And I just thought I was the only one who wasn't keen on Maddock's
management style. And what can be elaborated on regarding Colts'
clubhouse problems? I did an interview with Maddock when he was
managing the Tyler Roughnecks in 2001. At the time DH Nolan Lane was
reported to be a problem and he was abruptly released. Maddock would
not speak on the record regarding Lane at the time. Suffice it to say
that there was a clash between Maddock and Lane which transcended
personalities and encompassed Lane's lack of respect for Maddock's
judgment as a Manager.
You're also dead-on about pitching. The Roughnecks ERA was also
atrocious and a team which billed itself as a developing ground for
young pitchers never developed one single young talent. The only
pitchers with success were proven veterans (one with Major League
experience).
Of course, most of us Roughnecks fans look back through rose-colored
glasses with nostalgia for a fun season. We enjoyed Maddog's fiery
personality. But the bottom line was a record barely over .500 after
and despite of all the roster manipulation.
