All practices and pick-up should be canceled for the following reasons.
Warm weather can cause excessive heat stress while exercising.
Being too warm even for a few minutes can cause unpleasant body odor.
Filth from the ground may come in contact with clothing resulting in soiled
garments and an unkempt appearance.
It is better to deny yourself unnecessary indulgences like physical
exercise
in favor of spending the remaining few hours of the semester miserable
lamenting your past performance you cannot change while procrastinating the
work that will make no significant difference in your grades or future.
The unsanitary practice of sharing a single disc causes illness due to the
unhygienic surface of the disc spreading germs to all the players.
Sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer.
Segregation created by choosing teams causes negative feelings towards
others
not on your team.
Some people have undiagnosed medical conditions that may be serious risk
factors for exercise related activities.
The outdoor environment puts players at a significantly increased risk of
exposure to large scale static electrical discharges (lightning) caused by
atmospheric movement.
Airborne particulate matter or insects may cause damage to the eyes of
players.
Non-player peer groups may observe your performance in public as well as
your
association with a known sub-cultural group causing irreparable damage to
your
reputation and future well-being.
Observing the opposite gender during physical exertion may cause thoughts
in
direct conflict with the religious beliefs of players.
Competition causes some people to loose and suffer emotional distress while
others are winners and may develop superiority complexes.
Minor injuries may be made worse by overexerting.
Healthy players may become injured.
There is a possibility of inclement weather which increases the likelihood
of
illness.
Hard and dry fields may cause long term damage to joints.
Lumps of grass may cause twisted ankles.
Wet fields cause slipping and falling injuries.
Increased biomechanical stress in the elbows caused by throwing results in
increased rates of cumulative trauma disorders like tennis elbow and carpal
tunnel syndrome.
Athletics are not a legitimate part of a University education anyway.
Ultimate involves physical activity and by its very nature carries with it
certain
inherent risks that cannot be eliminated regardless of the care taken to
avoid
injuries.
Sometimes ultimate involves strenuous exertions of strength using various
muscle groups, sometimes it includes quick movements involving speed and
change of direction, and often involves sustained physical activity which
places stress on the cardiovascular system. The specific risks vary from
one
individual to another, but the risks range from 1) minor injuries such as
scratches, bruises, and sprains 2) major injuries such as eye injury or
loss
of sight, joint or back injuries, heart attacks, and concussions 3)
catastrophic injuries including paralysis and death.
I do not think given all of these serious risks we can encourage anyone to
play ultimate ever again. Please destroy your discs and try to educate
others
in the public to the inherent risks of ultimate. If anyone wants to help
me
put some padding on the pointy corners of the coffee table ya?ll can come
over
and watch a non-violent show like the 700 club.
See you inside.
Wayne.
