Byron Pierce and John Bryant have gone public in their attempt to form a new
independent baseball league. The first team in the new league will be the
Rio Valley WhiteWings, playing in Harlingen, Texas; if that name is
familiar, it's because the WhiteWings formerly played in the Central
Baseball League and the Texas-Louisiana League, which Pierce and Bryant
founded in 1994. The duo say they'll announce the other seven teams in the
league as well as the league name in upcoming weeks. One thing that will
differentiate the new league from other independent leagues: it will
emphasize veteran players, with only two rookies allowed on each team.
(Whether this makes a difference to fans remains to be seen.) Like the
original Texas-Louisiana League and the Golden Baseball League, operations
will be centralized: GMs will manage the business side, but the managers
will be hired by the league and be in charge of personnel.
