Tour de Long Horn Caverns was a great ride. I did the out and back 48
distance which avoided the big downhill and related climb. The
turnaround was at the Caverns. I'll have to go back there
sometime and take the Cavern Tour.

Monthly meeting tonight 7:00 at Central Market. Plan on more a
continuation of the skills discussion from last month. This month
we'll go into warmup, hydration and energy suppliments on the ride.

If you'll recall, at last month's meeting we discussed specific bike
handling techniques that several of us had been working on. As a
result,I incorporated additional skills drills into my regular
training program. I noticed an improvement in my subsiquent races.
Thanks Bob Pillmore for the suggestions.

I just returned from the 2002 Chainring Challenge. It was a full week
of cycling (June 9 through June 15) in the Longview area. Mileage
for the week was approx. 480 with a longest distance of 81 miles and
shortest of 52.

When driving through the Northeast Texas area via the interstate
highway system, you see gentle rolling countryside as it passes by.
When cyclng daily on backroads in that same area, you FEEL the
countryside as a series of climbs and descents on a realtime basis.
The weather was absolutely perfect. The temperatures were moderate
with frequent cloud cover. And, the trees which lined the highways
minimized the effect of crosswinds.

There were 150-200 strong cyclists on each days ride. With the
majority being experienced club riders, the tendency was to group in
pacelines of varying sizes and configurations. As the week wore on,
most riders showed measureable improvements in both their personal
fitness and pace line skills.

Perhaps more Velocity members will be able to participate next year.

Our daily routine was to rise early eat quickly & get out on the road
before it became hot for a pleasant day's ride. Most of the riding was
completed by mid-day. For many participants, afternoons were spent
enjoying the local cuisine and sightseeing. Personally, I just ate
from noon until 3:30 when I took a break for Yoga which preceded
dinner at 4:30. :)

I hope Stan will post some additional comments about the week.

This was my third Chainring, having ridden it in 1997 and again last year.
Each time I used it like a training camp, alternating days with the racing
bunch with rides with the liesurely tourist groups. That gave me the dual
benefits of getting to ride with a larger cross-section of those present,
and of alternating hard and easy days. Each time, I came home feeling like
I had ratcheted my fitness level up a pretty large notch, in addition to
having a great time.

Chainring riders generally "indoor camp" in school gyms for the air
conditioning, although a few set up tents or have spouses follow with camper
trailers outside. The drill is a lot like a huge slumber party, with 150
sleeping bags spread out on the gym floor. Lights out is 9 or 9:15 p.m.
Lights on is 5 a.m. That is hard the first day, but then you settle into
the rhythm of early to bed, early to rise. Breakfast is at 5:30, generally
by a PTA group or school boosters of some kind. Meal quality varies, but
tends to be very high carb and low fat.

Day one left Longview with a mass start and police escort to get out of town
traffic, and the fast group was initially about 50-60 riders. Then about 30
miles out someone put the hammer down in the hills and we got off with a
group of seven. We rolled a generally brisk pace with a few hard spurts on
climbs, sprinted for a few town limit signs, and rolled into Atlanta, Texas
at 10:30 a.m. after 74 miles and 3500 feet of climbing. There had been a
planned Chainring lunch stop at about mile 45, but we blew through that at 9
a.m. We ate our first lunch in a cafe in Atlanta, then went to the school,
helped unload bags, showered, napped, and ate another lunch at about 12:30.
Then more nap, chat, read, ate supper at 4:30 p.m., camp meeting at 6 to
discuss the day's events and talk about tomorrow's route. (This included
the "Golden Wheel Award" to some unlucky soul who got reported doing
something really dumb or embarrassing.) Local entertainment was at 7 p.m.,
then lights out at 9 again.

Each morning after that people just rolled out in small groups after sunup
at 6:15 a.m. or so, because there really isn't much morning traffic in
places like Gilmer, Texas, or Mount Pleasant, or Clarksville. The routes
were quite pretty, and even at a slower pace, most riders were off the road
by noon unless they chose to have a liesurely lunch or to jump in for a swim
somewhere along the way. Motorists were very friendly, not at all what I
had expected to find in East Texas. Sometimes Bubba is a gentle giant in a
pickup who rolls up behind you so quietly that you don't realize he is there
until someone calls "Car back!", everyone moves over single file, and Bubba
rolls by very carefully with his left side tires in the grass and a friendly
wave. Talk about changing stereotypes!

With all the riding, we ate a LOT. The only disadvantage to all the meals
was that I got sick Monday night, and had eaten so many meals I didn't know
which one had done me in. (Fortunately, it was all over by 2:30 a.m., so I
rode the next day, but fairly gently.) One of the guys said we could
summarize Chainring by saying we spent the week eating, riding to eat, or
waiting to eat. And I still lost weight...

I plan to go agan next year, but I will twist Susie's arm to go along and
take the tandem. This is too much fun to let her miss it!!

TNT and Velocity Cyclists,

Wanted to see if there was any interest in a hard ride early Sunday morning.
Was planning on meeting on the AutoBahn at 7AM for group intervals.
The format would include:
  - A warmup lap or two on the six mile loop while we decide how to break out
into evenly matched groups.
  - The smaller groups of (3-5) cyclists would then ride at a team time trial
pace for 6 miles ....short recovery....and go again. Three laps (18 miles)
total.

If we do this on the autobahn, riders who are not acclimated to the intensity
can take short bouts, rest and then catch back on at one of the crossovers.

If there is enough interest in a high energy work out like this, we can make
this a weekly thing and have different workouts to keep it interesting.

Do let me know if you are interested.

I'll be there Sunday morning (if it's dry).

By the way, I'm looking forward to doing a local ride or two Thursday or Friday
when or if the weather clears up. If anyone else is feeling a little cabin
fever &
would like to get out for a little 30-40 mile ride, drop me an email (or call).
Perhaps we can get a group going.

We've gathered a small group that is going to try
meeting on Thursday at 8am, if it's dry out... Love to
have you and others join us!

The plan is to meet at CC Mason Elementary. It is on
Lakeline, between 1431 and New Hope. Planning on doing
some of ACA's Leanderthal and Cedar Park Fever routes
from there. It'll be about 35 or so miles. Easy pace.

Cyclists,

Following up on the group intervals planed for Sunday.....
I heard from about a dozen folks who were interested in showing up, so....
We'll meet at the Veloway Parking area by 7 AM.
We may honor the ten minute rule (which means we'll be riding by 7:10)
If your running late - you may catch up with us on the Auto Bahn (that's the
MoPac extension). Once we get started, we'll stay on the 6 mile loop which
starts at the next cross-over south of the Veloway.

Hope you have a great 4th of July.
See you Sunday

Hey Prescott et al:

I hope it's ok if I take on the Velocity Sunday ride
for the 14th instead of the 7th??? I've never ridden
360 before, and ACA is having a ride around there
tomorrow that's a great opportunity to introduce
myself to the hills with a large group (safety in
numbers)...

Also, I'm planning on getting a new bike this month,
and when I do - speedie gonzalez better watch out!!!
Then I can really start doing these time trial
training sessions w/ya'll more regularly. Right now on
my Giant OCR3 bike... and - well, I'm slower than a
hippo riding a log...

Hope to see ya'll next Sunday and send us a ride
report!

~Wendy

I'm *sorry* for not making Velocity's first time trial
training ride this morning with you folks. I hope to
make it next Sunday though if you will have me...

Anyone have a summary of the ride? I wanted to know
how it went.

After a night of insomnia and waking up late... I
decided to venture to the ACA "Thigh and Low" ride on
360 as I'd never ridden 360 before and saw it as a
good opportunity to ride with a group.

Unfortunately, one of our fellow ACA riders, Marc
Miller, had an incident with a car along Westlake,
buthe is going to be okay. Ralph Smith has been
offering updates and I've heard that he is recovering
after some surgery and has a broken collarbone, 4
broken ribs, a hip that may need pin(s) and a nasty
gash to his upper leg. He is very fortunate
considering, and our thoughts are with him to wish him
a speedy recovery.

There is a monthly ACA meeting tomorrow night at 7pm,
direction's on web site:

www.austincycling.org

All are encouraged to attend as I hear they will
discuss the issue, are rethinking portions of the 360
route for ACA, and will have a bike/helmet fund for
Marc to replace his completely trashed Bianchi.

Thanks and hope to see you all soon - Wendy

Here's a great oppportunity for Velocity to get some

Anyone available to help Jesse out?

Let me know. They'd like the answers this week.

Thanks,

Velocity meeting will be at Central Market Monday August 5 at 7:00pm.
We have several club business items to discuss including a progress
report on the club jerseys and the club's participation in some of the
fall competitions.

Over the past few meetings, some of the more seasoned members have
shared both training techniques and racing experiences with the group.
I'm looking forward to a continuation of those discussions.

I am looking for a medium Velocity Skinsuit for some upcoming races. I
trashed mine in a crash last year, and apparently there will not be enough
for an order of them this year.

Anybody want to sell?

At the last couple of meetings, we've talked about posting some riding
tips on the forum - some skills we've been working on recently. Here
are a couple of things we worked on this weekend. I'd appreciate your
comments and feedback:

Climbing: When climbing a gentle grade, relax your hands on the
handlebars about 2-4 inches out from the stem, relax and drop your
elbows and shoulders, and finally, spin at about 80-90 rpm. The idea
is to relax the upper body as much as possible and put all your energy
into spinning those pedals.

Turning fast: You will frequently hear about putting your weight on
the outside pedal (which should be down), pulling or tilting the
handlebars to the inside etc. A couple of additional ideas: move
slightly up on the nose of the saddle and put your inside knee firmly
against the top tube. This morning I found myself making a sudden
right turn on gravel after a fast descent. The little move forward and
knee on the top tube really helped stabilize and turn the bike.

The turning fast suggestions sound good.

When I go around corners at speed, and I'm not pedalling, I stick out my
inside knee to the inside of the curve. I have better balance and control
that way (though it increases wind resistance a little.) This is a
motorcyle racer's trick.
In general I minimize turning the handlebars, which really ruins my
stability. I prefer using body language, as you did.

Something that works for me:

- When climbing longer climbs, scoot back on the seat an inch or two.  It seems to activate your hamstrings/glutes more, taking some of the burden off of your quads.

I'm glad you brought that up Kyle. And, that technique can come in handy in a couple of different areas. One is the long grade which you mentioned - with the loose hand grip.

A second is on the bumpy road/railroad crossing.  When encountering the "distressed" pavement surface that we had today, you can upshift one gear, slide back on the saddle, and apply a little extra power.  That will all serve to reduce your weight on the saddle and the vibration of the uneven pavement.

Train, Train, Train.

Also, work on improving your peddal stroke. A good pedal stroke uses
the whole strokc. Concentrate on all four quadrants of the stroke.
Peddal like you have an egg between your foot and the pedal. That will
force you to use the rest of the stroke, rather than just the down
stroke. Increase your pedaling cadence as well. All of these things
contribute to increasing your speed and your ability to maintain the
increased speed.
