!!!

I am very glad that the cause of your events has been found and a cure was effected.  I was getting worried about you having something really uncontrolled happen to you.

Anything involving the heart is not minor but this sounds like it should be ok.

I truly hope that this is a first and last for you.

At least your physical fitness level makes recovery faster and better that a couch potato.

Hopefully, all things will be better as you go forward.

Subject: [velocity-cycling] What I had was "supraventrical tachycardia"

As some of you may know, I was hospitalized for a day and a half due to a
series of fainting spells just before Christmas. Various heart tests proved
inconclusive, so I was referred to a cardiologist specializing in heart
rthym disturbances. 24 hours of heart monitoring proved inconclusive, but
there was some indication that heart rthym issues were the culprit. To try
to capture one of these disturbances, I was given a "event" heart monitor
to wear for month.

Three days later, driving home from a 40-mile road ride on Sunday (ACA San
Saba Loops), my heart rate began to fluctuate from 60 bpm to around 150 or
160 bpm every 5 or 10 minutes. Maureen and I stopped twice at pay phones on
the way home to transmit data from the event heart monitor to the doctor's
office. By Monday morning, I was scheduled for a heart ablation procedure
this past Thursday at St. Davids, with a diagnosis of exercise induced
supraventricular tachycardia. Technical explanation of ablation procedure
below. The procedure took about 3 hours under general anesthsia, but it is
an outpatient procedure so I was at home that night.

Apparently, I'm repaired; the doctor cleared me to ride as much as I wanted
this weekend as long as the insertion points for the electrodes weren't too
painful (5 insertion points in the groin area -- don't think about it). I
have to wear the event monitor for two more weeks, to make sure all is well.
This Saturday, Maureen and I did trailwork in the morning followed by a
brief mountain bike ride in the afternoon with no problems.

"A physician guides a catheter with an electrode at its tip to the area of
heart muscle where there's an accessory (extra) pathway. The catheter is
guided with real-time, moving X-rays (fluoroscopy) displayed on a video
screen. The procedure helps the doctor place the catheter at the exact site
inside the heart where cells give off the electrical signals that stimulate
the abnormal heart rhythm. Then a mild, painless radiofrequency energy
(similar to microwave heat) is transmitted to the pathway. This destroys
carefully selected heart muscle cells in a very small area (about 1/5 of an
inch). That stops the area from conducting the extra impulses that caused
the rapid heartbeats."

Glad to hear that you're fixed up, John.
Now I expect to see you doing century rides...doctor's orders.

I never know whether or not to put my tongue in my cheek. But can't have had

Quick recovery!

Sorry for the duplicate messages, but I'm posting this to the list and again to you directly, bypassing the Yahoo! servers, for the reasons described below.

From http://blog.360.yahoo.com/y_groups_team?p=561

Yahoo! Groups Mail Delivery Issues, January 25
Due to a database-related issue earlier today, we are experiencing a Groups email backlog. Delivery of messages posted between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Pacific time) today, January 25, may be delayed several hours.

Messages posted now are being processed through our backup mail servers, so they will be delivered immediately. While our primary servers catch up, Groups users may see messages that were posted earlier today delivered out of order.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you and your group members.

The Yahoo! Groups Team

UPDATE: Due to the large volume of backlogged messages, many groups are still experiencing delays in delivery. We are monitoring the situation and will keep you updated.

UPDATE January 26 5:55 p.m. Pacific time: We will continue to work on this issue until it is resolved. All Groups messages will eventually be delivered, but due to the server backup users may see messages out of order.

Well, I'm a little uncertain about my racing this spring. I just had heart
surgery yestereday and won't be able to ride for a day or two.

OK, I'm waffleing because it's cold.

But the part about heart surgery is true. Really! I mean it!!

I'll put it into the form of a ride report. In a day or so.

John

If you know of a Velocity event/ride that should go on the Velocity calendar, post it here in this group and someone will make sure it gets on the website calendar.  Please include the following:

1) Date & Time
2) Location (preferably in a form that Google Maps likes)
3) E-mail contact for the person responsible for the event/ride

If it's for a ride, include a detailed description of the planned route and the cell # of the responsible person.

Thanks.

The Superdrome is in Frisco, about 15-20 miles due north of downtown Dallas.
