I hope all of you are having a great spring so far. We are
not starting up anything yet but some of the STEP coaches want to invite you to
the Oval tomorrow (April 28th) for a fun time of playing soccer.
Anybody who is interested should be at the Oval at 5pm with a water bottle.
The annual meeting of the Wasatch Speed Skating Association will be held
on Thursday, April 16th at 6:00 PM in the World Record Lounge at the
Utah Olympic Oval. One primary agenda item is the selection of new board
members, as Tim Peck is moving to Florida (to recruit in-line skaters?),
and Ray will be out of the area for most of the year.
We will be having dinner, with the main course and drinks provided by
WSSA. We could use assistance with desserts and salads. RSVP to Ray at
rthac64575@... if you can bring dessert and/or salad.
Will will also be distributing the awards for WSSA Long Track and Short
Track series champions.

**If anyone has anything that needs brought up at this meeting, please
let me know.
**Coaches: Please let your skaters know about the going on's!

thanks Michael - the actions you have taken will likely eliminate
99.9% of the problem - moderating every message is time consuming so I
hope you won't need to resort to this.

Michael Drews writes:
Recently there have been several off-subject postings to the Utah
Speedskate Yahoo distribution list. As the creator and moderator of the
list I have removed those messages, deleted the people who posted those
messages from the list, and banned them permanently from the group.
My main purpose for setting up the group and distribution list was to
allow people to easily add their names, change their e-mail preferences,
and remove themselves from the list when they were no longer interested
in the messages.
In addition, the list allows others people from the individual clubs to
post messages of interest to the local speed skating community.
In the past there were issues with multiple people maintaining copies of
the lists of e-mail addresses, continuing to send to people who were no
longer interested, and missing new people who had joined the sport. In
addition, the full distribution list was often visible in the "To" field
of the messages that were sent out, so that individual's e-mail
addresses were not kept private, and could be picked up by various spam
programs.
Unfortunately the open nature of the Utah Speedskate group allowed three
individuals to post inappropriate message that were not suitable for all
ages. I'm sorry that the messages were received, and have taken the
following steps to prevent something like that from happening again:
1. The membership in the Utah Speedskate group has been changed from
"Open" to "Restricted." Any new memberships in the group must be
approved by one of the group moderators (currently Michael Drews and Ray
Thacker).
2. Only members of the Utah Speedskate group will be permitted to post
messages to the group.
If there are additional problems with off-subject and inappropriate
postings, the group will be changed to "Moderated" where all messages
posted to the group must be approved by a moderator.
Any individual can remove his or her name from the distribution list by
using the means listed at the bottom of this message.
E-mail continues to be the primary method of communication for Utah
Speedskating. Hopefully these changes will be sufficient to eliminate
the issues with the Utah Speedskate group and distribution list.

I suspect no one likes these spam emails whether they are smut or offers from some Nigerian banker to give you 10 million bucks - bottom line is that in our highly connected world we're highly connected to a bunch of jerks unless we take the time to prevent most of it - it's unlikely that we can prevent it all without just staying off the internet. Managing mailing lists is not as easy as one might think - I manage quite a few as a CS professor at the U, so just a couple of suggestions which may not be an option under yahoo:
1. If there is an option to not make the list visible - then don't do it - Phishers regularly grab list
names and then spam them.
2. If there is an option to not allow messages to be posted to the list by non-members then do
that as well. This means that subscribing to a list should also be moderated rather than automatic.
A bit more work but it cuts spam to a minimum.
3. As list members - we are by nature spam targets - there are ways to set up filters on your email
client to drastically reduce spam but if you're not a wizard then you might find it easier to just delete
anything and everything you don't instantly recognize as legitimate (you should be doing this anyway,
since opening an attachment from an untrusted source is the quickest way to having a virus problem) -
including don't open those e-cards from hallmark or whatever. You're just setting yourself up if you
do.
my 2 cents,

I agree with you on the emails that I have been receiving and feel that it is verry unappropriat for personal use of such organisation communication and something should be done about it since there is kids that get this info in there emails as well. I personnally thought that the utahspeedskating@yahoogroups.com was more for business and for all skatters to recieve info from the oval about up comming events, not for pornagraphy promotions! That should be stopped really quick from who ever is doing so!
