Damon, in no way was I questioning YOUR integrity as a scorekeeper...the
Baton Rouge box scores where always impeccable. Some of the other cities,
however...

I'm apalled at the insinuation I can't do my job as scorekeeper (JJ) -
I actually voted for the league to be better at turning in stats.

Also, I'm wondering if the Tennessee franchise will go by the old
Clarksville Coyotes name. Tennessee was orginalling going to go by
the name Tomahawks but the former owner was trying to hold the team
for ransom.

Norb Ecksl told me it would be the last week in September (no dates
specified) and probably in Fort Worth. I don't know if it's open to
the media or public.

Ramone Linares, on loan to the San Angelo Colts, was shelled by the
Greenville Bluesmen in his first start for the Colts. He lastd 2.2
innings, gave up 6 hits, 7 runs (all earned, walked 3, and struckout
3. He also served up 3 HR's. However, he got no decision and the
Colts won the game 17-10 (real pitchers' duel, ey?).

Glad to hear that it's Ozark that is independently owned. They would make sense
and fit in perfectly with Tennessee and Paducah coming in.Would make a road trip
up that way more reasonable. Plus my grandparents live in Harrison Ark. which is
about 20-25 minutes from Branson and about an hour away from the
Springfield/Ozark ballpark.

As far as Charlie goes, he is who I heard about the 3 TLL teams coming aboard
from ( by way of Dave Nitz).

BTW, we host Albany starting 2night. Hoping for the largest crowd of the year as
we have Skip Bertman throwing out the first pitch. Oh, how nice it would be to
have 1,000 people in the stands.

Getting that camera out is something I need to do more often. But as seeing I'm
the official scorer and play the music I dont have a chance to really get out of
the press box except before the game. And even then I usually have to be back up
top at least a half hour before the game.

If I remember correctly you got to meet Jeremy, the PA guy. Buddy of mine, but
hew has very limited baseball knowledge. The big joke most of the season has
been that he doesn't/didn't know who Ernie Banks was.

we would be playing ya'll. Would've been a much more interesting
series. With Dave Nitz (radio) and Lydia Bergeron (GM) having worked
with Charlie in Shreveport.

Also wanted to throw out a few things I've heard/read. The San Angelo
group also owns Greenville and intends to move them for next season
(TLL), possibly Lubbock (read this in the Amarillo paper). I'm still
trying to confirm the 3rd independently owned team in the league
because the sports editor in Amarillo never responded.

There was talk circulating that the independently owned teams in the
TLL were not happy with the league administration and were
considering the possibility of joining the AAAPBC.

Also heard that if the AAA and TLL merged that Tyler might be out
because of fan/citizen sentiment towards the TLL. Is it really that
bad there (dislike of the TLL I mean)?

Baton Rouge was hampered by a lack of advertising this season as most
money went into ballpark renovations, but from what I've heard in the
community there are several people who would like to help support if
given the chance. Our owner is a great guy, but has little
understanding of what it takes to run a successful (at the gate)
baseball franchise. He is, however, committed to making this thing
work.

I think that the league, as a whole, will be stronger and draw better
next season with a full year and offseason under its belt.

Just wondering your thoughts.

Oh no! We have a dreaded Blue Marlins fan amongst us! (Smile)
Welcome aboard Damon. I think most of us were looking forward to a
BR-TYL championship series. Maybe next year.

I had an e-mail conversation with Charlie Chitwood yesterday. He
denies any current plans for league mergers. He did indicate that
there were rumors of some Tex-La teams bolting the league. But he
consigned it to grapevine chatter.

I talked on the phone to Norb Ecksl (AAA President) yesterday as well.
We didn't discuss league mergers or team transfers but he did say
there will be exciting news coming out of the September league
meeting. He would not elaborate.

As far as what is available for "pubication", Ecksl said there are two
groups of investors who will ensure that the Tennessee franchise stays
in Tennessee (although he didn't indicate where). Two new franchises
are already on board for 2002: Texarkana and Paducah KY. Two more
have made deposits but are still looking for locations: Dallas and
southern Oklahoma (considering two different unnamed cities).

So, even without teams joining from Tex-La, we're looking at an 8-10
team league in 2002. Adding two Tex-La teams would be great (my guess
would be San Angelo and Ozark (Springfield AR).

BTW, I've invited GM Charlie Chitwood and David McClendon to join the
group. Thus far they haven't responded. However, Blu Monday
(Community Relations and Promotions) is a member so maybe she'll share
group postings with them and they'll be inspired to at least join to
read the discussions.

I'm not real familiar with Tyler citizenry's attitudes toward the
Tex-La. I know there are hard feelings against the former Tyler
Wildcatters/Lafayette Bayou Bullfrogs/Edinburg Roadrunners franchise.
They allegedly left Tyler owing a lot of debt. I think the bigger
issue would be the organization of the Tex-La (league ownership of
some franchises and players). That's incompatible with the AAA's
structure. I tend to think we're more likely to see the independently
owned Tex-La teams joining the AAA.

As far as criticisms of this first season, I'm in favor of cutting
some slack. Baseball America said the AAA was premature in starting
up this year. Certainly the lack of preparation showed all season
long. But a season of "ad hoc" baseball was better than none at all.
Next season, however, they better get their collective acts together.
They've got a whole off-season to start running this railroad like it
had an engineer. They won't be able to fall back on "we got a late
start." That was an acceptable excuse in 2001. It won't be in 2002.

Whew,,, that was wordy.

Hello Damon,

The TLL's 3rd independently owned team is the Springfield/Ozark Mountain
Ducks.

To avoid confusion it should be stated from the outset that the Tyler
Roughnecks Hot Stove League is not affiliated with nor an entity of
the Tyler Roughnecks Baseball Club. Although there may be members who
are officials or players with the Roughnecks, the comments posted here
should not be construed as the official position or policy of the
Roughnecks unless an identified Roughnecks official so states.

That said, I would like to introduce you to some of the capabilities
of this group -- especially if you are new to this.

Besides the obvious posting of messages there are a number of other
functions.

You can upload files to the group's archive. Just click on the files
category in the sidebar and follow the instructions.

You can add bookmarks of related websites. Again, just click on the
bookmarks category in the sidebar and follow the instructions.

You can upload photos and add events to the calendar.

And you can create and take polls of members. This might be of value
to Roughnecks personnel in terms of getting feedback on ideas.
However, anyone can take a poll of members.

So, visit the various sections and feel free to contribute in anyway
you deem appropriate.

The idea of a merger with the TLL crossed my mind as well. From what
I understand, the fact that San Angelo is one of the few TLL teams
that are independently owned has something to do with it. That does
not explain Stephen Brown going to the league-owned Amarillo Dillas,
however.

This DOES make for good discussion fodder...this should be a VERY
interesting off-season. Thank goodness for THE TYLER ROUGHNECKS HOT
STOVE LEAGUE!!!

If it can be confirmed that Kirkpatrick, Linares, Turrentine, Boker
and Brown are "on loan" to Texas-Louisiana League teams the stove just
heated up with a topic for discussion.

Is it possible that something larger is in the works? Two possible
scenarios:

1. A merger of the AAA and Tex-La.
2. Fort Worth and Tyler leave the AAA to join the Tex-La.

The loaning of players to a "rival" league at the very least is some
kind of overture and establishment of friendly relations. But to what
end?

Personally, I would be highly in favor of FW and the 'Necks joining
the Tex-La. I think there would be far more fan interest in opponents
from Amarillo, San Angelo, etc. than Albany GA and Winchester TN.

Also, doesn't the Tex-La consist of an odd number of teams? With
Greenville probably going under there would be room for FW and Tyler
to expand the Tex-La to eight.

Then there's the question of the viability of the AAA market. Only FW
and Montgomery drew worth spit. How long can one franchise travel to
another and play before 200-350 fans? Tex-La attendance is much
better. Plus there would be more Texas media interest.

Anyway, I hope that stirs the pot and we get some chit-chat going.

once something is scheduled on my day off!

Thanks to Marvin for sharing.

BTW, if anyone has information like this, PLEASE post it to the group.

This discussion group is only a few days old but I hope we'll be able
to increase the number of subscribers and contributions in the next
few weeks.

I've invited several people from the Tyler Roughnecks organization to
join the group: Charlie Chitwood (General Manager), David McClendon
(Media), and Pamela "Blu" Monday (Promotions). I hope they'll join,
participate, and listen to the pulse of the fans.

The 2001 season was fun but it was also flawed by the quick start and
lack of pre-season groundwork. We, as fans and members of the
Roughnecks ballclub, have an opportunity to make 2002 much more
successful by sharing with each other.

So, PLEASE, invite as many people as you know to join this group.
Let's make sure the Roughnecks don't get forgotten over the
off-season.

I hope the Roughnecks are back next season. If the citizens of the
Tyler area would rather drive either 100 or 300 miles to see Major
league baseball, then they really missed a treat right here in their
backyard. It was a hell of a ride!
THANKS ROUGHNECKS FOR A FABULOUS SEASON
Now that you have gotten out from under the Wildcatters shadow maybe
the attendance will improve next season. You have several months to
promote, package, and prepare for 2002.
