Hi All,
Last week was the 42nd Western World at USA Raceway Park and featured just
2 classes (winged and non-winged) ASCS sprints on the well prepared
3/8-mile dirt oval. Racing got underway on time each night and while there
were some spectacular crashes there was lots of good racing each night. In
the non winged races Jerry Coons won easily the first night and Brady
Bacon did the same on Friday but Bacon got the jump at the start on
Saturday and grabbed the inside in front of Coons. Coons tried the outside
but gave up second to Robert Ballou and then broke. Tim Crawley used the
inside to take third while Ballou ran the cushion and Dave Darland came
from 17th to take 5th after finding the cushion fastest late in the race.
Sammy Swindell and Tim Kaeding took the preliminary night's winged
features. Kaeding took the Saturday night lead first on the outside but
Swindell got by when Kaeding slipped. Kaeding got back and led for a lap
late in the 30 lapper but Swindell made the middle of the track work after
it became black later in the race.

I will head for Orlando Friday and look for Roland and stay in Florida for
karts on Saturday at Callahan Speedway.

Hi All,
Saturday was the second day of our western trip and would include a stop
at the Houston Motorsports Park 3/8-mile paved (combined asphalt and
concrete) oval in Houston Texas. We arrived as they were finishing the
heats for the 8 classes (8 Bandoleros, 16 Eco stocks, 12 Naskarts, 6
limited mods, 9 Pro stocks, 12 Modifieds, 10 pro trucks and 13 late
models). The track is high banked and has a large grandstand of 22
concrete steps built on the hillside with aluminum seats that have backs
on every other row. Near the top we spotted Bruce and Pat Eckel who had
saved two seats for us late arrivals. The track has concrete walls and big
wheel fencing and they have excellent lights and good speakers with good
visibility from all the seats. After an intermission the features got
started with Kyle Curtis taking the 15 lap Bandolero feature from the pole
in a non-stop race. The Eco stocks raced hard for 15 laps with some paint
exchanged and one crash into the wall and one spin for the two cautions as
Roberto Compean came from 4th to win. The Naskarts ran a 27-lap feature
with just the competition yellow at half-way for a slowdown and after
running in close formation it was 6th starter Travis Roberts who took the
trophy. The limited mods went 20 laps all green and Quentin Epler got
under Marcus Berndt for a last lap victory. The pro stocks had 2 yellows
in their 25-lap feature and pole sitter J T Schild took the checkers. The
modifieds looked like a demo derby with a first lap pile up eliminating
three cars and then two cars hooking together and hitting the wall on the
14th lap to send both on the wreckers and needing a lengthy cleanup of oil
and water. Pole sitter Michael Umsheid led the four remaining cars to
complete the 40 laps and took the win. Jim Albert started 6th and won the
30-lap truck feature that was only slowed once. The 50-lap late model
feature was slowed by three spins as the front row starters ran close with
Brandon Bendele getting by pole sitter Joe Aramendia for the win. The
racing was done before 11PM and we were headed out toward Arizona.

Of interest to Track Chasers may be this bit of news fro the site mentioned
below:

"Plans call for a completely new and bigger track to be built outside of the
oval being used."

I'm not sure of the rules here, but if they build a completely new track that is
completely outside of the old track (i.e. not touching or using any part
thereof), does this mean they would count as separate tracks? If so, this
weekend may be one of the few chances to get the existing track.

that the Walkill  Slingshot Club will be holding an event on Black Friday for
anyone that still  has their car together and wants to race. The Nov 8th
event had 14 cars show up  and the race program was done by 4. They are
planning on getting things underway  with hot laps at 1 and the program to
follow.
If anyone is interested please  call Tommy at 845-541-2004. There will be a
collection for a  payout.

I was all set to go to Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon for the Limited Sprints
and Modifieds, when Mike emailed me with news of the discovery of a new figure 8
track in North Carolina at the Rowan County Fairgrounds. Pam was in New Orleans
for five days, and Mike wanted to go to NC, so i gave up my high school football
and Bridgeport plans and took him up on his offer.

I left right from work on Friday and met Mike at his house. By 10:30, we were in
Roanoke, VA where we stayed for the night.

Saturday we finished the drive to the Fairgrounds. Admission was only $7 for the
second ever figure 8 race at the track. They had one during the fair in
September. This was the first of a new eight race series, which will end next
September during the fair. The car turnout was decent, with 16 big cars and 5
small cars. There were not a lot of spectators on hand at the very nice
fairground facility. We were joined by one other TrackChaser. Before the race we
both enjoyed an outstanding deep fried pork chop sandwich at the refreshment
stand. It was a beautiful November day in North Carolina.

The show started 40 minutes late at 1:40 and they had three 15-lap heats for the
big cars, each with three cars qualifying for the feature. The small cars then
ran their 25 lap feature. The announced ten minute break turned out to be 40,
and then they had the 25-lap big car feature. The show was over by 3:30. By 1:15
a.m. I was back home in Effort. Because of being gone Friday night and all day
Saturday, I stayed home from Bridgeport on Sunday to do other work.

The next race in the eight race series is in March, then they will run every
month until the fair in September.

Next week's plan is once again up in the air. Mike and I were planning on
heading to Georgia for two new tracks for me and three for Mike, but now they
are also supposed to have a Slingshot race at the new track in Wallkill, NY this
weekend. I could be happy going to that and Wall Stadium for the TQ's, but Mike
wants to try for both New York and Georgia. The only problem is that as of
Monday afternoon, they are not even sure which day they are going to run the
race at Wallkill. This could turn out to be a last minute decision. As far as I
can tell as of now, I have three races left for 2009. I'm just not sure if it
will be one new track and two repeat visits, or the opposite.

I hope you all had as good of a weekend as Mike and I did.

Win some, lose some. After just reporting about the new Micro Sprint track in
PA, I read that Adirondack International Speedway will not be opening for 2010.
It appears they are delinquent on taxes. The track always seemed a little shaky,
getting a half million dollar grant from the government to finish the place, yet
they never built their signature track, the Almost Mile, nor the road course.

They did manage to have races on three of five planned tracks. I made it to the
first race at all three. The first race was on a dirt road course in December of
1997. The small half mile opened in 2001, and the inner quarter mile oval in
2004. For two of the three tracks, they only had one race ever as far as I know.
I was hoping to be able to get to the first race at the other two tracks, but I
doubt that will ever happen, but I have had those doubts for several years now.

I discovered a new track that plans on opening next year in western, PA. It's
called Neupert Raceway Park in Cabot, PA. It's planned as a quarter mile dirt
oval running Saturday nights. Micro Sprints, Mod Lites, Four Cylinder Stocks,
and UTV's are planned. Their myspace page lists a June opening date.

I've been around this long enough to know that tracks never seem to open when
they think they will be able to. Some never open. We will have to wait and see
what 2010 brings.

Saturday, November 14 - We decided to drive 45 miles south of Houston today to
visit the city of Galveston.  If you remember Galveston took a direct hit from
Hurricane Ike last September and we are happy to report that things are starting
to turn around for the good in this city.  There are still signs of the
destruction but many have rebuilt and things are looking better.  We had a
wonderful lunch at Olympis on the dock on the bay side of Galveston where I
enjoyed fresh grilled shrimp while Pat feasted on Bossa.  It was a very
enjoyable meal and our conversation with two visitors from South Africa only
added to the enjoyable experience.  After a tour of a tall ship and a boat tour
of the harbor area it was time to head back north on I-45 for our Saturday night
fix of racing.

The destination was the Houston Motorsports Park, a 3/8 mile high banked
asphalt/concrete oval, located in a questionable area of south Houston.  Seating
was a large concrete grandstand with aluminum planks with backs on every other
row.  The pit area was located outside of turns one and two with a clear infield
for good viewing.   Ed Esser and his traveling mate arrived after just about all
of the heats had been completed and sat with us for the remainder of the
evening.   I was upset as HMP's website ad advertised $5 admission by buying a
ticket at Fiesta Marts in the area.  The only problem was we could not find any
in a 10 mile radius of the track.  When registering our complaint to the ticket
seller all she could offer was a "sorry" and a track card to go onto the site to
order tickets off of Ticketmaster.  Yea, right!!!  I want to pay more in fees
than I would pay for the ticket!!!  So instead of the admission costing $5 each
it cost us $15 each plus $5 for parking.  An extra $20 out of our pockets and
with a little common sense the ticket seller could have sold us tickets for $5
each and probably the other $20 would have been spent on souvenirs or food.  But
instead it left us with a bad taste in our mouths (and that wasn't from the $1
hot dogs that were half cooked on stale rolls to boot)!!!

There were seven divisions of racing with the following car counts:  bandoleros
(8), eco stocks (16), NASKARTS (12), limited modifieds (6), pro stocks (9), pro
trucks (10) and late models (13).  Low car counts and too many divisions!!  The
racing was so-so with straight up starts from the heat finishes so there was not
much passing in the features.  The pro trucks and the eco stocks by far put on
the best features of the evening.  Racing started at 6:04 and all qualifying was
over by 7:07.  An intermission followed where all fans were allowed to come down
on the track and get autographs and posters of all the divisions racing tonight
(we knew about this ahead of time and the PR guy told me they were looking to
start the first feature by 8:15 to 8:30).  This was nice for the fans and about
two thirds of the crowd took advantage of the opportunity to go down and meet
their favorites up close and personal.

The bandoleros went green at 8:08 and the last race of the evening was 50 laps
for the late models with checkered at 10:56.  We believe a five hour program is
too long but the fans didn't seem to mind and the regulars are the ones who
support the track week in and week out and a good crowd was on hand so I guess
they enjoy what they are watching and don't mind that the program lasts five
hours.

Not an exceptional weekend of racing but still two new tracks and one new state
for the weekend is not bad.  We have now seen racing in 46 of the 50 states with
two new states added to the ledger this year.  Not sure when we will look to bag
the four remaining ones to join the prestigious 50 state club.  Time and money
will determine that!!

Friday, November 13 - We had two plane tickets set to expire on November 23 from
our cancelled flight to Florida in February so I searched for somewhere to catch
some racing in November.  The spot I picked was Texas and this would be the
first time we had ever witnessed any racing in the Lone Star state.  We flew out
of Philadelphia on a windy Friday with only an hour delay and arrived in Houston
only 20 minutes behind schedule.  From there we grabbed the National Rental
Chevy Malibu and headed north on I-45 toward Willis.

The Gator Motorplex was running the first night of a two night program on Friday
with qualifying heats and dashes for all divisions.  We arrived at 7:05 missing
only the hobby stock heats.  The limited modifieds ran five heats for their 28
car field while the street stocks ran 3 heats for their 19 car field.  The dwarf
cars ran 6 heats for their 32 car field while the pure stocks ran 3 heats for
their 18 car field.  Last but not least the modifieds ran 2 heats for their 14
car field with intermission starting at 9.  We both felt that the number of
heats in several of the classes could have been lowered but that is what they
ran.

The track itself sits right along the interstate and is a 3/8 mile high banked
red clay oval that blackened up farely quickly.  None of the heats were that
exciting and with the stiff wind blowing on our backs and the small number of
people in the concrete grandstands and hillside outside of turns three and four
the 35 minute intermission could have been cut in half.  We watched three of the
15 lap dashes before we decided to call it an evening.  Decent looking track but
nothing exceptional in the racing.

Neither Pam nor I got to a new track this weekend, for the first time since we
went to see the ARDC Midgets at Big Diamond on the last weekend of March. At
least one of us had been to a new week for the past 32 weeks.

The original plan was to go to Georgetown on Saturday for the Modifieds, but
they rained out. The backup plan was to go to Albany Saratoga for the enduro,
but that was canceled. Either of those would have been new tracks for Pam. The
only other Saturday race choices appeared to be Penn Can for Sportsman or
Grandview for an enduro. Neither of those two choices were as appealing as high
school football playoffs.

In PA, the school teams are broken into four classifications by size. Pam and I
went to one game on Friday night (AAAA), one on Saturday afternoon (AAA), and
one on Saturday evening (AA). On Friday, the East Stroudsburg South Cavs crushed
the defending state champ Liberty Hurricanes (where I once taught). On Saturday,
the Wilson Warriors (alma mater of our own Bing Metz, a high school wrestler of
some note), crushed the Pottsville Crimson Tide. And on Saturday night the
Catasauqua Rough Riders (Pam's alma mater and where I did student teaching just
one semester after she graduated) held off the Palisades Pirates. High school
football is one thing I enjoy as much as racing.

Sunday was the rain date for Georgetown, but they canceled that too, already on
Friday. Pam stayed home to grade midterms, and I went to Snydersville Speedway
for their season finale. It was in the high 60's, and too nice to stay home,
although I should have done yard work. What can I say, I'm still a race fan. The
Senior Slingshots were one of four countable classes out of 17, and had the
highest car count with 11. As video killed the radio star, Slingshot popularity
may have killed the Micro Stocks. A class that once flourished at Pinebook was
down to only two cars (one Modified and one Sportsman) at Snydersville. They
also only had two Champ Karts, as a new Winged Outlaw Kart class had five or six
entries. Snydersville was my 91st track of the season so far, of which 59 were
new.

I still have four races left on my schedule for this season, which should be
ending early this year. As of now, the last race I have planned is a return to
Providence for the indoor TQ's on December 5. From Wednesday to Sunday of this
week Pam is heading to New Orleans to present at a conference that will be
attended by Vice President Joe Biden. Neither of us like Joe or his boss. My
plan was and maybe is to go to Bridgeport on Sunday for Sprints and Modifieds.
However, Mike just found some kind of figure 8 race in the Carolina's this
weekend, and he's raring to go. I'll have to do some investigating on this one,
as there are very few if any figure 8 races in either Carolina, except for JM's
annual trip to the Dixie Classic Fair. Maybe I'll end up in NC, and maybe in
Bridgeport.  Maybe even both. We'll see.

I hope everyone had as good a weekend as Mike and Paul did in Georgia and South
Carolina this past week.

Yesterday I found information online that Frozen Ocean, NY is reopening next
year. A group that runs kart races, including Winged Champs, has leased the
track. I went there by myself once for a Slingshot race, but when I got there
there was no one there as they canceled due to earlier rain. I ended up going to
see the Syracuse Skychiefs minor league baseball game that night. I didn't even
know the track was still there. It's always nice to get another crack at one
that was missed, and even better when you can pull a thorn of one that was
actually visited but didn't see races.

Not only is the group running at Frozen Ocean, but they have three weekly tracks
as well. West Amboy runs on Fridays, Moose Mountain on Saturdays, and Savannah
on Sundays. I didn't know about any of those tracks. The Winged Champs seem to
race at all of them. All the tracks are in the upstate New York. Could be as
many as four potential new tracks for 2010.

Keeping with the frozen and New York themes, AMEC has their ice racing schedule
for 2010 on their website. They have races scheduled at eight different lakes,
but none new. I've been to them all. If I don't find different ice races to go
to, you may find me at a couple of the AMEC shows, just for fun.

This just in from Allan Brown. Kingsport, TN ran a UARA Late Model race last
weekend. It was the first race there in several years. If you go to the
UARA-STARS website, you can read all about it. Gordy and I went to that track in
1987, but at that time in was dirt. It's nice to see a famous and defunct track
reopen. Hopefully it will stay open for next year so we can have another chance
to get there. It's surprising that a race sanctioned by a group of that stature
escaped everyone in the groups notice, or at least everyone that wouldn't have
kept it a secret from the rest for strategic reasons.

Subject: [TrackChasers] Georgetown This Weekend

TrackChasers (Take Note Brian Hickey):

Georgetown has canceled for this weekend for both tomorrow (Saturday) and for
the rain date (Sunday). Boo. Albany Saratoga had already canceled their enduro.
Penn Can should be running this weekend, scheduled for Saturday afternoon with a
rain date of Sunday afternoon. Is there anything else running in the northeast?
Guess I should have listened to Mike and taken one of my two personal days today
and headed with him and Paul to Georgia.  Looks like two nights of high school
football for me. Luckily, I love high school football!

   I'll go one better concerning Jim Nace,he was an excellent racer,especially
when one considers the competition he ran against on a weekly basis. In the
pre-WoO days,Nace ran against,argueably,the best group of winged racers in the
country and did very,very well.
   Does anyone know how old he was. It seems like he probably wasn't that old.

Glad to see your schedule. I too had the Orlando Speedworld on my list
as
it is one of the few times to catch the figure eight too. I should be
there on the 27th. Guess that means Carnesville will wait another year!

Central, PA sprint car driver Jim Nace passed away yesterday. He was a very good
racer in his prime, especially in the Camel Express car.

The Saturday November 14 afternoon enduro and races at Albany Saratoga Speedway
have been canceled. They forgot to take it off the schedule on their webpage.
They started laying new pavement and couldn't wait until after the enduro race.
