I spoke to Tiffany tonight. Tiffany was very excited to hear that she
was named the USTA's player of the week.
Tiffany mentioned her new coach, Sandra Cacic (a former top 30 player
on the tour), has helped elevate her game and fitness to the next
level. They spent a lot of time over the off-season working on both
Tiffany's fitness level and her game as well.
Their hard work is paying off...and this is just the beginning!
Please visit www.TiffanyDabek.com to read Tiffany's latest "News from
the Road" entry.
Lastly, Tiffany won her first-round match in Fort Walton Beach today.
GO TIFF!
Until next time,
Michael
Congratulations to Tiffany! She won her first singles tournament of
the year, a $25,000 USTA Challenger in Tampa.
In typical Dabek fashion, Tiffany won her last two matches both three
setters. The semifinal match featured a third set tiebreaker that
Tiffany won 7 to 5.
Way to go, Tiff!!!
Next up on the schedule is the $25,000 challenger in Ft. Walton Beach,
Florida.
Stay tuned as we will post Tiffany's thoughts on her first tourney win
of the year!
Way to go, Tiffany! What a pleasure it was to see you come from
pretty far down and pull out the title in Tampa, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
She was one point for losing the final on four different occasions,
but showing her poise and persistenct, Tiffany managed to fight all
four off and win the title on her second match point. The match time
was nearly three hours and was filled with plenty of great points. My
hat goes off to Tiffany's opponent, Vasilisa Bardina. Vasilisa played
hard till the very end and never gave up. She was very classy
afterwards, showing a lot of grace in defeat.
Best of luck next week.

MATCH SUMMARY
-------------
Sorry for the lateness in the match summary and details.
Tiffany played Vera Douchevina of Russia (the #33 seed) on Monday,
August 29.
Tiffany fell 6-1, 6-2 in a match that had a closer second set than the
score indicated.
Tiffany played well, but credit goes to Douchevina. Douchevina played
an almost flawless match hitting aces and winners with only a few
unforced errors.
Tiffany had a great US Open qualifying for the main draw. She will
use her experience as a step to bigger and better things in the
future.
Next up for Tiff is a trip to Europe to play on the clay courts. GO
TIFF!
MATCH DETAILS
-------------
Tiffany's match was the third match of the day on Court 6. This is
the same court where Tiffany played her second round qualifying
match.
The day started off like a typical late August day, hot and humid.
The newspapers commented that the air was as thick as cotton candy.
These conditions are well-suited for Tiffany's game as her incredible
fitness helped carry her through to three consecutive three-set wins
in the qualies.
However once the match started (around 5:00 pm), the temperature
cooled down and the sun disappeared behind the clouds.
The entourage was on-hand again to root for Tiffany. The entourage
expanded to include Michael's (that's me) wife, Heidi, and his brother
in-law, David, and Michael's sister, Nancy.
Tiffany was dressed in a stunning red, white, and blue new Fila
outfit.
Unfortunately the first set went by very fast with Douchevina winning,
6-1. Douchevina was hitting with a lot of pace and was playing
exceptionally well.
Tiffany's game picked up in the second set. Tiffany had triple break
point, but was unable to convert as Douchevina raised her game by
hitting aces.
Tiffany had some other opportunities in the second set and was able to
break Douchevina's serve. However Douchevina was too good this day
and Douchevina won the second set, 6-2.
Tiffany is excited about her first US Open. She definitely earned the
big prize money and ranking points. Tiffany said her ranking should
be around 169 after the US Open which is an all-time high for Tiffany.
Tiffany is scheduled to play in Europe next week. Wish her luck and
GO TIFF!

Bruce from Minneapolis here. I had the pleasure of hosting Tiffany in my home
in Mpls
when she played the local challenger event here in January. I am so excited
that Tiffany
has made the main draw of the US Open! Go Tiffany!
Your match descriptions are great, and I can only imagine the spectator
excitement that
was generated as Tiffany fought her way to victory. I know that I was sitting
at my
computer with sweaty palms, hammering the refresh key to catch the latest scores
and
pounding on the table in excitement. Thanks again.

MATCH SUMMARY
-------------
Tiffany won her 3rd round US Open qualifying match today against
Maria Fernanda Alves: 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Tiffany moves onto the main draw of the US Open where she will play
Shahar Peer of Israel.
This will be the first main draw tennis match for Tiffany in a Grand
Slam event.
Way to go, Tiff!!!
MATCH DETAILS
-------------
Tiffany's match was on Court 11, a show court (this means there was
lots of seating with TV cameras) and this court was adjacent to
Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The entourage was on-hand once again and we were louder than ever.
The weather was perfect: low 80s with a slight breeze and light
clouds on a sun-filled day.
Tiffany's opponent is from Brazil and not only is Maria a very good
all-court player, she is also a good friend of Tiffany's. They have
played several doubles matches together.
Maria's style of play contrasted with Tiffany's first two opponents.
Tiffany's first two matches were against players who are very
aggressive baseliners. Maria is more of a counter-puncher and her
style has led to good results on clay and on the hard courts.
The match was exciting with lots of long drama filled points. Maria
used the moonball (high looping shots) tactic to frustrate Tiffany in
the first set. Tiffany was down 1-4 in the first set before she
started her comeback.
Tiffany got to 4-4, 30-30. Tiffany played a great point and got to
the net but just missed a volley. Maria broke serve and held to
close out the first set, 6-4.
Tiffany is a smart player and she decided in the second set to be
patient and wait for the short moonball to attack. She took the
moonballs on the rise and went on the offensive and took the second
set 6-2.
The entourage had the entire crowd chanting "TIFF-A-NY!, TIFF-A-NY!,
TIFF-A-NY!" along with "U-S-A!, U-S-A!, U-S-A!" Maria was in for a
long day in the office.
Tiffany kept up the momentum and played smart agressive tennis in the
third set. She raced to a 5-1 lead and had a couple of match
points. Tiffany was backed up as Maria raced towards the net to
finish the point off...Tiffany hit a high lob that Maria swung
desperately at, but missed. Maria thought the match was over and hit
her extra ball in her pocket a mile into the air. But, alas, the
ball Tiffany hit was called out.
Maria played some great tennis to get to 5-3 and had Tiffany down 15-
30 on her serve. Was the momentum shifting?! No way, Jose! The
entourage would not let that happen. Tiffany fought her way to 30-30.
At 30-30 Tiffany won a long, hard-fought point and reached another
match point. This time there was no stopping Tiffany. She moved the
ball around until she got a short ball that she hit for a
winner...game, set, and match, Ms. Dabek!
The crowd gave Tiffany a standing ovation. After shaking hands with
her good friend, Maria, Tiffany thanked the crowd for their support.
TIFFANY IS IN THE MAIN DRAW OF THE US OPEN!!!
Be sure to wave "Hi" to Tiffany as she drives her Lexus courtesy car
around Manhattan next week!
We will have new pictures in the Photos section of the Yahoo! Message
Board soon. Check them out in the August 26 folder in the 05 US Open
folder. http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/TiffanyDabek/lst
MATCH SUMMARY
-------------
Tiffany won her 2nd round qualifying match today at the US Open. She
defeated the #4 seed, Tszvetana Pironkova: 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Tiffany played her match on court 6 which is adjacent to the Arthur
Ashe Stadium court.
Tiffany had a great match and used her fitness and mental toughness
to wear down and frustrate her opponent. At the end of the match
Pironkova could barely hit balls back.
Tiffany fought off an early break of serve in the third set and took
over the match at 2-2. Tiffany won the next four games to take the
match.
Game, Set, Match, Ms. Dabek!!!
MATCH DETAILS
-------------
The entourage was on hand again to root Tiffany on. Alex's brother
joined us - he flew in from Brazil this morning!
Tiffany's match was the second of the day on Court 6. Tiffany had a
good practice session on Court 5 at 10 am.
Tiffany started the match strong. Tiffany mixed up the pace of her
shots to perfection. Pironkova was thrown off by Tiffany's smart
tactics.
The entourage recruited several fans to join them. Chants of "U-S-A,
U-S-A, U-S-A!!!" were heard as well as "TIFF-A-NY!, TIFF-A-NY!, TIFF-
A-NY!"
Tiffany easily won the first set 6-3 and had the momentum going into
the second set. As with her first-round match, her opponent took a
bathroom break at the end of the first set.
Tiffany cooled off a little to start the second set and was broken,
albeitly due to a horrible line call on the baseline (her opponent
hit a ball two inches out on the baseline at 30-40).
Tiffany fought back to 4-5, but her opponent held serve to take the
third set.
The momentum had shifted as Pironkova broke Tiffany to open the third
set...then the entourage took over. We urged Tiffany on to fight the
fight and she responded.
Tiffany broke serve and eventually got to 2-all. Tiffany's
outstanding fitness again paid off. Her opponent is 7 years younger
than her, but it was Pironkova that was sucking air every point.
With nothing left in the tank, Pironkova lost the next 4 games. In
fact she was so tired at 5-2 that she could barely hit the ball back
into play.
The excitement from the fans was contagious. The court was packed
and the New York crowd loved rooting for Tiffany.
Game, Set, Match, Ms. Dabek!
Tiffany will now face Maria Fernanda Alves tomorrow in the third
round of qualifying at 11:00 am on Court 11.
GO TIFF!
Tiffany asked me to send out a heart-felt "Thank You" to everyone for
their support. Many followed her match on the US Open live
scoreboard. It was exciting to watch the match and I'm sure it was
equally exciting watching the score online.
MATCH SUMMARY
-------------
Tiffany won her first-round US Open qualifying match against Katerina
Bohmova. The score was 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
The match was close with long rallies and great points. Tiffany
fought off a match point against her at 4-5 in the third set.
Tiffany broke serve and decisively won the next two games to take the
match.
Game, set, match, Ms. Dabek!
For more details on the match read below.
Tiffany's next match is on Thursday, August 25 against the number 4
seed, Txzvetana Pironkova.
MATCH DETAILS
-------------
Tiffany's friends, Michael (that's me), and Alex (her friend from
California), and her mother made up the entourage on Court 14.
The conditions were good for tennis: temperature in the 80s with a
slight breeze and sunny.
The sun was a factor as Bohmova had to look straight into the sun
when she served on one side of the court.
Bohmova served to open the match. Tiffany came back from 0-40 down
to reach deuce each of Bohmova's first two services games, but was
unable to break serve.
Tiffany was able to hold her own serve and then she broke Bohmova
twice to take the first set. Tiffany's outstanding fitness level
really came into play. She was moving Bohmova side-to-side with a
great variety of topspin, flat, and slice shots. Bohmova started to
hit drop shots in desperation and exhaustion. Tiffany spanked those
drop shots for winners.
Bohmova, sensing the match could be over quickly, took a bathroom
break after the first set. The tactic worked as Tiffany was a little
flat, dropping serve twice and getting down 1-4.
Tiffany quickly turned things around as Bohmova was fatiguing.
Tiffany fought back to 5-5. Bohmova called for a trainer and this
again slowed Tiffany's momentum. Tiffany was broken the next service
game, and Bohmova closed out the set at 7-5.
The third set was a downright war. Both players held serve twice to
open the set.
The match reached 4-4. Tiffany's serve was broken after a very hard-
fought game.
Tiffany called for the trainer. Tiffany had some slight tightness in
her shoulders and legs.
This time the slight delay slowed Bohmova. She served for the match
at 4-5 and got to 40-30, match point.
Bohmova had foot faulted a couple of times during the match. At
match point, she crushed a first serve that was a service
winner...but she was called for a foot fault! Alex and I were
sitting right on the baseline and her back foot did indeed touch the
baseline.
Bohmova hit a second serve, but a ball kid dropped a ball behind
her. The umpire called a let.
Bohmova got another first serve. Again she hit a service
winner...but again she foot faulted! Bohmova was unnerved. She
looked at the linesman. Bohmova quickly lost the next two points and
the match was even again at 5-5.
At this point, most of the US Open crowd had gathered around the
court to watch the match of the day. Alex and Michael cheered loudly
for Tiffany. Chants of "USA, USA, USA!" were even heard.
Tiffany played a smart service game, wearing out Bohmova and holding
serve easily. At 6-5, Bohmova had little left in the tank.
Bohmova's first serves were either landing 15 feet out or hitting the
bottom of the net. Tiffany was relentless, moving her side-to-side.
Bohmova was sucking some serious air even in the middle of points.
Tiffany got to 30-40. Bohmova double-faulted...game, set, match, Ms.
Dabek!
Check out the Photos section of our the message board for pictures!
