TrackChasers:

The Northeast Enduro Series has a race scheduled for the new paved road
course at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ for September 25,
only if the new track is finished by then.  The operators just recently got the
go-ahead to start working on the new track.  Check neets.net for updates.

Yes I also agree with Will ... that`s why I never counted that Noth Bay track in
the first place... In my opinion, for a track to count, at least one complete
race should be seen, ( regardless of whether you are actually in side or outside
the property )

Who will be the next person to reach 1000 tracks?  There are currently three
TrackChasers over 900 (and under 1000); Allan, Gordy, and Andy.  Using their
last three year new track totals to get an average, here is where they will be
at the end of this year.

   would then be bumped from the standings but his list would remain on the
   site. Europeans currently need at least 105 tracks to be added.

Gordy,

     Orange County is running all week with the mini sprints at the beginning
of the week and the USA sprints Thursday and Friday (13th & 14th).  Don't
know how long you will be down.  Will , Pat and I are all heading for Citrus
County on the 7th.  See you there.

I have been to 26 different ice races.  The four worst were the four where I
saw the CNYIRA run.  If you thought they were better than you expected, by all
means try an AMEC show (or better yet a short track oval show).  Just about
the entire ice racing world is more entertaining than the CNYIRA guys.

the Auburn Country Club?  Are you taking up golf?  I
hope you make it to Peoria Speedway.  This is the
track in my hometown and still rates in the top 10 for
competitive racing.  The USMTS series should be
fantastic on that track.  How serious is your schedule
on the site?  Can you designate which tracks are
"new"?

I went to the new web site and looked around. I noticed that he has that AMP
road course in Phoenix listed. When I was in the town for the Early Thaw
Speedweek, there were newspaper articles that the city was going to close that
track down because they had lied about the kind of events that they would be
having when they got the permission to build it. Didn't pay a lot of attention
since I haven't even been to most California road courses, much less one in
Arizona.

This topic has caught my interest... regarding  one track I`ve never counted,
but wondering if I could...

For a number of years I was on a "dedicated run" in one of my trucking jobs....
Every 2 weeks on a  Sunday , I would pass the North Bay Speedway (Ontario) on
HWY 17 , the Trans Canada Highway.
There never looked like enough room in the lot to park my  22 wheeler "big rig"
, so I  never actually went in side the place to see the racing, although by
driving at a crawl, and briefly stopping on the shoulder, I regularly saw the
cars going round.
Can I count this ?

What do you think ???   opinions please..

Wait a minute- a dirt oval guy at an ice race? Yep that's right.
This past weekend I decided to hit my first ice race.  I checked the
web for the week or so before the race and planned on going to the
AMEC race in eastern NY, but then a last minute schedule change and
a check of the CNYIRA website found a race at Cayuta Lake, which is
2 hours closer to home, so that would be my destination.  The
website said they start racing around 11am, and a friday afternoon
call to one of the club members revealed that the races don't
usually get over until 4 or 430, so I decided to arrive around 1.  I
made the 3 hour drive on Superbowl Sunday to the lake, which sits
about 15 miles northeast of Watkins Glen.  I arrived and parked on
the snow covered access road to the boat launch.  They had all the
cars pitted on land, unlike most of the ice tracks I had read
about.  It was a balmy 26 degrees at race time. (what was the
temperature in San Clemente Randy?)  I walked out onto the lake
where they had a L shaped road course polowed into the surface of
the lake.  There was a small turnout of cars, and it turns out I
arrived in time to watch the final practice of the day.  (So much
for the 11am start as it was 115 when I got there).  Immediately
after practice they ran the first race of the day, a heat for the 5
Race Stud tire cars which were present.  I spoke with a female
driver who ran the other class, and managed to watch from the
infield of the track near the scoring truck.  The race was nothing
special, although I did like the fact that you could see the entire
course from 1 spot, and the fact that the cars broadslide in the
corners.  I actually preferred the ice racing to traditional road
races which I have seen.  I also watched the next heat, for the
remaining 7 cars which were in the street tire class. Each of the 2
heats had a pass for the lead.  After the second heat I walked back
to the car to warm up, and then saw all the cars leaving the lake
and pulling over to their trailers. It seems my decision on how long
to stay was made for me as the club director cancelled the rest of
the race due to dangerous ice conditions.  It turns out there were a
few large holes developing in the turns and they could no longer
race.  Oh well!  I also found it interesting that they ran counter-
clockwise on saturday, and clockwise on sunday on the same course.
There was also a group of motorcycle flat track racers racing
several hundred feet away on the same lake, running on an oval they
plowed out.  Overall I found the club unorganized, but the racing
was better than I expected.  I have a feeling they may not run at
Cayuta Lake again though as most of the guys were complaining that
it was too far from Syracuse and didn't like the track.  I got home
just in time to catch all of the Bowl, and look forward to maybe

Your talk of a short distance double brought back memories of a Super Bowl
Sunday several years ago. At the Willow Springs road course in Southern
California, they a dirt oval track at the east end of the facility with very
primitive
grandstands. For several seasons, the road course ran full size stock cars on
the road course under Toyota Sponsorship and these were actually outstanding
events. The dirt track is now only used for a vintage car event on
Thanksgiving weekend, but was pretty active for a couple winters. On this
particular
Super Bowl Sunday, both were operating at the same time. Don Low and I attended
the road course race, but the oval track event had very few entries and they
decided to run off the whole show in less than 90 minutes. By situating
ourselves
at the highest point of the road course, we watched the entire dirt track
show through the binoculars. Because I had covered nearly all the previous dirt
track events, we recognized all the cars racing and I did stories on both races
from the one viewing location.

Orange County Speedway.

Another short, unaffiliated double would be when the Nazareth National dirt
mile ran under Lindy Vicari's RSCA banner on a sweltering summer afternoon
in 1983 and then the adjacent Jerry Fried promoted Nazareth 1/2 mile ran
their regular Sunday night program.

could do last year was a 141 mile triple.  I'm not
sure anyone can beat my "shortest" double at two
tracks which have no affiliation.  I saw Yakima
Speedway and the Central Washington State Fairgrounds
both race in Yakima, Washington on a Friday night.
These two tracks are within a block or two of each
other.  When you sit in the grandstands of either
track you can see the other.  During a long caution
period at one track you can go to the other, catch a
heat race and be back before the tow trucks have
cleared the track.

UNITED STATES GEOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY AWARD WINNER

I am pleased to announce that the winner of the United
States Geographic Diversity Award is Allan Brown.
Congratulations, Allan.  It was a close finish and the
other trackchaser podium winners were within one point
of Allan.  Congrats to Gordy and Rick for their second
and third place finishes.

The USGDA is designed to recognize the trackchasers
who have not only seen racing in several states but
have seen enough races in a state to rank among the
trackchasing leaders in that state.

Allan's award total was 6.88 points.  His point total
was the average of his rank in all 50 states and the
District of Columbia.  Players received one point if
they ranked first in a state, two points if they
ranked second in a state, etc.  Trackchasers who were
not ranked in a state's top 10 received 15 points for
that particular state.  Results are available via an
Excel spreadsheet for anyone interested in seeing the
details.

Allan ranked in the top 10 in 36 locations.  Gordy led
all trackchasers by ranking in the top 10 in 43
places.  Allan's march to the USGDA was secured by his
depth of penetration in the 36 areas where he was a
leading trackchaser.  Rick ranked third in number of
top 10s with 34.

Leading a particular state in track's attended was not
a major factor in winning this award.  Allan led (or
shared the lead) in only five areas and Gordy did not
lead anywhere.  Both Guy Smith and John Moore led in
10 locations.  There were several states (AZ, CA, IN,
NE, NV and NM) where no one in the top 20 trackchasers
ranked #1.  Gary Jacob was the most prolific
non-ranked chaser.  He led Arizona, California and
Nevada.  Paul Weidman was the lowest ranking (16th) to
garner an individual state first place.  He did it at
New Hampshire and Vermont.

Evening gang,

Guy and I had a good weekend of ice racing in Québec.

We left very early Saturday morning and headed straight to Shawinigan Sud.
The Grand Prix de Shawinigan is an annual 2 weekend affair for snowmobiles
on the St-Mauricie River but they also have car racing on one of the
weekends. In the past they ran the oval track stockers that race weekly
around a small island in Lac Morin at Mont Carmel. This year, however, the
FAQ group sanctioned sports car action on a 1.4 km. ice course.

After the ticket seller forgot to take our money (admission was $10. CAN) we
drove down onto the river and parked in the pits, but for viewing we walked
back up and along the sidewalk in town for a great view of the entire
course.

We arrived during the lunch break. There was a large, well heated tent on
the river with seating, concessions and music. At 1 o'clock they went into
the second 15 minute heat for the 14 car field in the Sport category,
followed by an 8 car, combined Supersport/Open heat. At 2:00 they lined up
for the 4 car Novice final, scheduled for 20 minutes but checkered after 15,
probably because only 2 cars were running at the end. Then 11 Sport cars
answering the call and their 20 minute final checkered just past 3 o'clock.
With the Supersport/Open final remaining we were well satisfied and headed
for the Days Inn at West Three Rivers. It was certainly cold, perhaps low
teens, but surely warmer than the previous week would have been.

Interesting TrackChaser numbers were achieved at Shawinigan. For Guy it was
track number 888 and for me number 555!

By 4 o'clock we were settling into our room with over 19 hours to kill until
headed out for Sunday's destination of Stadiaume St-Guillaume. I had finally
added the track to my list in 2001 on my 6th attempt, while this would be
Guy's 4th time at the track, trying to see a race there. Very interesting is
the fact that St-Guillaume ran off and on for a number of years as a dirt
oval, but since 2001 it has been a grass track. Not only that, each winter
the surface is completely frozen for weekly ice racing. Gordy got the track
as dirt, I got it as grass and now Guy got it as frozen, yet it all counts
as just one track for TrackChasing purposes.

We arrived at the 1/3 mile oval with the trademark wooden, covered
grandstand, in plenty of time to join the racers in the heated
bar/restaurant underneath. They also held the driver's meeting there before
everyone returned to the cold, piercing wind for some stock car racing.
Admission was $8. CAN.

Many tracks in Canada run 2 heats and a feature for each car. St-Guillaume
has a unique twist in their weekly ice racing show with one heat and 2
features for each car! There are 3 classes, which include 8 cylinder stocks,
front wheel drives over 100 inches and front wheel drives under 100 inches.
They started 8, 7 and 23 cars respectively. It was neat that all 23 cars in
the under 100 class ran together in their heat, since the three heats were
enough time for us to spend in that freezing wind. We got to see all the
cars run within less than 45 minutes and with Guy collecting his 889th track
we were on our way back home.

Just 4 and a half days after returning from Québec I shall be flying to
Florida for my first ever February vacation. Arriving on the 6th and flying
home on the 15th, I have lots of tracks lined up and I look forward to
seeing a number of other TrackChasers down there. Gordy, thanks for
mentioning that Thunder Cross is not running the mini sprints on Friday, as
that was where I was planning to go on my first night. That cuts my
potential new track score back to 9 or possibly 10, still a good number for
a 9 day trip. It sounds like Citrus County on the 7th could be the biggest
gathering of TrackChasers.

Greetings, all, from now sunny Florida. Saturday morning, Suz and I headed
northeast from our Sarasota base to Daytona International Speedway for the Rolex
24 Hours race. I should've hit Daytona experts, the Eckels for advice ahead
of time. With all the "attractions" and such that have been added since my last
visit in the early 80's, there is now no parking right behind the main
stands. The one sign that said "race parking" directed you to the tunnel to the
infield. It wasn't my intention of going in there, but since I'd never viewed
any
action from there on previous visits, I figured why not. It was $40 per person
and $15 per car to enter. The track website had a $15 general admission
posted that no one seemed to know anything about. There were approximately 50
people at the entrance to guide you through 4 lines toward the tunnel. Once
inside,
you were on your own, as no one with a parking vest on had any clue as to
where you should go to park. They would just tell you where you couldn't park.
It
was a 25 minute search until I parked the nose of my father-in-laws car under
the nose of Dale Jr.'s souvenir trailer. We found a perch atop a section of
bleachers that allowed us to view all but the outer oval from the middle of
turn 3 to the point where they entered the infield, and one small part of the
inner portion. The cars are nice to look at, and there were more of them than in
the recent past, but it doesn't take long until they are widely spread out in
this huge venue. There were 4 lead changes under green while we were there,
but we saw none of them. Ninety minutes into the race the sky was taking a turn
for the worse, so we headed for the exit and East Bay where the final night of
the 360 sprints was rained out. I'll be back and forth between East Bay and
Volusia the next 4 nights. Friday I hope to finally get the dirt track at
Orange County since they moved races scheduled for minisprints at Thunder Cross
to
there. Saturday will find me at Citrus County unless Orange County rains out
Friday necessitating a return. Hope to cross paths with a few of you this week.

Hi All,
I think it was P.J. who suggested that I stay up north and do some ice
racing and so it is that I have done just that for 2 weeks. My manager
suggested some long trips to the wet southlands but I found a better
plan. Jack said that to alleviate some of my unpaid commission balance
I could work it off with some new tracks for him. On Saturday at the
Fox Lake ice races there was some talk of a new Sunday location and
after some questionning I found that they ran last week at Beaver
Springs on Lake Beaver Dam just east of Randolph, WI. So here is my
chance to pay some debts and add a new track just 43 miles from home!
Most of the cars were ones that run on Saturday at Fox Lake and
although the organization is new they drew 7 rear wheel drive and 8
front wheel drive cars for today's Super Bowl special. They ran a heat
for each class and they inverted the cars from the heat finish to start
the feature. This produced good racing in each class and featured some
close action as Kelly Brown beat a closing Mike Manke in the rear wheel
division and a cluster of 5 cars had very close finish in the front
wheel division. And I am home before that football game even starts! So
there it is , by luck of some overheard consverations another track in
the books and now I think I will have to head to warm weather.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I do not consider myself  for Randy's
new honor. Yes, it's true I've seen over 2,000 tracks, of which only 59 are
in Canada, and all of the rest are in the U.S. I've never been off of the
continent to see races or to visit tracks, and I'm sorry if I disappoint
anyone, but have no desire to either.

A couple of years ago we were to go on a 19 day trip of Europe, but thank's
to 9-11 that trip has been put on hold indefinately. Anyway we had no races
scheduled for that trip, and if we do try Europe again we might go to one
track at the most.

Someday I will retire, and when I do, my traveling days will come to an end.
I doubt if I'll go to more than a couple of dozen races a year, once I put
the directory to rest for the final time.
