It is one thing whether or not Cheltenham should go ahead. It is entirely
another matter whether Irish citizens should travel to England, spend 3 days
in Gloucestershire, and return home en mass, thus jeopardising Ireland's
disease free status. What McCrirrick etc don't seem to realise is that 25%
of Ireland's total exports are in the agricultural sector, and a single case
of FMD in the state would spell disaster for the whole economy. I think the
trainers have taken a stand and we should support their decision which was
taken not lightly, but with the interest of the whole country at heart.
I for one will not be travelling over. Instead I will take 3 days off
work and enjoy the very best of English racing on the TV. Fair play to
anyone who took a big price about Geos, Hors La Loi III et al a few weeks
ago. Sure, it is a crying shame about Istabraq and the other Irish and
French runners, but that is a measure of how important it is to keep FMD out
of Ireland. I would hope any punters intending to travel over would bear
that in mind.
Well that's my tuppence worth. Incidentally, where were you going to be
staying?
