We are definitely interested in developing a Western Divison and Tyler would fit into that plan. I will keep you posted and I encourage you to begin putting togeather a working advisory committee. The charge for the group would be to create a positive attitude in the community about making baseball work over the long term. A five year game plan should be developed and presented to officials in such a way that they would have have no doubt in their minds that the group will succeed. Political figures like to be on the winning side and will gradually buy in once the advisory group shows committment. Its taken four years in Baton Rouge but the effort is paying off and the pressure is now on political officials to contribute.
Please make the effort a fun venture that is well thought out and one that is not too demanding for one person. Its been fun in Baton Rouge to see the program develop from scratch to where its at today.
When the advisory group feels confident that the community will buy in to support the team, I will be glad to visit and help from the league side. At that time the group or a potential owner would apply for Southeast League membership by turning in a "Letter of Intent" and the required deposit ($5,000). This would activate a process where the league would help to develop the territory and help locate investors for ownership.
I've never been able to figure out how to get there. I just communicate by
e-mail, too. Explain to him that, in order to enjoy baseball, we actually
have to work for a living. We don't just sit at our computers "chatting" all
day. In fact, I've never even been to a chat room. The closest I ever get is
when two or three of us are checking our e-mails at the same time and we
keep answering each other. But, I'm afraid he may be right about not much
interest.
As for Smoaky, I think he might "block" my calls, because I do get rather
upset about his attitude about minor league ball.

Hey group, just received this from the guys starting the Southwest League.
***Bob said he has been on the Tyler Baseball Link and thinks either there is no interest in baseball there or people won't chat when he's on. Any ideas on that one?*** I'm guessing that he is talking about the chatroom on our Yahoo group. Does anyone ever go there? It is not a link on my yahoo page so I have no way of going there unless you can give me a web address. I just always communicate by email, and I know everyone is not on their computer at the same times or some don't check their emails that frequently.
I'm thinking he might have better luck getting some feedback at www.smoaky.com on his baseball forum. Bob, David Smoak has a SportsTalk radio show every day at 4:00 on KTBB and sometimes it gets very opinionated and lively. Bill Coates would be another good sports commentator to talk to. They both worked very closely with our baseball teams here.
And I apologize for "dropping the ball" on the Nov. 30 @ MCF thing. I kept thinking that Bob or Kim would notify the group and I got busy working a BBQ concession over in Canton. So Brent and whoever showed up, I apologize.

Cheetahs hire Maddock, Beck for manager and pitching coach
respectively
CRESTWOOD, IL - The Cook County Cheetahs have announced the hirings
of Steve Maddock as its new field manager and Greg Beck as its
pitching coach for the 2004 Frontier League season.
Maddock spent the last two seasons as field manager and Director of
Player Procurement for the San Angelo Colts of the Central Baseball
League. The Arlington, Texas resident led the Colts to the league
championship in 2002 and was named the All-Star manager the following
season. Six of his players with San Angelo went to sign contracts
with Major League Baseball organizations.
Before his two seasons at San Angelo, Maddock was the field manager
and Director of Player Procurement in 2001 for the Tyler Roughnecks
of the All-American Association. He led the Roughnecks to the
playoffs in his lone season and had two players signed by MLB
organizations. Maddock was also a minor league pitcher playing in six
professional leagues from 1993-99, including the Frontier League.
Maddock is hoping the Cheetah fans will be extremely entertained by
his philosophy.
"The first thing we have to do is develop a strong pitching staff and
then build a fundamentally sound defense around it," Maddock
said. "Offensively, we're going to be aggressive team, run a lot and
manufacture runs with our team speed."
Beck was originally hired by Cheetahs as a pitching coach in 2002 and
in late 2003 was appointed interim manager after the release of
skipper Mike Moore. Beck, who played in the Milwaukee Brewers farm
system for seven seasons starting in 1994, is happy to be back with
the Cheetahs.
"My family and I love it up there," Beck said. "I believe we have a
very good ball club for next year and with the talent we have, we
will compete for the Frontier League championship. "
Cheetahs' president Kevin Rhomberg believes Maddock and Beck will be
a key ingredients to the club's success in 2004.
"We feel we have a manager and pitching coach who are proven winners
and who will win here at Cook County," Rhomberg said. "They both have
a great knowledge of the Frontier League and its opponents and I'm
very excited to have both of them added to our coaching staff this
season.
We have been running behind on our city tour. We were delayed in Dodge City
and Wichita this week.
My understanding is that Kim Karabatsos had informed Blu Monday that we we
not be in Tyler this week.
We will have the NBC league in 2004 focused in the west. In 2005 we will have
an east and west to the SWL.
Kim or I will be in touch about our arrival in Tyler.

I read on the Southwestern League Web Site that the league will
operate as a collegiateleague in 2004.........perhaps they decided
to focus on the 2004 season & delayed the trip to Tyler.

I will say I've heard some rumors about the Aces suffering due to
attendance and maybe only 8 teams in the CBL for 2004. League
meetings are next month so we'll know more by December and scheduling
time.
Darla
www.cblforums.com
It was now my understanding the Aces ownership by TIB was the move to
Shreveport. The actual Aces franchise is owned by local ownership
and that was a loan/purchase guaranteed by the league of the Colts
former franchise rights out of Greenville in 2001. That shake down
was never public knowledge but I think it came down to Bell owned the
Aces and opted to move to Shreveport. The Aces franchise was then
turned into the Greenville Bluesmen (former TX/La league owned by
Colts group). so Bell only owns the Sports, Cats and Sens for now.
And the Aviators are located in Robstown, only near Corpus. I don't
foresee them moving that team because of the new ballpark that was
built. Doubt the CBL would have seen fit to invest in the Avs future
knowing the Ryan families intentions, and those weren't secret by any
means. The coastal area is big enough to support it all. Hell there
are tons of sports in the area; hockey teams in Corpus, Houston,
Laredo. CBL baseball in Harlingen (albeit suffering), Edinburg and
talk of Brownsville or Laredo. I don't think the Avs are going
anywhere. sorry guys

The very basic problem is that Texas Independent Baseball owns the
Central League territorial rights to Tyler. Does any one believe the
ignominious owner of the Fort Worth Cats, Shreveport Sports, Alexandria
Aces, and Jackson Senators will approve the transfer of the Coastal Bend
Aviators to Tyler without a substantial financial consideration for his
territorial rights? If you believe that, he'll also sell you a used car.

It does look as if the Coastal Bend Aviators will have to relocate. And since Tyler has a decent fan base, hopefully the Aviators' owners will move them there when Round Rock moves to Corpus Christi.
Also regarding the Central Baseball League: does anybody know what the Alexandria Aces' owners are planning to do with the team? I kind of have a personal interest in the team and their city as I was stationed with the Air Force in Alexandria during the tail end of the Vietnam War (and my father was stationed there in World War II). I’d love to see a team make good there in that city.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your group.
As you well may know, I have been working hard to develop ownership groups in
several towns.
We have not issued a press release but will soon to the effect that our
target date for opening day is May/June 2005. With so much work ahead in each
market, finding minority ownership, sponsorship and ballpark improvements, we
must
provide for ample time to sustain the goal.
We have interest in the following markets:
Buckeye, AZ, high school park to get 500K in upgrades. It will be 2200 seat
park.
Bisbee-Douglas-Sierra Vista, AZ, Current ownership group to working toward
sales now.
Farmington, NM, Individual looking strongly at town.
Las Cruces, Individual looking strongly at town.
Plainview, Texas, Group wishing to meet with us. We meet with them this
Wednesday.
Dodge City, Kansas, the Cananea club looks promising to move there. We must
hit a sales target with intents.
Bartlesville, OK, must have baseball. Meeting there in several weeks.
We are scheduled to be in Tyler Thursday October 30, 9 AM.

Baseball be thy game.
Thy kingdom come.
World Series won.
On earth as it is in the Cask N' Flagon.
Give us this day.

And lead us not into depression.
But deliver us from the curse.

I thought the Wildcatters were in the TLL from 1994-97 before it
became the CBL in 2002. The Roughnecks were in the All American
Association in 2001, only year I recall. The Rouchneck team
ownership (TIB) moved their franchise to Jackson of the CBL. Texas
Louisiana League didn't "merge" with another league, it just took on
another name to better fit the geographics with teams in Mississippi
and Missouri.
Check out Brent's homepage for all the Tyler baseball history. Very
helpful info. I know rumors abound that Rio Grane Valley will be
moving in 2004, or shut its doors all together. Could be down to 8
teams in the CBL for 2004.
Another kicker ~~ The San Angelo ownership group sold their rights
to the Greenville Bluesman franchise (bought in 2001) to the
Alexandria ownership. Aces are to be paying out the cost and the
league guaranteed the note. So now we have the Aces low attendance
jeopardizing their return in 2004 and on top of that they have the
extra franchise fee burden. We'll see how 2004 shakes out come
January; the CBL could look allot different.

The Roughnecks were in the Texas Louisiana League. That league did
not merge with any other league, but is now called the Central
Baseball League. There was also the Southeastern Baseball League,
which is still around, but barely. There was a team in Tyler for a
year or two in the early 2000's.
I agree, Tyler is a larger city than Dodge City, and is not in the
middle of nowhere like Dodge City. A look at a map of northeastern
Texas will show several cities, such a s Longview and Marshall, in
short driving range of Tyler. This has the makings of a decent fan
base.
Hi Jody,
Welcome to the group.
It's WildCatters......
I was front office staff with both teams and I have not a clue. Mickey
Smith, the PA announcer with the WildCatters and I were the only local
people on staff. There were a couple more on the Roughnecks staff, but I
wasn't privy to any insider information.
Maybe Brent or Tom has a theory.
Blu
Hi all,
I'm new to the group, but not new to Tyler minor league baseball. I
went to many, many Wildcatter and Roughneck games.
This Southwest League looks pretty promising. Tyler is way bigger than
Dodge City, so our attendance projections should look much more
appealing.
Somebody please refresh my memory....The Wildcatters belonged to the
Texas-Louisiana League and they shipped our franchise off to Lafayette
after the best season attendance wise and performance wise. What was up
with that?? Then the Roughnecks came to town with what league?? That
league merged with the TX/LA League and again they promptly shipped our
team to another city. Why did we join a league that didn't believe in
Tyler's potential??
Let me get this streight....neither the Wildcatters or Roughneck
franchises were locally owned? Seems if a new team was locally owned
people around here would take minor league ball more seriously.
Lastly.....any chances of a strictly Texas league starting up and being
successful? Tyler, Texarkana, Waco, San Angelo, Wichita Falls, etc.
I'd go to the games!

If this league considers e-mails from a few fans a "group"...........
If we are going to raise money for an ownership group, I say we should go
