steve ubl sensei will be instructing jan. 18, 7-9 pm and jan 19, 8-10 am.
i have said this before, but steve ubl causes you to have epiphanies- those
"A-HA"
moments when you realize something really important that changes your life.
something
that either was not clear to you, or maybe you had never even thought of.
as you train you know that there is a more advanced place you are trying to
get to. it is
apparent when you watch highly evolved karate-ka practicing. it is like a door
to a room
that you get a glimpse of on occasion, and you really want to look inside.
steve ubl opens
that door and invites you in.
today, 3/4 of the way through the class with sensei ubl i wanted to leave
BECAUSE i had
received so much amazing information in the previous hour that i just wanted to
go work
on it, BUT no way would i leave because i knew there was more invaluable info
coming in
the rest of the training and i did not want to miss anything.
steve ubl probably knows more about shotokan karate than almost anyone else
in the
world, not by a small degree but by a lot. AND he has the ability to transfer
that
knowledge clearly to you and can help you produce an obvious leap in your
karate
training at every level.
Please see the last 2 files here:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/UCSCShotokan/files/
Note the safety gear requirements and that the cost is
$25 no matter how many events you enter. There is no
team kumite. But I hope UCSC can get at least one team
for kata. Please post a note to the group if you are
interested in being on the team and/or doing extra
training for the tournament.
Also note that this is INVITATION-ONLY. Apparently, some
people were trying to register who were not invited. So
the organizers are being very strict about this. JKA of
Silicon Valley is on the invitation list. I asked the
organizers for the OK for UCSC to also be allowed to enter
and they agreed. Anyone interested in competing, please
send me an email so I can be sure to clear you if the
organizers contact me to ask if I know you.
The last tournament in the area (South San Francisco, at
the end of August) had 200 competitors. This Oct tournament
will not be even half that size. And it's much closer to
Santa Cruz. And the next good local tournament that you
could attend probably won't be until at least April, if
not later. So this may be a good chance for you to get
out there and try a relatively small, friendly competion.
Good luck with your training.

Hey, wait just a darned minute! Why are we still using this yahoo group?! These things we are talking about here is exactly what we should be doing . . . on the google group! The google group is supposed to replace the Yahoo group. Anyone who wants to get the latest information, news, schedule things and happenin's in relation to our club, sign up now to the UCSC Shotokan Karate Club google group because very soon, the Yahoo group will be removed (well... not confirmed yet but it will!). It's very easy, you just put your email in the box below and you're subscribed!
Ooh, unfortunately, I won't be able to make it tonight (Tues) but
hopefully Thurs and Sat I'll be able to come.
Y'all have a good training!

Hi All,
Mondays: According to the recreation dept. website we have the multipurpose room
on
Mondays from 6:7:30. But based on limited experience with room scheduling I'm
not
convinced that some other group wont show up at that time saying they have it.
I'll try to
get a more definite confirmation from the Rec. dept. But assume we have the
room for
tomorrow onward for the quarter.
Tuesdays: We have the Mulitpurpose room reserved for 6:00-7:30 starting this
coming
Tuesday. This evening will be reserved for self-training.
Googlegroup: Kyle created a googlegroup. This is a nicer version of the yahoo
group and if
you haven't joined please go to: http://groups.google.com/group/ucsc-shotokan-
karate-club We will begin to use this new group for discussion threads.
Website: Alissa is working on updating/upgrading the UCSC Club site.
Club Promotion: I can get fliers copied through the Recreation Dept. office. I
propose
spending some time after next Saturday's class to put some up around the campus
(shuttle
stops, etc.).
Dues: We are collecting club dues $30 per quarter. Online payment for UCSC
students will
available starting Oct. 2 at 9am via
http://www.ucscrecreation.com/catalog/?offering=698

Yes! You can park for free! Even at the small parking lot outside the
dojo. Bear in mind though not to park at the parking meters.

No promises. But I may try to make it for this. I finish teaching
class in Redwood City at 10am. Can I park in a lot closeby
cheap/free? I don't want to have to spend 90 minutes getting a day-
pass, like I did on Tuesday (I know that was extreme)...Is the East
Remote the best option? Is that free on Saturdays?

$30/quarter is a great deal for what you are getting. My monthly
dues are $85 and considered CHEAP by local standards. Many dojo
with <5hrs/week of classes charge over $100/mo and there are many
places with FAR less talented/experienced instructors that charge
much more. Please make sure to make your payments early in the
quarter to get it out of the way so you don't have to think about it
later.
Does everyone have plenty of copies of the dojo flyer? Please help
post them at all the shuttle stops and coffee shops around campus.
And please keep spreading word about your AWESOME dojo to your
friends. If you have a dojo Tshirt, please wear it. If you don't
have one, please consider ordering through cafepress.
For anyone interested in competing at the tournament at West Valley
College (this is the closest one to UCSC) Oct 28, I will be getting
some registration forms for that next week and plan to forward to
you after I get them. Although tournament competition should not be
considered the primary goal in training, it can be a fun way to test
your progress, motivate yourself to train more/harder, and to see
what you have to look forward to as you progress further (by
watching the advanced rounds). Hopefully you can get at least one 3-
person team together for the team events, in addition to the
individual events.
Here's an article about tournaments I wrote several years ago:
http://www.jkasv.com/articles/articlesmain_files/archive-43.html
Most of all, enjoy your training. Although you may be able to
impress people with your improved phizique (TM), highly-tuned sense
of awareness and cool party tricks, the most important benefit of
karate training, at least in my opinion, is that it makes us feel
good while doing something that is good for us.
Train hard. Train smart. But most importantly...get to the dojo and
keep training. This year is going to be even bigger and better than
ever!
Good luck in the new quarter. I hope to see you all soon.

Hi All,
We will have our first official fall qtr training in the multi-purpose room this
Sat 11:00am-
1:00pm.
Please note, we will be accepting $30 per quarter for dues now and will put the
money
(less gas expenses for me to drive from Monterey to Santa Cruz) in a club
account through
the rec. dept. This money will be available for various undetermined club
expenses
(clinics, equipment, etc.).
I have created a Facebook group page for the Club. You might need to have your
own
account to access the group page so check into it (it's free). I am hoping that
this format
will slowly replace the yahoo group in terms of notifications. Facebook is a
good way to
reach college students and to promote the Club. See link below. Right now the
group is in
an "open" status meaning that anyone can join however this may change if I start
seeing a
bunch of non-club members joining the group. This means currently you don't need
to be
approved to join.

As for Mondays: I'm still working with Mark to get a room but currently it seems
that all
main rooms have been taken by other clubs (see Jon Wilson's previous post about
how
increased enrollment at UCSC is affecting things recreation club-wise).
I went ahead and reserved the Multipurpose room for Tuesday evenings
(6:30-8:00). If I
am unable to attend this evening I will advise you.
Also, I have created a gmail email account (uscskarate@...) I can be
reached
though this email address as well.

Hint: Jeremy Peck's facebook profile shows an awesome photo of himself and
Jon Keeling working out at Cabrillo many years ago.
I am so glad to see how things go in Santa Cruz, and how everyone are
doing their best to help the club develop further - I wish I could be
there with you! I am finally settling from all the moving and traveling
and am getting back to (Karate) class this week. Will tell you how that
goes. Eager to.
Greetings and best wishes to all of you!
Kai
the schedule at ucsc is increasingly difficult to
confirm as the student population and demand grows.the
plan was to get the dance room monday eves, activity
thurs eves. somehow that did not work, so we deal with
the cards we get. we have used the tracquetball
courtsbefore, and keep an eye out for any room that
can be signed up for on the paper schedule in the
room. it is a pain, but it is also free. persevere.
for the karate people who have not met sensei jeremy
peck-
jeremy peck and john keeling were my first
real instructors in santa cruz. they trained together
for years in tokyo with the jka, then came home and
took first place in every tournament in northern
california they entered. jeremy has taught at ucsc
and cabrillo previously, as well as at the ISKF on the
east coast. he is a great instructor, will make you
work hard and correctly. you have a great gift here.
if he says 'this is the way to do it', he knows. if
it is different from anything i taught, do it his way.
jeremy really knows what he is doing.
aloha, jonw
The 4.00-5:30 works better for me than the later one. :-)

I hope you are doing well. I would like to see if we can secure the 6:30 time slot on Monday because 4:30 will be too early for me to make on a regular basis. I am going to try and make as many classes as possible this quarter, but I have to keep a balance with work, family life (ie new baby) and karate. I will make as many Thursday and Saturday classes as possible. I will see you this afternoon and we can talk more. Is there anything I need to bring for OPERS today? My work phone # is 831-466-1370 or 831-566-4839. Please call me if you need to.
Until later,

Hi all,
I'm still working with the Rec. Dept. on finalizing the training schedule for
the Fall Qtr.
Seems that the Monday times slot was not firmed up and for whatever reason we
can only
use the Activity Room from 4:00-5:30. Josh, my understanding is that you can
lead
Monday classes? If so, does this time work for you? It may be too early for you?
Let me
know either way. There is a possibility we can use the Dance Studio from
6:30-8:00pm.
Thur: 6:30-8:00pm (Dance Studio)
Sat: 11-1:00pm (Multi-Purpose Room).
See you tomorrow.

Hello,
Unfortunately I am coming to Santa Cruz on Tuesday at around 6:00pm. I
am sure that the festival will be great and as a result many people will
enroll! I'll see you all at the training on Thursday.
Greetings from Greece
Gloria
Monday is fine for me too!

Kyle,
Ok. Will get together on Monday. Do you have a phone number for Alisa? If so,
can you
call her to tell we've postponed until Monday? I'd appreciate it. I'm worried
she won't check
her email in the next 2 hours.
Perhaps we can shoot for 1pm on Monday? Let me know what time wont work for you.
Thanks.

Alisa and Kyle,
You two seem to be the only two who can make it tomorrow. However, considering
the
issue with move-in day and parking issues I'm wondering if should try to meet
Monday
during the day sometime instead? Would this work for either of you and/or
others? Being
that's after 10pm right now neither of you may get this email before the
morning?? My
fear is driving over there from Monterey to have it be a stresser. I will be
over there
anyway on Monday so that's why I suggested that.
Let me know. My number 831-224-3199. Feel free to call or email me.

Josh,
Good to hear from you. I will be able to teach class next Thu. I understand
that you will
be able to teach on Mondays? That's great.
As for the festival, looks like things are coming together.

How great it is to see everyone pitching in to make the club's OPERS opportunity a success! Sensei Peck, I will not be able to make it tomorrow morning. However, I will be attending the OPERS event. From what I read in the emails it sounds like you guys got it all done. Fliers, tent, tables...Is there anything I can do or bring? I just talked with Sensei Jon W. about starting class on Thursday. Is this going to be possible for you? I look forward to training with you and everyone again soon.
Sincerely,
Josh Martin

All:
The Festival is from 3-6pm. We will have a table, however, I just heard back from Cori of the recreation dept. and we are NOT slated for a formal demonstration as previously indicated. However, we can still do a demonstration on the East Field being the stage.
The Festival is next Tuesday. Are people available to come to UCSC this coming Saturday (day after tomorrow) at 11am for demo prep? I can make it up there as long as other people will be there as the drive from Monterey a little far if no one attends. Please let me know.
As for literature (fliers, banners, etc.):
Flier: I have a flier I've created for teaching gigs I've done over on this side of the Peninsula. I can tweak and print out some. HOWEVER, the logo is the Shotokan Tiger without mention of
UCSC. Kyle - if the logo you created for the T-Shirts is readily email- able to me, I can use that one instead. If so, please email it to me at jfpeck@sbcglobal.net
Banner: Sensei Wilson is sending me the banner that the club has been using (canvas) and I should receive it by tomorrow.
Tent: Jon W. mentioned to me that a tent thing has been used in the past which sadly is is down in SD with him. I think this is a great thing to have for 1) sun protection 2) brings attention to our table. Does anyone else have one of these contraptions?
As for Fall Quarter Training schedule:
Mon: 5:45pm to 7 (ish) (Note: This is a change from the original message sent by Jon W. He spoke to Mark from the Rec. Dept. yesterday regarding this change).
Thu: 6-7pm.
Sat: 11-1pm. (Note: Currently Sunday cannot be accommodated per the UCSC Rec. Dept.) and this schedule remains more
feasible for my current schedule).
I will be able to make it to either the Thur or Saturday classes (or both).
Recap on action needed: 1. Training this coming saturday for demo prep (11am-1ish) 2. UCSC Karate Club logo to be incorporated into Flier - Kyle? 3. Tent contraption for table/booth 4. Pictures etc. If you have and want to bring perhaps do so on Saturday so we can figure out to best display.

something special you might like us to work on for the demo? I thought I remembered there being a banner that we could hang on the table, yes/no? I can bring pen/paper, but I don't have pictures that are UCSC Club specific. Kyle??? I can work on the flier if you tell me what you would like to have on them, i.e. logo, pictures, catchy verbs, class times, instructor notes/info.... However, I will have to use a PC to print them because I don't have any spare $$$ to have them printed by a pro.
