My vacation was to have started last night at Shady Bowl Speedway in Ohio, but
when I arrived I found that they had already canceled. They said a shower hit
just before qualifying. It didn't look like it had rained that much there and
was still early, with a good chance that there wouldn't be any more significant
rainfall the rest of the evening. Because of that, I was disappointed that they
didn't start drying the track and just start late. I am now at 2 rainouts in 2
attempts to see a race at Shady Bowl.
Today's forecast now looks even worse than yesterday's. My first choice was
Hawkeye Downs. There is already rain scattered all over the upper midwest and
heading towards the area I'm in for this evening. Des Moines is predicted to get
1 to 2 inches today and more tomorrow morning.
I'd have to drive a long way to escape the probable chance of rain and this
isn't one of those trips where I am going to drive all over the country trying
to find a track that's running. I'm currently in a rest area on I-80 between
Davenport and Iowa City (my first time using free WiFi on my own computer). I
guess I'll wait a while and try to see where my best chance of seeing racing is
going to be between Hawkeye Downs, Davenport, Iowa State and Fayette County.
Tomorrow I'll be checking in at my headquarters near Des Moines for the next
week. Hopefully the rest of my plans will turn out well.
I checked some notes I had forgotten about at the last minute yesterday and
found another track to add to the end of the trip, on my way home. The Clinton
County Fair in Wilmington, OH, has a figure 8 scheduled for Monday the 13th.
