Local Shotokan Instructors & Students:
I just wanted to make this one final announcement to remind you
that March 3 is the deadline for the discounted rates on seminars.
If you can get your check in within the next couple days, I can
offer you the discounted rates. But you must reply by email
BY MARCH 3 with names of participants and # of sessions to attend
to secure the lower rates. No need to decide in advance exactly
which sessions you will attend. And you can always pay at the
door for additional sessions once you see for yourself what
an amazing opportunity these seminars are.
I have been having some great conversations with some of the other
instructors recently. The history of Sensei's Cruz, Friederich,
Yabe and Ubl are amazing. And of course other very highly-regarded
instructors will teaching as well. This is going to be one of
the highlights of Shotokan training anywhere, ever. I urge you
to take full advantage of this event taking place so close to
you.
Please consider who is planning to attend, not as event instructors:
*We have a senior black belt coming from the UK to participate.
*We may have someone planning to come who competed against some
of the top JKA instructors in the World Championships in the
early 1970's.
*We have several people who have themselves trained in Japan for
anywhere from a few months to several years flying in from
various locations across the US.
Please note as well that this event is endorsed by some of the
seniormost Shotokan instructors in the world who have lived in
Japan and had wanted to join us but could not due primarily to
scheduling conflicts. Regardless of rank and years-in
experience (which in itself is impressive) the collective
knowledge of the instructors at this event is truly beyond compare.
Those of you who have already taken advantage of the Hoitsugan
Seminars I event here in 2004 and/or past individual seminars I
have arranged including those with Senseis Yabe, Ubl, Amos,
Berger and more, know that every effort should be made to
attend as many sessions as possible.
If you are an instructor, it goes without question that you
are going to attend this event.
If you are a student, please discuss with your instructor(s)
which sessions seem like they might be most beneficial for you.
Please note that the fees for these sessions is DRASTICALLY
less than you should expect to pay normally for access to
such instructors, as they are all paying their own expenses
for this event and not requiring their usual minimum fees.
And also please note that sessions 15 and 41 by Hoopes Sensei
are open to non-martial artists as well, as his focus in these
sessions is primarily on stretching, breathing, etc. If
there are parents bringing their kids to this event, they
may want to consider attending these sessions themselves.
Please note: I am sending this email out to only a limited
number of people. So please forward this information to your
dojo and anyone else you know who might be interested. I
am sure that they will be happy you did. I do not want to
hear dozens of people again this time tell me they would have
loved to attend this event if they had known about it in
advance...
Please see below and the website for additional information
and let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Jon Keeling

Please note that the deadline for the seminar prepayment
discount has been extended to March 3. If you are a
full-time student, you can take advantage of a triple
discount if you send in your payment now for 4 or more
sessions. The best deal, though, is signing up for the
entire event. Imagine training with so many instructors
who have devoted so much time and effort into living
and training at the source in Japan, in up to 30
different seminars. There really is nothing else to
compare to the Hoitsugan Seminars...

Every serious Shotokan practitioner within driving distance
should be at this event and many are flying in from as far
as several thousand miles away to attend this. Please do
not miss this amazing opportunity.
Please forward this information on to all who may be
interested in taking advantage of what is surely going to
be one of the best Shotokan training opportunities
anywhere, ever.
And please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Thank you,

and please pass it on.

someone, and i won't mention kyle's name, said
something about just getting the info when others come
back from the hoitsugan seminars. with all respect
for the people who go and bring the info home to the
others, it is a little like the game where you pass
info from one person to the next (no, not spin the
bottle). something gets lost along the way. i know i
don't always remember, or get, all of what jon keeling
teaches so you guys do not even hear it at all.
also when you hear something from a different
instructor it can bring on a whole meaning to you
about something that you just did not get from someone
else's explanation, or even know there was something
to "get".
i am not selling the seminars. they really are
a way to share a tradition and the money goes to pay
for the transportation and lodging of the instructors,
not profit. if you are interested in carrying on a
tradition and heightening your awareness of karate, go
to at least part of the seminars. aloha, jon w

Please note that this Saturday we will start our kata
cycle again, starting with Heian Shodan. Each kata
follows a 4-session progression, each session taking
place Saturdays from 8am. Kumite sessions follows that.
session 1- introduction
session 2- more technical detail
session 3- application study
session 4- review and variations
Dojo info: http://www.jkasv.com/
Also, please make sure to post your payment for the
Hoitsugan Seminars ASAP. I will extend the prepayment
deadline until the middle of next week. No need to
decide on specific sessions right away.

Believe me, I have been working on that... Rubik's cube is
child's play compared to organizing this event.

That is your best plan. You could just send in your check for,
for example, 8 sessions over the course of 2 days. Then you
can go to whichever ones you want after you figure it out.
Don't forget that you get a student discount if you are a
full-time student.
Thanks,
Jon
Is it possible you could post some more information about the seminars?
At best I can come for one day because the time frame is very close to my
paper deadline.
Just general categories like kihon, kata(s), bunkai, kumite would help.!

Got your check, Gloria.
For students with some time in your schedules
during the day on Thurs/Fri, please consider
coming to sessions in the morning/afternoon
to take advantage of the very low student/teacher
ratio during those times. The weekend should be
pretty packed. And don't forget that there is a
student discount.
Thanks,
Jon Keeling
Hello,
I've sent the check yesterday.
Thank you

"The ULTIMATE Shotokan Karate training opportunity!"
Would you like to go to Japan to train at Shotokan's source?
Don't speak Japanese? Too expensive and time-consuming?
If you could roll together the best of training in Japan over the past
50 years and have it described, explained and demonstrated to you in
English, how interested would you be in that?
For the third time, a total of over a dozen instructors, all of whom
lived and trained in Japan, will come together to teach as a collective
unit. This event will involve 15 to 20 instructors teaching a total of
47 seminars over a 5-day period. Many of these instructors trained
directly with Nakayama Sensei prior to his passing in 1987. Most lived
in Japan for many years and have gained experiences that may be
invaluable to your own training. The Hoitsugan Seminars have set a new
standard of excellence. This event is a must for all those serious
about improving their ability in and understanding of Shotokan.
Some of our Elite Instructors Include:
Richard Amos • Michael Berger • Vincent Cruz • Gary Friederich •
Aaron Hoopes • Steve Ubl • James Yabe

watch/ train? whatever you do, this will open your
eyes to karate you probably never even thought of.
during one of the hoitsugan seminars he used me for a
demonstration and it was not until the third time that
students asked him to repeat what he had just done
that i could count how many times in a row that he hit
me (it was 5) in a space that someone typically might
do a block and counter. jonw

Hello everyone,
I am going to to ubl sensei's training.
Please let me know if you need a ride, Alisa is coming with me and I can
only have one more person (not enough seat belts....). This means that
on Saturday I won't be there for training.
Sunday training??? of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A $5 donation is suggested from those there to watch.
Believe me when I say that watching a class taught by Ubl Sensei
is both very exhilarating and very frustrating. Actually, being in
the class is as well... Watching, you would definitely feel
the excitement and see the educational value of his teaching.
But you will feel frustrated for not being in the middle of
the action, participating in the class. (If you are in the class,
you may feel a little frustrated seeing that a person can actually
do what he explains we should be doing, but unable to do it
well yourself)
In case you didn't already pick up on this from Willson Sensei and
myself already, this is the guy to train with. Remember Takahashi
Sensei, who used to show up to teach when almost nobody else
came to class at UCSC? Well he was nothing compared to Ubl Sensei.
I have trained with almost all the most highly-ranked and
highly-regarded Shotokan instructors on the planet and can tell
you that ALL OF THEM could learn something from this man.
There are people who would be more than happy to pay $200 for a
class with him. And I have been offered $10,000 for the videotape
of the class that he taught one evening during the Hoitsugan
Seminars in 2004 where several of us who had spent many years
living and training in Japan declared that the best class we
had ever had, anywhere.
Too late to plan the trip up this weekend? You will get more
chances to train with him at the Hoitsugan Seminars in March.
But please be forewarned that those classes will be much less
personal than these this weekend, as there will be many more
people at the event in March.
Hope to see many of you from Santa Cruz at the seminars this
weekend. And if you know others doing Shotokan elsewhere, please
let them know about the Hoitsugan Seminars now, particularly
if they may need time to arrange the trip from elsewhere.
How many people would be interested in me coming down to teach
this coming Sunday? It may be the last chance before my
2nd hip surgery...

Does anyone know if visitors can watch ubl sensei's training this weekend? I am unable to train, but would love to be in the dojo watching.

sorry- ubl sensei- in redwood city, jkasv dojo
carpool. go both days. at least one. at least! i train with ubl
sensei every week. i
never leave without being amazed. jonw
steve ubl sensei will be instructing jan. 18, 7-9 pm and jan 19, 8-10 am.
i have said this before, but steve ubl causes you to have epiphanies- those
"A-HA"
moments when you realize something really important that changes your life.
something
that either was not clear to you, or maybe you had never even thought of.
as you train you know that there is a more advanced place you are trying to
get to. it is
apparent when you watch highly evolved karate-ka practicing. it is like a door
to a room
that you get a glimpse of on occasion, and you really want to look inside.
steve ubl opens
that door and invites you in.
today, 3/4 of the way through the class with sensei ubl i wanted to leave
BECAUSE i had
received so much amazing information in the previous hour that i just wanted to
go work
on it, BUT no way would i leave because i knew there was more invaluable info
coming in
the rest of the training and i did not want to miss anything.
steve ubl probably knows more about shotokan karate than almost anyone else
in the
world, not by a small degree but by a lot. AND he has the ability to transfer
that
knowledge clearly to you and can help you produce an obvious leap in your
karate
training at every level.
Please see the last 2 files here:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/UCSCShotokan/files/
Note the safety gear requirements and that the cost is
$25 no matter how many events you enter. There is no
team kumite. But I hope UCSC can get at least one team
for kata. Please post a note to the group if you are
interested in being on the team and/or doing extra
training for the tournament.
Also note that this is INVITATION-ONLY. Apparently, some
people were trying to register who were not invited. So
the organizers are being very strict about this. JKA of
Silicon Valley is on the invitation list. I asked the
organizers for the OK for UCSC to also be allowed to enter
and they agreed. Anyone interested in competing, please
send me an email so I can be sure to clear you if the
organizers contact me to ask if I know you.
The last tournament in the area (South San Francisco, at
the end of August) had 200 competitors. This Oct tournament
will not be even half that size. And it's much closer to
Santa Cruz. And the next good local tournament that you
could attend probably won't be until at least April, if
not later. So this may be a good chance for you to get
out there and try a relatively small, friendly competion.
Good luck with your training.

Hey, wait just a darned minute! Why are we still using this yahoo group?! These things we are talking about here is exactly what we should be doing . . . on the google group! The google group is supposed to replace the Yahoo group. Anyone who wants to get the latest information, news, schedule things and happenin's in relation to our club, sign up now to the UCSC Shotokan Karate Club google group because very soon, the Yahoo group will be removed (well... not confirmed yet but it will!). It's very easy, you just put your email in the box below and you're subscribed!
Ooh, unfortunately, I won't be able to make it tonight (Tues) but
hopefully Thurs and Sat I'll be able to come.
Y'all have a good training!

Hi All,
Mondays: According to the recreation dept. website we have the multipurpose room
on
Mondays from 6:7:30. But based on limited experience with room scheduling I'm
not
convinced that some other group wont show up at that time saying they have it.
I'll try to
get a more definite confirmation from the Rec. dept. But assume we have the
room for
tomorrow onward for the quarter.
Tuesdays: We have the Mulitpurpose room reserved for 6:00-7:30 starting this
coming
Tuesday. This evening will be reserved for self-training.
Googlegroup: Kyle created a googlegroup. This is a nicer version of the yahoo
group and if
you haven't joined please go to: http://groups.google.com/group/ucsc-shotokan-
karate-club We will begin to use this new group for discussion threads.
Website: Alissa is working on updating/upgrading the UCSC Club site.
Club Promotion: I can get fliers copied through the Recreation Dept. office. I
propose
spending some time after next Saturday's class to put some up around the campus
(shuttle
stops, etc.).
Dues: We are collecting club dues $30 per quarter. Online payment for UCSC
students will
available starting Oct. 2 at 9am via
http://www.ucscrecreation.com/catalog/?offering=698

Yes! You can park for free! Even at the small parking lot outside the
dojo. Bear in mind though not to park at the parking meters.
