Hello, I hope everyone's New Year is going great so far, training
hard and staying safe.
Just a quick reminder, the VAJ Group poll will be closing at the end
of this week so if you haven't voted yet make sure to cast your vote
by then.
Also, if most of you haven't heard already there is a martial arts
expo being held this weekend (Jan. 17, 18, 19) in Atlantic City, New
Jersey. There will be seminars, a trade show, Friday night fights,
tournaments and a banquet held. For more information on this Mega
Martial Arts Weekend stop by www.actionnetworks.net. I hope to see
you there.
To all the new members of this group, welcome and I hope you enjoy
our discussions and activities that we have to offer.
To our existing members, the VAJ staff thanks you for being a part of
this group and we hope you will continue to be.
To all students of VAJ:
Testing week was held at the Defense Institute in Colorado Springs
from December 16th through the 20th. With the Promotion Ceremony
held on Saturday December 21st. He had two students travel to the
World Headquarters the week before with Sensei John, and they
represented well. All the students that tested in CS trained very
hard, and it showed in their performance during the entire week.
The following students were promoted to their next belt:
Beth Puera Red Belt (in NYC)
Jason Hall Yellow Senior (in NYC)
Laderious Parrish Yellow Senior
Troy Bauer Yellow Senior
Mark Wulfke Yellow Belt
Phil Burns Yellow Belt
Bill Tolley Yellow Belt
All these students earned what they now wear around their waist.
They are the inspiration for the new students coming through the
doors. We are very proud of all of them.
Thanks Professor David for your leadership.
Sensei Eric LaLone
Sensei John Petrone
Not that I know of.. but the instructors on the bottom should be able to give
you more info as far as when it will end and how to get there.. hope you enjoy
it!!
Wow Brother, Welcome to the group..seems like an
excellant event to attend.. I will be calling to go! Is
there a website where I can gain further info?
I am a beginner to jujutsu in general, just started out. I don't take
vee arnis because it costs a little too much for me, but I have a
couple of his instructional tapes and they are all good. I went to
their school in manhattan to watch a class, and if I had the money I
would be there in a New York minute. For all of you that are reading
this, there is a Big Masters Exhibition in the Bronx January 25th,
2002. That was one of the reasons I went over to Prof. James school,
so that I could give him a flyer because I DEFINITELY thought he
needed to be doing his thing there, and I didn't see his name on the
list. Here is a list of the people that will be there, though I think
that there will be many more.
Grandmaster Blackhawk San Carlos Grandmaster George Crayton
Grandmaster Papasan Canty Grandmaster Reno Morales
Grandmaster Rico Guy Professor Klaus Schumacher-Germany
Kushinda Lamarr Thornton Professor Jonathan Stewart
Dr. Rocky Farley, Ph.d-Maryland Master Rahim Alemeen-California
Grandmaster Billy Davis Grandmaster John Smith-New Jersey
Grandmaster Pop Edwards sr. & Jr. Dr. Tarik Shah
Kushinda Mitch Caster Sr. Master Willie Griffin
Master James Abdullah Master Abbey "Lady Dragon" Wilson
Master "Mo" Mahaliel Bethea Shihan Darlene DeFour
Master Israel Gonzalez Sensei Rachel "Rocky" Rivera
Professor Amin Hassan-Deleware Master Israel "Tiger"
Renshi Gregory O. Fann Sr.-New Jersey Sensei Anthony Vargas
Shihan Derrick Williams*** Sensei Lou Paler
Sensei Reginald Brown Master Lil Katan Jones
Sensei Yoko Ushioda Gary-Deleware Shihan Clyde "Saint" Bowal
Shihan John Wheaton Master Earl Woodbury
Shihan Linda Ramzy Master John Gray-Deleware
Grand Master Allah Freedom Dr. Sharif Wali
Keep in mind I am taking all of these names directly from the flyer,
I do not know if everybody will show up, but they most likely will.
Even if you miss somebody, you might see a technique or two that
impresses you by a teacher you are unfamiliar with. One thing that I
have found in the six months I have been taking jujitsu is that you
will see the same lock but with a 1001 different variations. I am
only a white belt right now, so I am not an advanced practitioner or
anything like that, but I know when something is effective and
jujutsu definitely is. Plus, I am reminded by my sensei when he has a
finger lock on me.... anyway, if you need more info about the
exhibition you can feel free to call
Soke Abdul Bilal at... (347) 262-4572
Master DawnMarie Bilal (718) 292-1519
Master William Lawton (347) 210-2830
This Exhibition is being held in the Bronx, N.Y
Thank you for your time in reading this message, now let me rest my
finger....
Peace & Blessings!
I am happy to answer your questions.
I have not studied Kupigana Ngumi.
In the beginning aspect of Kamau Njia, we teach more
of an Indigenous Boxing method. This aspect of the
system teaches aspects of Thai, Filipino (Panatukan),
Indonesian (Silat), African, and Western Boxing.
We teach different aspects of ground combat from each
of these cultures as well.
GM Rico Guy is a wonderful person. He is like a second
father and a guide to me. He has taught me a lot.
Goshindo Kempo is a good system of Kempo Karate
stemming from the Jiu Jitsu schools. I am still in
contact with GM Siringano Jr.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Asante!
Baba Mwalimu Sarjeant
Brother Sarjeant I just checked how your page has been updated. I had
a question I was wondering if you have ever studied Kupigana Ngumi..I
have been with the Moyo Kazi brach for sometime now. The "Dance" is
intertined with alot of intuitive movemnts in one area of the system
I teach. I met Brother Guy in New York at some Pro Fights..what a
wonderful brother he seems like. I also met some exponents of teh
Goshindo System, which I love. That video called "Super Weapon" was
really a good look into the days of yester-year.
I would just love to say it is a pleasure to be apart of this
Yahoo Group. Peace and Greetings to you also Mr. Seargant I saw you
in a book and visited your website. I my self have had the pleasure
of Mr James bringing Master Cerilo and another brother ( whos name I
forgot)..came to perform a demonstartion of Vee-Arnis at a show in
New Jersey I gave in honor of one of my instructors that passed away.
I also saw him first at the Roberttreat hotel, have saw most of the
Vee arnis Jitsu tapes, and saw Prof. Vee/Moses Powell in "Way of the
warrior".
I hope that I can be a productive member of the group Here is a
website that needs updating of me and some members of my group. I
can't wait to network with the other members of the site!!!!

Hi All!
My name is Manny and I greet Professsor David James and the rest of the
Vee-Arnis-Jitsu family! and I recently joined this group because I studied
Vee-Arnis-Jitsu under his direction some years ago. Unfortunately, my
current schedule does not give me the necessary time for training, but I still
hope to be part of any interesting VAJ discussions, and anything else martial
arts related....
I have been out of training for awhile now, but I am still interested in
learning
about how things are going with VAJ and perhaps compare that to how we
used to do it some years ago.
I hope this forum will become a useful area for exchanging thoughts and
ideas about VAJ and other martial arts!
I welcome e-mails on these and other related subjects!
Manny
Scott FitzPatrick here in Washington, D.C. sending out a hello and an

tonioinjesus@...
Antonio, I've been studying Vee Arnis Jitsu with Professor James
for
a couple of years now. Anything I say is solely my opinion and
understanding and should not be misconstrued as an official
statement from VAJ.
With that said, let me try to answer some of your questions. As far
as I know, VAJ has been around for at least 35 years. It's
headquarters is based in New York at 25 Park Place just 2 blocks
north of the World Trade Center. It is primarily a Self-Defense
system founded by the late Professor Florendo Visitacion (1910-1999)
that incorporates Ju-jitsu, Arnis stick fighting, Thai boxing,
various self-defense techniques, and anything else that might come
in handy when your life is in danger.
Yes, a lot of the stuff you see in the movies looks extremely cool
with Jett Li, Wesley Snipes, Steven Segal, and Jackie Chan all
performing in choreographed fight scenes. I assure you, if you try
that stuff in the street with the wrong dude, you could wind up in
the hospital or dead.
Yes, a stretched-out side kick to someone's jaw may look picture
perfect but can you get it off inside an elevator? Can you defend
yourself if someone attacks you in the vestibule of your apartment
building or grabs you from behind and tries to run you into a wall?
Commercial and sometimes traditional martial arts don't address
that, preferring to focus on unreal situations.
We don't follow in the footsteps of commercial martial arts
schools.
We don't spar, break boards, do senseless kottas, or kick
imaginary
opponents in their foreheads with flying spinning back kicks. We are
for real. We train hard. Period. As the current chief instructor of
VAJ, Professor David James, says, "You're only as good as
your last
practice... Laziness will cause you pain."
Our techniques are simple and designed to address real life
situations:
1. How to defend against a one arm grab.
2. How to defend against a two hand choke.
3. How to get out of a headlock.
4. What to do if there's a gun in your back.
5. What to do if someone's attacking you with a bat or a knife.
6. What to do if someone bearhugs you from behind.
7. What to do if someone chokes you from behind.
8. What to do if someone is trying to pat you down for money.
Vee-Arnis-Jitsu is about the real world and dealing in it. Watch the
videos. Pick up any one of the 1-2-3 Hit program videos. Visit our
website at http://www.veearnisjitsu.com It will definitely be an
educational and rewarding experience.
If you have any more questions, just ask.
Take care,
James Pelton
Frank, you are the same Sensei Frank that recently got promoted to Black
belt in June right? And you also live far away in New Jersey as Professor
Dave and Sensei John commented on. I think the last time we worked
together, you were helping me with Tais 1 and 2. Otherwise I have you
confused with another Frank.
I know, I teach or used to teach Spin classes in the back room before
Professor moved the bikes. Lately, I've only been able to get to the dojo
on Thursdays. If I see you then, I'll "re-introduce" myself.
OOOsh.
Hello all, im antonio from columbus,ga 22 years old...getting back
into the martial arts...i was on a martial art video review
site...and professor vistaction tapes were rated #1..i've tried speed
hitting/tae kwon do...but now i want to do something different. I
plan to order tape #1 with professor vistacion/david james...how long
have you all been using these techniques and what have you benefited
from it? write back...
tonioinjesus@...
Sorry for the delay, I was in Miami on vacation. One of the concepts that can be
employed here, closest weapon closest target. This will dictate whether you
would use, same side, touch and go, cross side, and so on. Once again what do
you feel more comfortable with? So for example, closest weapon, change focus,
high low concept, and then I can move faster forward. I hope that helps you out.
Have you ever trained in VAJ? If so, under who? Well I have to go, be safe, talk
to you soon.
Sensei Frank
Sensei Frank, in your response to Backfist-Hammerfist-Punch you
said, "In Vee-Arnis-Jitsu following concepts is viewed more
important then technique."
My question is what concept is employed when using Backfist-
Hammerfist-Punch?
For starters,
1. I can move faster forward than you can move backwards.
2. High - Low
3. Change Focus
What have I left out?
-hello my name is sensei frank, to answer your question they are two different
techniques. backfist, hammerfist, punch is a more common technique, however you
could use hammerfist, backfist, punch if you feel more comfortable. remember in
the street you should use whatever feels more natural. in vee-arnis-jitsu
following concepts is viewed more important then technique. i hope i answered
your questions.
oosh,
sensei frank
Off the 5 angles of attack, after one blocks, one of the responses
can be backfist-hammerfist-punch. Can one also do hammerfist-
backfist-punch? If no, why?
I'm sitting at my desk doing both techniques. They both feel
natural. The only thing I can think of is if I do backfist first, I
can probably catch him in the temple or eye. If I do hammerfist
first and connect with the jaw, it may force him to cave in towards
me and my follow-up backfist will catch him on the top of his head.
Comments?
Is there a difference between Backfist-Hammerfist-Punch and
Hammerfist-Backfist-Punch. Is one more correct? why?
OOOsh.
James P.
