Hey everyone. I cannot believe how many people play kubb in the mid Atlantic states (does PA count?). The east coast is really a hotbed for kubb. Speaking of coasts, I would encourage people to check out the Seattlekubb website. www.seattlekubb.com. They are putting together a tournament for this next weekend. Let us all wish them luck. I think the kubbalution is happening all across the US. Here is a quick question for everyone. Where do most people get their sets? Your partner in the kubbalution.

I am in the same boat with both of you with buying from Old Time Games. I have been happy with the customer service, speed of delivery, and the products.

I have not seen a larger set. I am not sure where one could get that from, unless somebody made it by hand. It would be pretty cool to give it a try with ones that big for the fun of it and have them be oak. You would feel like a real Viking.

I will keep you all posted on plans an East Coast or some sort of regional tournment.  The location would probably be DC since it is such a nice tourist destination.

There is a chance that I can get a team together for WI in August.

Hello East Coasters!

Bill Dwinnells here.  We have a few Kubb players up here in the New England States.  I also know a few in New Jersey and New York.  I just started playing recently and am still learning the rules.  When and where were you thinking of a tournament?

Any other players on the east coast?

Tim, you are an animal. I am not sure what is better creating a mass of
people in one location that eat, drink and sleep kubb or lightly
spreading the kubb love in various places as one moves.

If you want to bounce any ideas off of me for a tournament in DC or on
the East Coast, just let me know. I have a couple of friends in DC that
know how to play and I could tell them about the tournament as well.

I was able to work out a deal with the Ramada Inn in downtown Eau
Claire yesterday for $64/night for the kubb championship/fundraiser.
You can get it for Friday and/or Saturday nights. They will release the

and then cancel. Their phone number is: 715-835-6121.

Hej srander1,

Thanks for getting back to me and asking about the kubb friendlies. These things have really just taken off. It is pretty crazy. A year ago, nobody in town knew about kubb and now we are getting over 50 people showing up and five games being played at one time on a spring Saturday. The next kubb friendly is going to be on May 3rd. Maybe we will get six games going at one time. Who knows. Actually, I would be happy with just getting half the people we got from this month.

I agree about the Holy Guacs. Perhaps they can make it for 2009 or 2010. Yes, this thing is only going to grow. I am going to have a special announcement real soon.
Thanks again srander1. Have a great day and happy kubbin!!

That kubb friendly sounds like it was an awesome day! Also it sounds
like the tournament is going to be bigger and better this year. It's
cool you are getting it all set up right now. The bigger space will
be a lot better in my opinion. We had a great time at the tournament
last year but unfortunately it doesn't look like we'll make it out
this year to defend our title. I hope you get a lot of pictures.

If this message reaches anyone that is even curious about
participating -- DO IT. It is a lot of fun. Eric puts in a lot of
work so that you can just enjoy a nice day playing a great game. All
skill levels will have fun, I promise you. And it's for some great
causes.

Looking forward to more news, and if we win the lottery soon we can
fly out again for the tournament!

Thanks Eric.

Another update on the U.S. Kubb Championship in Eau Claire. The two
non-profits are set in regards to where the money will go. This year,
all the money will go to Aid Darfur and the Eau Claire chapter of
Girls on the Run. I would encourage you to check out both of the
websites to learn about them, if you are interested. After speaking
with a person from USA for UNHCR, which runs Aid Darfur, 100% of the
money that is given to them goes to on the ground operations for
refugees from the Darfur, Sudan conflict. Every $100 that is raised
will put a survival kit, which includes necessities such as blankets
and a cooking & heating stove, into the hands of a refugee family
from Sudan's Darfur region. The money for Girls on the Run will go
towards scholarships and shoes for girls from low-income families in
Eau Claire County that want to join GOTR.

In addition, the location has been set. It is going to be located
just north of the farmers market in downtown Eau Claire. For those of
you that came last year, this is a different site. It will provide
more open area and will allow for more pitches going at one time. In
addition, if you have not experienced the farmers market in our small
town, you will be in for a treat. This year, the maximum number of
teams will be 32. So, close you eyes all you kubb fans and imagine
looking at 16 games going at one time. All teams will be guaranteed
five games. This will be a lot easier this year with having one
division. Food will be provided by GOTR and all the proceeds that
they make will go to them.

I am working on getting some music for the event and I am hoping a
four person bluegrass band can play for at least a couple hours.

I was contacted by a hotel downtown that is willing to give me
reduced rates again, so that information will be on the website soon.

I want to stress this point. Obviously, some teams will show up more
determined than others to walk away with the big oak trophies.
However, what I think the great thing about kubb is, is that it is a
great way to meet people and have an enjoyable day. What I am trying
to say is, please do not be intimidated if you are worried about your
skill level. This is going to be an amazing day, full of kubb, t-
shirts, music, food, and most importantly, raising money for two
organizations.

It is never too early to register. Remember, you pay at the event.

As always, you can read more at www.wisconsinkubb.com

Happy kubbing!
Eric

OK, so I took the idea of having kubb friendlies as a way to meet and
spread kubb, if you will. I decided to start having them quarterly,
but then a group on campus brought up the idea of having them the
first Saturday of every month. Here is a recap of last weekend.

I get to the park at 11:45. I take the grill and two of the kubb sets
out of the trunk. I start talking with a friend named Corey (studied
in Sweden for a semester, actually Växjö) who is a Foodlum. The sun
is out and it is pushing 60. I notice a young guy in the parking lot
across the street playing the banjo and I cannot help but think, man
that would be cool if he would come over and play some tunes during
this thing, not knowing how today was going to turn out for our April
kubb friendly. It was local food week on campus and the friendly was
the last event of the week. Next thing you know, it is a few minutes
before noon (it was planned from noon to 2pm) and a few more people
start showing up. I am thinking, wow, we might get 20 people here
today. Corey says to me that he has a surprise and pulls out a big
Swedish flag. I have to do a couple of things then I wrap some string
from the Grand Marquis around the flag and hang it up in the tree.
Next thing you know, music is being played and it is the banjo guy
and two of his buddies. Then a young lady shows up with some sort of
fiddle and they just start jamming under the tree. I am thinking,
what the heck is going on. A couple of friends show up from Chippewa
Falls and there is a line for the grill. We start the second grill.
At about 12:30, we have four games going, a bluegrass band playing, a
Swedish flag hanging from the tree, buffalo brats on the grill side
by side with some veggie burgers. Erin comes walking up with Maja and
Cecilia. Come to find out, a guy saw one of the band members playing
on campus yesterday and invited him to come on by, and he did. A
couple professors then come. A buddy says that he is going to set up
his game too. Now we have five games going at one time and probably
15 bikes along side the sidewalk. More people show up. At one time,
there must have been 50 people there. People playing kubb, kids
kicking soccer balls, people throwing the frisbee, and of course
people eating. I stopped in my tracks and thought to myself, wow,
this has really taken off. A guy from Just Local Food says that the
store really wants to keep up with kubb and they would like to sell
some sets if that is possible. People ask about it. I see our CSA
farmer who stopped by and was his oh shucks self. A wedding party
that was from the church a block away is taking pictures on the
pedestrian bridge. The bluegrass music is still going. The flag is
waving in the spring air. I am cleaning up and go and talk to a
couple of the band members, who played for a solid two hours with
only a small break. I said, hey if you are interested, I have a
tournament in August. If you want, feel free to come by. I can't pay
you, but you are more than welcome. They said that they are there.
What? Now I have a bluegrass band at the tournament. I get everything
packed up after Erin and Cecilia head back home with the stroller and
I am getting Maja in the car and our international host student
Allen. I look over and there is one more kubb game being played, by
six kids on a short field. I take Allen home, decide I need to head
back to JLF and get a couple of things. It is now getting close to 4.
The kids are still playing and there are still about 15 people in the
park. We get back in the car, make a couple of waves and head home to
Cecilia and Erin. Not a bad spring day in Eau Claire.

Yesterday morning it was about 20 degrees with a fresh inch of snow
on the ground. We got lucky with the weather, that is for sure. You
can check out some pictures of the April Kubb Friendly at:
http://www.wisconsinkubb.com/kubb_photoskubbfriendly.htm

Not sure if this will keep up, but with the summer coming up, I
cannot help but think that it is going to pick up steam. In addition,
a principal in one of the schools here wants me to introduce the game
to the students, and the downtown organization in town wants a kubb
demonstration at a summer event downtown and part of a new winter
carnival.

I am not sure where everyone lives, but I will be in Rockford over
June 14th at the Swedish Historical Society's Midsommar playing kubb
and in Fargo/Moorehead playing at a big Nordic event there the last
weekend in June. Maybe we can meet there if any of you live close.

I hope everyone is doing well and happy kubbing!
Eric

We will be having a winter kubb friendly here in Eau Claire on February
2nd from noon-2pm.

Also, the date for the U.S. Midwest Kubb Championship has been set as
August 02, 2008.

As always, you can get more information at the website
www.wisconsinkubb.com. This year, the event will have one division.
Teams that placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd last year will not be placed in the
same groups of four. Again, to limit confusion (and just because it is
good kubbing) world championship rules will apply. Teams will need to
consist of at least two players. It looks like I will be able to get
some discounted hotel rooms in town again. Feel free to contact me with
any questions.

Thanks, happy winter and happy kubbing.
Eric

The Berserkers will be hosting a Kubb Fall Friendly on November 17th
(11am-4pm)in Eau Claire across from Just Local Foods. The flyer will
hopefully be on www.wisconsinkubb.com sometime this weekend. The
Berserkers will start having kubb friendlies three times a year
(spring, fall, winter) in addition to having the annual U.S. Midwest
Kubb Championships in the summer. Come one. Come all.

Let's throw some lumber!!

Hej CJP!

First, welcome to the Yahoo Group! Glad that you are here. If you
have not, please feel welcome to browse through wisconsinkubb.com. I
like your site and you had me laughing pretty hard.

Interesting question. The "new line" is formed from the kubb closest
to the half-pitch line. However, I have thought it would be fun to
play that you have to throw from the actual spot of the kubb that is
closest to the half-pitch line.

Have a good day and happy kubbin'!

Kubb is ALIVE!!

I am thinking I did not answer the question. Nope, we did not rope
off the fields.

I went the day before with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and
marked off the pitches with string that I had cut previously. We then
spray painted the four corners, where the king goes, and the points
on the sidelines that were in line with the king. I then put the
stakes in the ground the day of the tournament. We were BIG TIME!!
(just kidding).

Greetings all!

New Kubb player here. I stumbled across the rules last week, my
friends and I made a set Saturday, and we just could not stop playing
all day, and into the night. We love it.:)

So in reading some of the various sets of rules around I came across a
possible loophole in language that I wondered how you all thought
should be interpreted.

In discussion of thrown field kubbs that are not knocked over during
the opponents turn, I've seen it said that the throwing line should be
moved up to be inline with the kubb closest to the king. Do you all
play this as closest to the KING, or closest to the half court line?

It is very possible for the kubb that is closest to the king to
actually be farther back than another field kubb - one that it is
right near the half-field line, but way over by the edge boundry, for
example.

Do you find /feel that this is meant to be played as written- closest
to the king, no matter which is farthest forward? Or is a poor choice
of words, and is intended to mean closest to midfield?

from the wikipedia summary: "If either team leaves field kubbs
standing, the kubb closest to the king now represents that side's
baseline, and throwers may step up to that line to throw at their
opponent's kubbs."

The "official rules" linked from vmkubb.com aren't very helpful in
this regard either. They are great at explaining the flow of the game,
and the example of play is great for getting a feel of the play, but
oddly enough, they don't really contain a formal set of rules. :)

In their example of play the situation above does not come up.

In panel 9, only one field kubb remains, so there is only one choice
of where to draw the line. Panel 13 is the same, with only one kubb
left in the field. And in panel 15, the farthest forward is also the
closest to the king, so it doesn't matter.

Anyway, it doesn't affect game play /too/ much, though it does offer
some strategic consideration when throwing one's kubbs into the
opponents field. We're not hard core rules lawyers or anything, and
generally just like drinking whiskey and throwing wood around in the
park, but I was curious if I was misreading this or not. It'd be nice
to know incase we ever want to play with other people, to know what to
expect from Kubbdom at large. :)

Also, howdy to SeattleKubb folks! We are also in Seattle, and perhaps
once we get our skills sharpened up, we will challenge you! :)

Lastly, our own slightly sillied up version of kubb we're putting on
our own site: http://www.zerothousand.net/zkubb.html

Still need to put pictures of our set up, and suggestions for
decorating etc. We are quickly becoming kubb evangelists. :)

Thanks so much. This is very helpful and gives us a good idea of
things to avoid. I like the early registration idea.

Did you try roping off the playing field?
