Wil Tarnasky holds up a package of Heaterz, one of several products the small businessman makes and sells. He recently received a letter from a law firm telling him to stop using the flame on his logo as it is an infringement on the Olympic flame.
Photograph by: Stuart Davis, Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Sun
It's a "t" that's been transformed into what looks like a lit match. But to the Canadian Olympic Committee it could be mistaken for an Olympic flame, and the committee says it will oppose its registration as a trademark.
Wil Tarnasky has already trademarked two similar logos: one for Toasterz (picture a match-like small "t" in the middle), another for Eaterz (again, think match instead of "t").
Both products heat without the use of fire. Toasterz is a reusable heat pack. Drop it in boiling water and it charges. Then when you're out in the bush, and get cold, push a button and the gel-pack firms up and heats.
Eaterz are food pouches made in British Columbia that can last five years. To heat them up, throw them in a Heaterz (with the same flaming "t") oven bag, throw in 55 cc of water and, presto, a hot meal in the middle of nowhere.
It's Heaterz that's currently causing the heat.
Tarnasky started the trademarking process for Heaterz about four years ago, receiving approval for the trademark last summer. The next step is to post the trademark and then register it. It's the posting that likely alerted the COC and led to the lawyers' letter Tarnasky received saying the COC would object to registering the trademark.
"As you can imagine, our client is quite concerned about the use and registration of a Torch or Flame design, per se, in view of the well known, if not famous, nature of the Olympic Flame and the Olympic Torch," lawyers for the COC wrote.
But lots of logos have flames, like barbecue makers, or even the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Tarnasky pointed out.
No one has asked Tarnasky to stop using the logos, not yet anyway. But he's worried that may be next.
Colbert Creative Communication designed the logo.
The products provide heat without fire, said Jim Colbert of Colbert Creative.
"So something visual representing heat would be a good way to go," Colbert said. "And a flame does a pretty good job of that."
Colbert said Colbert Creative did not have the Olympics, or even sports, in mind when it was developing the logos.
"There aren't too many other things that represent heat in such a simple visual format," he said. "So the flame was kind of an obvious way to go."
"We didn't think we were doing anything particularly original with the flame," he added.
Last summer, the COC withdrew its objection to a Vancouver-based gay men's chat line trademarking its logo, which the COC claimed looked like an Olympic wrestling pictogram used during the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal. At the time, the COC said there was little chance the logo would cause any confusion with current Olympic pictograms.
The COC said it was unable to comment by The Vancouver Sun's deadline.

Formosa is heading Down-Under for six months, probably to Melbourne, send him your best to ecomserick@.... Here he is kissing the baby for good luck while Isabelle stands helplessly by...
Low Blow, and Do Me First in "First Encounters of the Third Kind" mode, Pylon playing the straight man.
So, its goodbye Formosa, and what a great send-off it was!
Fat Boy Slim and Cream Puff failing to find the beer at the "BB". And, here is Pussygalore telling Creamy that if he wants some of this, then he's going to get some of that.
Pylon kindly offered the use of his palatial residence atop the crest of the park and an awesome run was followed by iced cold beer and pizza at said palace. Manhole is still undergoing instruction with Plunger about counting with fingers.
In any case, a rather bedraggled looking group of hashers assembled slowly in the car park, amongst them Roast, Low Blow, Do Me First, Cream Puff, Fat Boy Slim, Annie, Plunger, Dangler, Steel (with wife Isabelle and sprog), Porno Prick, Captain Hymen Grinder, Hardon, Pigeon Stool, Beheader, Malice, and later Man Hole and Goat Fucker - fifteen runners on wet and cold Saturday , plus another 3.5 hangers-on, plus hares!
Your scribe was fairly certain that the run must go around the lake, as was Malice.
Eventually we 'found' one another, and by a process of elimination found the flour leading to the conduit, and thence under the freeway. Malice making funny puking-snorting noises the whole time (or, should that be the hole time?). I turned and asked what was up with the funny noises and he shouted back, "I'm claustrophobic, asshole". But, indeed, there are options. Although, the one the hares took under the freeway via the 1.5M conduit was not the expected one, but obviously the best, and wicked fun too. The beer check was at Deer Lake, and then it was back to Burnaby Lake and thence to Pylons for Down-Downs and Pizza Pie.
Manhole bravely tested the water-tightness of Pylon's stereo system by carefully pouring 14 down-down beers over it, but it all seemed OK. Then Malice's blond squeeze complained that the pressure treated, plastic faced, chip board, with arborite strips that Pylon was burning were giving her a head-ache - in fact she described it as an allergy to wood. We all commiserated with Malice, an hour later I asked him where she was and he said, "she's still in the car...". This was DMF's reaction upon hearing that Malice's date was allergic to wood. Later, DMF held the baby, her first, and entirely missed the delicious pizza - is she getting broody?
I agree too, so ON ON to Victoria. But maybe still the next Saturday you could have a Fuck off Olympics run. somewhere far from the maddening crowds...

A message from the Victoria H3. We are having our 500th run on Sat. Feb 13, with a warm-up Dark Side on the Friday and recovery CRAAP (bike hash) on the Sunday.
The Vancouver H3 had a huge turnout for Run#1a - the whole pack + two Victorians-why not come back it's only been 20 years.
Details still being worked out, will probably be about $50-65 for all three runs, bash and trash.
Is
the Vancouver H3 doing any runs during the Olympics?
I have a full head of hair, but I want people to think that I'm bald.
So I dyed the top of my head like a bad toupee. Perfect. Nailed it perfectly
Is anyone else absolutely shocked that there would be wrestling outside of a Walmart?
I guess the parking lot wasn't big enough for a NASCAR. event.
How do you say "Miss, your camel toe just spit on my shoes" in Nerdy?
Be still, my heart!
It looks like a black hole sucking in everything around it
Not at any time of day, any day, any week, any month, or any year, has this outfit ever been a good idea.
I like skulls. I like wearing skulls. I like killing animals and gluing their skulls onto my hats. I'll probably never get laid.
Looks like someone needs a little sensitivity training.
I didn't know Siegfried and Roy shopped Walmart!
Gay look completed by the frilly pink socks.
Those shorts could not get any tighter or shorter. I can see his sperm count dropping. In this case, a good thing!
"Can you make it look like a raccoon's on my head?"
Nothing oozes class like this outfit.
Pray that the suspenders hold.
Did he just forget to put on pants?
Some people might find this inappropriate attire for shopping online---let alone in public.
Taking a break from the Big Top. (or he may be an over-grown Munchkin?)
Hot pink is not a 'slimming' color, especially if it is cutting off circulation to the rest of your body. The blue shoes are a nice accent aren't they?
Cabbage Patch Man comes complete with a birth certificate, application for adoption. Each sold separately.

Cum and Join Flying Formosa - your Hare as he sets trail through the flora and fauna of Burnaby Lake on Sat Nov 21st, 2:15pm. From Vancouver, take Hwy 1 and take the Sprott Road exit. Turn left down the hill (pass the hockey rinks on your left) and go to the first stoplight @ Kensington. Proceed straight to the stop sign (Sperling Ave). Turn left, look for the VH3 markings by the recreation centre parking lot - turn right and park. On On TBA.... hot tub may be open at the rec centre - bring your suity just in case...
Nine hashers assembled at the Hillcrest entrance to Mundy Park, including Annie & Fat Boy Slim from the Cyprus hash.
Arcelia, Ole Ole, Shagger, Porno Prick, Pigeon Stool, Plunger and the hare, followed much later by another four: DMF, LB, Hardon and Formosa. We huddled in small groups, like penguins, trying to stay warm, until Spermanator set us free while he waited for the other four, whom he dutifully delivered to a point half-way through the run. This magnificent gesture was much appreciated by these tardy specimens, except for Hardon who could not find the beer check - as if it were the first time...
So, we set off the sports fields on the W side, across the park and edged our way through a series of checks to the SE corner and into a neighbourhood. Thence, in a loop to NE corner and then back into the park for a pleasant jog on leafy trails to the beer check at the mid-point on the W side of the park. We were later graced with the hash t-shirt model and her dashing beau - she was VERY happy to see us.
There was no hash beer, although the biermaster did come to tells us that there was no beer, on his way to work. Ole Ole economised by sipping his through a straw.
Do Me First sported a truly splendid set of scabs on her left profile, and displayed a heretofor unknown disinclination to drink from the hash vessel. This artifact has been slobbered over, licked, wiped and gently mouthed by the likes of Kiddy Licker, Five Hole, Pooky and so many, many more, so DMF's shyness was hard to fathom. Some deviant scare from her past, perhaps? Look carefully, one can actually see suspicious stains on the vessel:
After very brief down-downs to welcome Annie and Fat Boy Slim, hashers from Cyprus now living in Poco, and Arcelia a virgin "family friend" of the Spermanators, we retired to Original Joe's for beer and food. Here is Hardon carefully explaining to DMF why so many wimmin end up in shelters: coz, they don't bloody listen, right?!
Next week's run is Formosa's last run with the VH3, probably at Burnaby Lake, he is heading Down Under for six months.
The Olympics train wreck is steaming toward us as high speed. There is a certain air of inevitability about it. We shall be meeting soon to discuss our hashing arrangements, any suggestions welcome.

We shall be meeting soon to discuss our hashing arrangements, any suggestions welcome.
first i have none - then i have two hares fighting for one slot...... yikes.... it was no doubt my half minded error but Sperminator rules and will set run as per vanhash website instructions. Banshee will set in December - thanks banshee (you've done all the work now relax!!!)

Hi Nick
I though I was doing next weeks hash run. If you want to do it go ahead, and I'll do one later. You will have to update the website though.
Cheers, Spermi
