MATCH DETAILS
-------------
Tiffany's friends, Michael (that's me), and Alex (her friend from
California), and her mother made up the entourage on Court 14.
The conditions were good for tennis: temperature in the 80s with a
slight breeze and sunny.
The sun was a factor as Bohmova had to look straight into the sun
when she served on one side of the court.
Bohmova served to open the match. Tiffany came back from 0-40 down
to reach deuce each of Bohmova's first two services games, but was
unable to break serve.
Tiffany was able to hold her own serve and then she broke Bohmova
twice to take the first set. Tiffany's outstanding fitness level
really came into play. She was moving Bohmova side-to-side with a
great variety of topspin, flat, and slice shots. Bohmova started to
hit drop shots in desperation and exhaustion. Tiffany spanked those
drop shots for winners.
Bohmova, sensing the match could be over quickly, took a bathroom
break after the first set. The tactic worked as Tiffany was a little
flat, dropping serve twice and getting down 1-4.
Tiffany quickly turned things around as Bohmova was fatiguing.
Tiffany fought back to 5-5. Bohmova called for a trainer and this
again slowed Tiffany's momentum. Tiffany was broken the next service
game, and Bohmova closed out the set at 7-5.
The third set was a downright war. Both players held serve twice to
open the set.
The match reached 4-4. Tiffany's serve was broken after a very hard-
fought game.
Tiffany called for the trainer. Tiffany had some slight tightness in
her shoulders and legs.
This time the slight delay slowed Bohmova. She served for the match
at 4-5 and got to 40-30, match point.
Bohmova had foot faulted a couple of times during the match. At
match point, she crushed a first serve that was a service
winner...but she was called for a foot fault! Alex and I were
sitting right on the baseline and her back foot did indeed touch the
baseline.
Bohmova hit a second serve, but a ball kid dropped a ball behind
her. The umpire called a let.
Bohmova got another first serve. Again she hit a service
winner...but again she foot faulted! Bohmova was unnerved. She
looked at the linesman. Bohmova quickly lost the next two points and
the match was even again at 5-5.
At this point, most of the US Open crowd had gathered around the
court to watch the match of the day. Alex and Michael cheered loudly
for Tiffany. Chants of "USA, USA, USA!" were even heard.
Tiffany played a smart service game, wearing out Bohmova and holding
serve easily. At 6-5, Bohmova had little left in the tank.
Bohmova's first serves were either landing 15 feet out or hitting the
bottom of the net. Tiffany was relentless, moving her side-to-side.
Bohmova was sucking some serious air even in the middle of points.
Tiffany got to 30-40. Bohmova double-faulted...game, set, match, Ms.
Dabek!
