Lol oopz you spotted my typo, this was to put off any other trackchasers who
think they might get there before me !!!
The corrections are 2 miles east of Freshwater on the B340 towards Calbourne.
This now means i have 58 English tracks to see as i was at Fleet on sunday for
the figure of 8 race which as far as i know means that i have seen all the
figure of 8 tracks that run in England.

You're right, the track is easily spotted and is a full quarter mile on
the inside. I think you meant 2 miles east of Freshwater though; 2 miles
south would put it in the English Channel.

According to the rules of the Balearic Island autocross championship,
which I found on www.efebea.com, there are 6 rounds on Mallorca and 6
rounds on Ibiza. All events consist of several cars starting at once and
the winner is either the first to finish a set distance or the one who
goes the farthest in a set amount of time.

BTW to which gallery are you referring? The "GALERÍA" link on the nav
bar doesn't work for me. The other photos I see are for rallies and
hillclimbs, which have their own championships separate from autocross.

Thanks,

It's getting pretty neat now that we can not only find local tracks in
various countries but see amateur videos of them as well. From that site
I also see there is an autocross on the island of Ibiza and a third
track, but I haven't determined which of the Balearic Islands it is on.
One thing led to another from there and I ended up spending several
hours going through Spanish racing sites.

I must at least somewhat have the makings of a track chaser as on
Saturday, April 21 I had the choice between driving an hour and three
quarters to Monadnock Speedway, a regular early season stop for me,
or driving three and a quarter hours to Wiscasset Raceway, a new
track for me. Like a dutiful track chaser I chose the latter.

While I had driven through the town of Wiscasset, Maine many
times in the `70's during my college years, I had never even seen the
track before. Wiscasset Raceway is a three eights mile semi banked
(10 to 12 degrees) paved oval not far from the center of town. It is
actually the highest banked track in Maine, and bills itself as the
biggest and fastest track in Maine. The track was built in 1969, and
pretty much looks its age. The track itself has wide sweeping turns
allowing side by side racing and three wide for the mini stocks. The
surface is worn, but I can't say it was all that bad. There is a pit
road, or should I say duel pit roads for the bigger events. Several
years ago they hosted a $100,000 to win pro stock race which I
understand was at times a gloves off brawl of a race.

Stacks of tires are piled in front of the retaining wall
along the front stretch and into turn one and two. The retaining
wall stops halfway down the backstretch, with turns three and four
having no retaining barriers and a pretty good drop off, not unlike
turns one and two at Thunder Road. The pit exit onto the track is
halfway down the backstretch, and the cars return to the pits at the
outside of the entry to turn one. The sizable pit area is located
off of turns one and two.

The pace car and safety vehicles are parked in the infield,
but do not obstruct viewing. Today was a day race so I cannot speak
for the lighting. The front stretch grandstand does face the west,
making it harder to see at dusk. The parking lot was very boggy due
to recent rains, with some folks already stuck. It was announced
that if you were patient a tractor would be sent to pull your car out.

The grandstand was the typical plank type, fifteen rows high,
along the entire front stretch and into turn one a little bit, which
is where the pit grandstand is. A modest announcing tower and VIP
booths are along the top of the grandstand.

Concessions are the usual race track fare, but very
reasonably priced with hot dogs at $1.25, hamburgers $2.25 and coffee
at $.75. I did not try any as being the frugal Yankee that I am; I
packed my own lunch from home. There was also a small stand selling
the usual trinkets.

Ticket price was $10.00 which is just about standard for this
area. The divisions are late models, super streets, strictly stock,
mini stocks, legends, and a teen and ladies four cylinder division.
Car counts were in the high teens and low 20's for all divisions
except the teens, ladies and legends. The upper division racing was
good, but five four cylinders or legends on a track this big doesn't
offer much.

I arrived at 2:50 pm for a 2:00 pm start time figuring I
wouldn't miss too much, and I was right. Heat racing didn't finish
until 4:50 pm. Three hours for just the heats is way too much. To
their credit after a brief intermission feature racing got underway
in a timely fashion.

Because the track has such sweeping turns there is almost no real
straightaway, which means the cars are constantly turning and
maintaining some pretty good speed. This is typical of all the Maine
tracks for some reason. Another feature that seems to be generic to
tracks in the Pine Tree state is that there is a 10 foot gap with a
slight drop off between the outside of the front stretch and the
retaining wall. When a guy gets his right front hooked over the drop
off it can be quite a handful.

The announcer was decent, not annoying, but not particularly
interesting either. These days just being not being annoying is a
plus. The flagman was as good as any I've seen; though it seems most
flagman just follow orders from the tower. Wiscasset doesn't allow
two way radios in the cars, so scanner entertainment was at a
minimum. Caution cleanup was a little on the long side, but no
better or worse than most tracks.

It was a beautiful sunny spring day with temps well into
the `70's, and a slight breeze. It was definitely a good day to be
at the races.

Several weeks ago Area Auto Racing News columnist Steve Bubb did a
column on UK short oval racing, based not on personal experience but
through Internet research. A NYC cabbie who goes by the moniker "Jalopy
Jack" has a weekly 10 minute racing show called WLAR (We Love Auto
Racing), which is accessed over the phone by calling 718-707-1052
(normal rates apply). After reading Bubb's column Jack became so
enamored with UK stock car racing that he allocated three of his WLAR
shows to the topic. Steve Bubb and Randy Lewis have already done the
show earlier this month. This week it will be my turn. The show is
scheduled to be recorded late Thursday afternoon. I don't know exactly
when it will become accessible but the recording is available anytime
and runs for a week until it is replaced by the next week's guest. Jack
is especially proud to have had Parnelli Jones and Chris Economaki as
previous guests and he's had Bing Metz on a few times as well. I was a
bit skeptical at being the third person in four weeks to talk about the
same subject, so hopefully I'll have a little something different to add
to what Steve and Randy have already covered.

Hi All,
Sunday was a short drive east to Vinton Ohio where they carved out a
primitive track some 16 years ago. It was a sunny and warm afternoon
and a great day to imagine you were back in the 50’s. This is how the
old tracks used to look! There are no lights so they run afternoon
shows with a drivers meeting at 12:30 and racing at 1PM. They were only
15 minutes late for the opening race of the year on the quarter mile
banked dirt track. The field was small with 4 cars in the V-8 and 6
cylinder division and 6 cars in the 4 cylinder class. They ran a heat
and feature for each. The track was dusty on the inside during the
first heat so they watered and dust didn’t reappear today. There were
about 50 people here in the 10-row deteriorating wood bleacher and
another 7 watching from their yard behind the backstretch. The owner
has acquired some new wood and will rebuild the stands this spring. The
track has long straights and tight turns with no walls but some tractor
tires to protect the pits and spectator areas as well as guard the tree
that sits on the outside of the first turn. There were two speakers
mounted in the trees for the spectators. The track had some hills and
valleys as the winter must have washed out a few places so it was rough
and the cars bounced through the turns. The 6 cylinder feature saw 3
cars start and after one got stuck in the infield mud and another
received a flat tire when they rubbed fenders fighting for the lead
Buzz Karr took the checkers. Five cars took the green for the 4-
cylinder feature and after 20 laps it was pole sitter David Banks
winning over Andrew Dyer. If you ever wondered how your grandfather
raced this may be the chance to see how it might have been – a fun day
anyway.

Hi All,
At about 8:30 I headed out of Brushcreek to look up the Brown County
Speedway in Russellville, Ohio. This was about 30 miles away and I
pulled in during the Chevette heats at 9:10 PM. At 10PM after seeing 2
heats and an intermission the features were ready. Brown County is a
nearly flat quarter mile dirt oval that seems to have an uphill
straightway. An excellent crowd nearly filled the grandstand that
consists of 9 rows of old wooden boards on the cement block supports
along the whole length of the track and is set high above( maybe 10
feet) the track surface. The lights are old and barely adequate. Some
of the speakers were loud and the announcer gave the lineups before
each race. The only wall on the track is the straightaway fence (Armco
and earth with wheel fencing). The track was dry and dusty when I got
there but it is wide and allows for some passing although the preferred
way is to root your way on the bottom. They did run the good classes
first and the late models raced well. There was only one yellow flag in
the first 16 laps of the 25-lap feature for 16 late models. The yellow
fever was on from here as 6 more slow downs were registered – most of
them involving several cars apiece. The battle for the lead was good
with John Sizemore leading from the pole until lap 20 when Barry Doss
who started 6th got on the inside and took command. Sizemore braked
hard (to get back to the pole or to cause a wreck?) in the third turn
and piled up 3 cars. On the restart it was Sizemore in the lead and
Doss trying the inside again. After two more restarts and several
attempted passes Doss got the inside again with two laps left and went
on to score a very popular win over Sizemore and Spenser Watson. The 17
modifieds were next and after 4 yellows it was pole sitter Matt
Smallwood in the winners circle with Bruce Gould second. The 13 street
stocks were next and I started to count the yellow flag laps during the
3 extended slowdowns. They ran 32 laps to realign the cars during these
3 periods! John Baker was the winner from 4th and Jeremie Bretz
finished second from 6th. The Chevettes (14 cars) were the final
feature and after 3 yellows I headed out as it was 12:15AM. Brandon
Elam was the eventual winner from 8th.

Hi All,
I saw that Brushcreek Motorsports Complex in Peebles was having a
practice day followed by an enduro. I headed south and arrived as
several big haulers were leaving. This track is a 3/8 dirt with one
very tight corner and one very sweeping turn to almost form a tri-oval.
It appears the track was constructed as a big half-mile tri-oval that
they have shortened. There are no lights for the backstretch in the
current configuration. The grounds have a large amount of land and
there were some people that wandered up on the rock hill off turn three
that could be formed into hillside parking some day. The haulers were
parked behind the track and viewing was good from any where in the 20-
row wood and aluminum grandstand. About 125 people (I saw later that 30
of these were lap counters) were here for the 7PM enduro that got
underway at 7:15 with a powder puff race. There was no announcer today
so you must have to know what is going on from the last time? The three
ladies lined up in the infield and an air horn sounded and off they
went. The track had been watered before the start so it was very
slippery and speeds were slow. They also have placed some obstacles on
the track in the form of tractor tires and plastic barrels, I assume to
keep the speeds down. The ladies ran about 15 minutes with #12 that
said J C McCane on it the winner. Next the 28 enduro cars lined up in a
long row in the infield and again the horn sounded and off they went.
There were 2 red flags during the first 40 minutes for possible fires
in stalled cars. They ran this as a true enduro with the stalled out
cars becoming more obstacles to get around. At what could have been the
half way point the cars were stopped and turned around and ran the last
half of the race clockwise. One other thing they did to slow the cars
was have a garden hose turned on and running water across the 4th turn
all during the race. At about 8:30 I headed out to try for one more
track.

Hi All,
Saturday my manager had the Iowa Speedway as the track of destination
but I wanted a chance to get more than one for the weekend so I went
out on my own to Ohio. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was hosting the NASA
sports cars that I had seen last week so I stopped for another look at
this group. The course was a 2.4 mile paved road course with several
elevation changes. The track is one of the nicer road courses for
spectators in that there are lots of stands and tunnels and bridges for
pedestrian traffic to move about at the track. There are some good
viewing hills with some shade too but none offer more than 20% view of
the entire track. The car count was good today with 3 races scheduled
and counts of 29, 28 and 50 set to race. As usual with the road courses
the races went off on time with a set time limit on each race. Jeremy
Miller was the apparent winner of the first race from the pole but was
disqualified at inspection and the win went to Randy Walker who had
started 5th. There was an announcer that described the race which is
unusual for most road courses but you had to find the areas with a
speaker to hear his comments. As race two was nearing its end I headed
out to check out southern Ohio’s dirt tracks.

....but not for me. It was another week at home, working on spring house
projects and some local racing including Snydersville Friday evening, Mountain

Cashmere opener Saturday, but didn't want to miss the big TQ race at Mountain.

Home all day Sunday, draining the pool and gettingthe patio furniture out of the

Not only will there be the mixed road course at Sunset Speedway this
year on 8/5, which by the way will also include off road bus races, but
Sunset is also having a monthly "jalopy" class that will race figure
eights on 6/16, 7/14, 8/11 + 9/15. OORA is also in "strong talks" with
Delaware and Kawartha to have 3 point shows at each this year, so
Ontario continues to be a hotbed of new track possibilities.

'road course' set up like Glad Rag was when the RallyCross took place.

Hi All,
Next, a drive back to Dillon where they are opening the new paved track
and have an overflow crowd of over 3,000 in attendance. The track here
is a banked paved 3/8-mile and again lined by concrete walls inside and
outside. There are good lights and a grandstand area of 6 concrete
steps with individual seat backs. I arrived to see the standing room
only crowd standing for the National Anthem right at the 7:30 start
time. The format is for features only for the 11 Trucks, 24 Allison
Legacy cars, 6 chargers, 5 street stocks and 13 four cylinders. There
didn’t look to be any seats so I stood and noticed some people even
stood on the picnic tables behind me. The pitted all the cars in the
infield but I later found out visibility from the seats was still good.
I heard a familiar West Coast voice next to me and sure enough I found
out Randy Lewis had done the same afternoon drive as I had done. You
know – open a new track and they shall come! The track seemed hard to
pass on but then the southern style of qualifying and putting fast
timers in front does not lead to much passing anyway. The four
cylinders went 30 laps and had 4 cautions as pole sitter Chris Kenney
held off 6th starter Brian Jordan. The 5 street stocks managed 5
yellows in 35 laps and 4th starter Barry Flowers recovered from a 8th
lap spin to win over Wesley Cornell. The six chargers went 18 laps
before a debris yellow and then went to lap 37 before things got nuts.
With 3 laps left and only 3 cars running the front row cars tangled
with pole sitter Bozie Lane hitting the wall hard and retiring to the
pits. Tom Amerson was sent to the rear (second). On the restart Amerson
charged hard and spun but on the last restart easily passed the slower
car of Bobby June for the win. The Seneca sponsored trucks went 75 laps
with only 3 yellows (2 for debris) and third starter Jason Calhoun took
the lead on the 7th lap and scored a victory over Hal Goodson from 5th.
Last on tonight’s program was 50 laps for the 24 legacy cars and they
had a red flag when Andrew Belmont was shaken after hitting the wall on
the 7th lap. There were 7 yellows; some for multi car spins as these
smaller cars were able to do a lot of side by side racing. Brandon
McReynolds started on the pole and was the winner but Michael Cooper
applied pressure from 9th and Josh Butler from 8th. The show was over
by 11:10 and it was time to start the drive home. I ran into the first
showers less than 20 miles down the road!

Hi All,
Low Country Kartway in Aynor South Carolina was my revised destination.
I drove right by Dillon where they race tonight and saw a lot of
spectators already there but I went another hour southeast to Aynor. I
followed signs to the track where the sign said a paved track. I found
a nice 1/5 mile dirt oval with wide runoff areas and smooth slightly
banked surface. The track is surrounded by old fencing with tire
barriers in front of that and has four sections of 5 row bleachers.
There are nice lights that were not needed today and good speakers. The
pit area has paved roads and all the staging areas and tech areas are
paved. There is a big building for refreshments and scoring and a nice
flag stand that over looks the track. I knew that I arrived late and
saw some trailers already leaving. I did not know how close to missing
this show I was! This feature was the second to last of some 25 classes
for the day and one of only two that count for track chasing. The
senior champ lites were up and raced 20 laps with four karts and
Bradley Bell the winner. Earlier in the afternoon the same four had
raced as senior champs heavy and Brandon Beal was a winner. There was
one last flat kart feature and the day was done and time to head back
to Dillon. Sometimes it’s good to be lucky! If I would have stopped to
fuel or eat I would have missed this show altogether.

Hi All,
Saturday my plan was an afternoon stop at the North Carolina Speedway
in Rockingham. I had been here in 2002 for a great NASCAR Busch series
race on the high banked mile but with the oval not used any more
today’s event was for the NASA sports cars on a 2.2 mile road course.
The course uses about 90% of the oval. The races start at the oval
starting line, use the high banks of one and two then turn into the
infield at the end of the backstraight. They head back to the second
turn area and then wind through the infield to the fourth turn of the
oval where they re-enter the big track and complete the lap. Viewing
from the top of the media center building was excellent with only about
50 yards of the track blocked by the building itself. The NASA schedule
called for 3 races today with the first event for 18 cars called the
lightning race for 25 minutes (16 laps were run) with Billy Bunn
winning from the pole over Tom Hennig from 5th. The Thunder race had
11 cars going 25 minutes and winner Heikki Rinta-Koski completing 17
laps. He started on the pole but was passed by Randy Suddreth after
several laps of close racing. The two battled for the early laps before
Suddreth pulled away for the apparent win but the rear end broke with a
couple laps left and he coasted to the pits while Rinta-Koski scored
the easy win. I would have stayed for the third race (both groups
combined for another 25-minute race) but I found out about a kart track
running an afternoon show back in South Carolina.

Hi All,
Now the story from the Anderson Motor Speedway. Anderson was about 35
miles back northwest and I had driven by there this afternoon to make
sure they were racing and find the track. Anderson is a 3/8 mile paved
track with banking and again lined with concrete walls and pitting all
the cars in the infield. Lights were very good and speakers were fine
for a nice crowd of about 1200 on the 14 concrete steps here. They have
a nice building behind the stands for concessions (they ran out of food
tonight) and a second floor for announcers and some suites. They also
had a new concrete block rest room building but it was roped off and
port-a-potties were in front of it. Racing tonight were 6 late models,
11 “C” mini stocks, 12 “B” minis, 12 super renegades, 12 renegades, 19
legends and 4 young guns. I arrived at 9:45 during the “C” mini feature
that Michael York won. The “B” minis went green for all 18 laps after a
4 car tangle on the first start and we saw front row starters Mark
Timmerman and Scott Hamby trade the lead before Hamby got around for
the win. There were 2 pro, 4 masters and 13 semi pro legends here
tonight but all 19 raced in a 20-lap feature that was won by Justin
Ashley from the 3rd starting spot. Wesley Thompson started 10th and
finished second to win the pro trophy and Jerry Rector was the master
winner. The legends ran well with only two yellows but some tempers
flared after the race and the security was called to separate two teams
at the scales. The six late models were brought to the track and the
kids were called to the track for an autograph session so that is when
I left to go back to Mileback. Gary Greenwood won the late models from
4th according to the website.
