I am going to meet with Mark McCarrol tomorrow regarding class times and required paperwork for the club. I am hoping to have a Thursday night class at 6:00pm to 7:30 or 8pm. Other nights might be available with Kyle or senior student leads. Please discuss this on Saturday. Keeling Sensei, as to Saturday's first training, I will be out of town celebrating my anniversary. I look forward to training with everyone next Thursday night.
Thanks,
Josh

So, the first meeting with Keeling Sensei will be this Saturday (09/27) at 2:30. Location: East Field House Dance Studio. If you don't have a gi yet, no sweat. Just wear loose fitting comfortable clothing. (but nothing too loose that it will fall off of course)

Ok, I went up to the dance studio (first time I've driven in a while)
and checked out the "dibsing roster" (or whatever). Somebody had
reserved the room from 10:00-12:00. I was thinking of reserving the
room at 12:30, but I remember Alisa said that Mark said that the all
the rooms were reserved until 2:30pm. I didn't want to risk it writing
in an earlier time, thus I wrote down "Shotokan Karate Club -
2:30pm-4:00pm"
So, we're all settled for this Saturday. Dance room. Nice and big for
lots of recruits! (hopefully)
Alisa, I have contacted Mark McCarrol to set myself up as the volunteer to lead classes. We will need a UCSC student to lead the club. Any one that is interested in being the lead, I am not sure what it might require as of yet, please let me know. I hope to meet with Mark this week, secure the necessary documents, insurance requirements and class time. Alisa, please call me when you get a chance; I would like to know what you have discussed with Mark.
Nice to see everyone at OPERS and the sign up was successful.
Osu,
Josh

So, the plan is to have the First Meeting with Keeling be this Saturday at 2:30. As Alisa said, the rooms are available at 2:30.
Alisa, do you know which rooms are available? Do you know if we have to let Mark know which one we want, or can we just show up? If it's the former, can you be a dear and reserve the Dance Studio for 2:30 (or the earliest time available)? I think the first training will have the most attendance, so we'll want a big room.

Tori Valencia mentioned at the Fall Festival yesterday that
she has a size 4 heavyweight KI uniform available for a
VERY reasonable price (I believe less than half the $80
purchase price?). Of course if anyone want the highest
quality uniforms, please see the following website:
http://www.tokaidojapan.com/
I have set up a 10% discount for UCSC dojo members.
(FYI: I run international sales for Tokaido)
Just enter "UCSC" for the discount code. Of course
Tokaido products cost a lot. But if you have the money,
and are committed to your Karate training, they may
be worth the investment.
If anyone wants a relatively good quality uniform but
can't afford a Tokaido, please let me know your size
(or height & weight) ASAP and I can get one at a discount
for you and bring it down this Saturday. These are,
if I recall correctly, "Hayashi" brand. They are
usually about $65 retail and I can get them for you
for about $50-53. I have to go to the shop anyway this
Saturday morning to pick up uniforms for the 36 or
so kids I just started teaching.
Hope to see many of you this Saturday afternoon.
-Jon Keeling
So, the plan is to have the First Meeting with Keeling be this

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm thrilled to be starting again; I
really missed training.
More triumphant for my rolling partner, who flung me across the mat :p

Hey Jess,
-because I ripped mine spectacularly in jujitsu.
I sense a bit of triumph in the phrase! ;-)
Well, I assume you mean "good" as in heavyweight. Online, you can get
one from tokon.com.
Gi are also sold locally at Zen Cultural Centre, though I don't think
they carry heavyweight.
Glad to see you back!

Hey there Ekapol!
Thanks for the offer. I'll take a look and let you know.
To everybody else (including Ekapol of course), I finished writing up
the new, fleshed out text on the googlegroup and temporarily finished
the pictures (though I may replace a few with ekapol's). So, take a
look and let me know what you think.

Oh, final thing. I'm just gonna make a few changes to the googlegroup before sending out the invitations. A few things to take out. For starters, the class schedule which currently it says, "Somebody, please train with us!" and the most recent thread, "the UCSC Shotokan Karate Club will survive and eventually thrive!" That can't be encouraging to prospective members.
Plus, I'll add some training pictures to the front page. JonW, are you still waiting for your computer to boot up? ;-)

Hopefully I'll see you all soon,

Well, I think that went pretty darn good today. As Josh said, some
people walked up to the table and signed up without even asking
anything. So that's a plus. Who knows if doing kata a distance away
from the table did anything, but it sure didn't hurt. Who knows, the
breakdancers next to us might've brought in a few customers! I think
we just may stay alfoat. So yeah, go us!
Finally, I have to say, despite all the "oh, you should put on
sunscreen! You're getting so red!" No sunburn I got! (that splash of
sunscreen I put on 20 minutes before we left doesn't count) So . . .
yeah. FYI.

Greetings from Riverside!
My news since I left are:
I left Santa Cruz July 10, I drove to Riverside and decided to try the
karate here before flying back home July 13. On Saturday July 12 they
had sparring at 9am. It's interesting to mention that the group (at
least that day) was mostly women! It was pretty intense for me since
most of them go to competitions all the time. So I was sparring and I
twisted my ankle! I was in pain I continued sparring then I drove home
the pain started becoming worse and worse so at around 4pm I had someone
take me to the ER since I was not able to walk anymore. Guess what? I've
broken the 5th metatarsal of my left foot! It's called Jones Fracture
and because there is not enough blood supply it takes long time to heal.
I had a cast for 6weeks and there was no sign of healing. Three weeks
ago I've had an operation where they put me a screw and they believe
that it will speed the healing. I still need to be on a cast for at
least 3 more weeks!
I hope that I will be able to do some karate even though it seems a
little risky...maybe a new style non barefoot karate how does it sound??
I wish you all the best for the upcoming event!

I already asked Mark. We are too late to get a table and must bring our
own and set it up in an *unassigned area*, such as at the end of the row
where the martial arts tables are.
Also, as we have no assigned parking; we can get in early at the service
entrance to drive in and drop off the table, but there is parking at east
remote.

Final question about the flyers before I print 'em out. At the bottom
of the flyer, it says "For more information, call 831-224-3199". I
assume that's Jeremy's number. Do you want that on there? I could
change it to direct them to the googlegroup.
-But, today is a different time and I realize that not everyone is as
much of a fanatic as me...
Well, yes, that's true. However, this is still just the beginning.
When we get a solid core of students, we'll be able to safely set up
another day or two to increase our karate intake. If we all remember,
in the beginning, we're just gonna do one class to build up a solid
base of returning (hopefully) students. Then, when there's a
personal/social motivation, we can have more classes and those sucked
in to Shotokan won't be deterred by which day is better.
-Imagine if we could get just TWO % of the UCSC students.
Imagine if we could get just TWO UCSC students! ;-)
Oh yes, there's definitely potential.
-Aim high. Expect low.
Hell, I do that every time I spar! I aim to execute a jodan zuki, but
I end up running out of energy and it ends up being a gedan zuki. ;-)
(Yes, I need to train more often)

Josh & I spoke about this on the phone last week and we basically
agreed that the best strategy might be a weekday evening class
each week and additionally whenever a senior instructor
(eg Peck Sensei or me) can make it on a weekend, those
classes can be organized as extras, most likely on a
Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. So perhaps it would
turn out to be approximately 6 classes/month. Jeremy and
I used to train 15+ hours/week in Tokyo in the mid-1980's.
But, today is a different time and I realize that not
everyone is as much of a fanatic as me...
Update on my kids' classes. I taught nine 4th-6th graders
yesterday. I have 24 2nd-3rd graders signed up for
tomorrow. That is almost 20% of the student population
at this afterschool facility that are eligible (I'm not
accepting younger than 2nd grade, where apparently the
demand may have actually been even greater!). Imagine if
we could get just TWO % of the UCSC students. 30 students
would be about 0.2%. There is definitely some potential.
Aim high. Expect low. That's a lesson for life for you
youngsters reading this.
Just in case, my cell is 650-580-3696.
Thanks,
Jon Keeling
Oh *phhh*. Silly me, I didn't see it. I gotta stop looking into the sun.
-could someone take it up early for us...Abbot brothers?
Well, I don't know if the Abbot brothers can do it, but I know that we
Abbott brothers can definitely take it up!

I do have a table. I have a bunch of tables. However, could someone take it up early for us...Abbot brothers? I have to work on Tuesday and will not be able to leave before 3ish.

Hey Bronzed God,
Forget about our table. We need something of a normal height. Rereading Josh's message, it looks like he'll be supplying one. Problem solved.

Hey Bronzed God,
Forget about our table. We need something of a normal height.
Rereading Josh's message, it looks like he'll be supplying one.
Problem solved.

Alright. Great summary and info Josh.
Ok, I'll print out the fliers as they are. We'll also bring the medals
from that tourney, though if anybody else has medals they've won at
tourneys, perhaps they could add to the pot? . . . Daniel? JK,JP or
JM? Alisa? I'll see what training pics I have and make prints. Maybe
I'll use one from the Shinkyu beach training (hey, UCSC people were
there, right?). Some of those looked pretty good.
The fester is from 3:00-6:00. Perhaps we can get there half-hour early
to set up?
That brings up the unanswered question about the table. Since, from
what I've heard, we won't be given a table, I've thrown out the offer
for our table. However, since it's seiza height, if anybody has
something taller, that may be more . . . beneficial.
And yes, let's heed JonW's advice. For those of us who aren't bronzed
gods, please bring sunscreen. I, on the otherhand, will let the sun
scorch!
See you soon,
Kyle

I emailed Mark McCarroll about the room situation. Please read below. When we secure more than 8 student at OPERs (which we will) and we find a student to be the UCSC club president. I will take on a volunteer statues to secure workman's comp insurance and learn all the policies and procedures to run a club...In short, we are going to revive the club.
As for the days and hours, I am leaning towards a week night in a raquet ball court or Saturday afternoons. I will have to confer with my better half about Saturday afternoons.
We will find students to train this Tuesday. Keeling Sensei will come and teach as much as possible. I will find a student to take a lead rule in the club.
Yes, Kyle please print a hundred fliers for the club. We will not be able to know what the time for classes will be until we secure students.
Keeling Sensei is going to bring some shade, students and instruction. Kyle will bring the fliers, pictures, and melted medals. Luke will come. Alise will come. Mellisa will come. I will bring a table, books, and mucho club spirit.
See you all on Tuesday. By the way, does anyone know what time OPERS is going to be and for how long?
Osu,
Josh

Hi Josh First you have to establish the club for this coming year. Going to the Fall Festival will be a good start. Once you have at least eight students who are interested... which will probably be next week... Then we can meet and you would need to sign up as a volunteer so that you're covered by workman's comp and you can so that you can get into the East Field House... Also this club needs a student to run it. And... you need to know all the policies and procedures to run a club... Also liability comes into play. So that's the start. Mark

I think that that the opinion of whoever is the most qualified to lead the weekday classes should be given the most weight. At this point, that may be the Abbott brothers. But there is a chance that someone else might come along that has a shodan from elsewhere, or Josh may be available(?) ...
As for the weekends, I could only make it on Saturday afternoons or Sundays. That would be once or twice each month, depending on my schedule. It has been suggested that these weekend classes might occur just on the days I (or another black belt) can make it.
It is nice having a larger room. But I was actually brought up training in racquetball courts for the first 3 years of
my training (going back to 1982, before some of you were born...). We often had more than a dozen people in class and it didn't seem like it was such a tight squeeze. I think that the day and time is most important.

YahooGroup alone. All we need is 1/5 of that #. I am sure that we can get plenty of names from the fall festival. The question is How many would actually sign the liability waiver? I suggest having copies of that waiver at the festival. It can't hurt...
BTW, I just taught my first 4-6 graders' class today. I will be teaching 2-3 graders on Friday. I am not allowing in those below 2nd grade, or else I would have had twice as many people sign up. Sure, these little kids are different than university students. But if I can get 30 people out of 350 to attend my classes, I would think that out of 15,000+ at UCSC, enough to form the club should be within the realm of possibilities. ..

Being that this is a university club, the responsible person must be a student of faculty, at least officially.. .Someone not directly connected to the university can fill in forms, coordinate things with OPERS, teach... But there must be club officers who "officially" make the decisions. These officers can be decided on after we get a list together. Who knows...Someone may actually WANT to be "in charge" of the club...
Please keep practicing your kata in preparation for the demonstrations. I should be able to be there just a little early to help set up. I may not be able to stay to the end, because I need to
deal with getting my kids to my house for the night. But I'll be there until as late as I can manage. I can bring the Abbotts' old canopy thing to put over the table (Josh is bringing one, I believe). I will try to bring a few other things as well. It will be fun.
Gotta run. Please keep spreading the word about the club to anyone you know at UCSC. Thanks, Jon Keeling
please remember- in almost all past years the festival starts out warm, gets
hot, and then the fog rolls in and it gets cold. sunscreen canopy jacket. and
hamster.

Ok, keeping your answer in mind, it still begs the question, in your
opinion, you, who have lead classes for years at UCSC, Later sat,
later-week early-week. Which do you think will have better turnout and
attendance?
-I could only make it on Saturday afternoons or Sundays
Since, in the beginning, we're just gonna have one class per week, it
would seem that Sat afternoon would be the best day. However, it *is*
Saturday afternoon. Do you think students be sober that late in the
weekend?

I think that that the opinion of whoever is the most qualified to
lead the weekday classes should be given the most weight. At this
point, that may be the Abbott brothers. But there is a chance

It is nice having a larger room. But I was actually brought up
training in racquetball courts for the first 3 years of my
training (going back to 1982, before some of you were born...).
We often had more than a dozen people in class and it didn't
seem like it was such a tight squeeze. I think that the day
