Roy,

I'm glad you liked the new material. I was hoping you would approve of the section on the blade throw, a lot of which came straight from your own articles. I liked your word "wiping" in reference to the index finger release especially well becasue it captures the essence of it.

We are both Ralph's fans, I never saw Nobody as him as a thrower.

BTW, I teached some folks here on Your long range half spin style, and they not Only loved it, but were able to Handle it.

So, our "exotic"knife throwing group is a Success.

Just cant wait to watch Ralphs new DVD.

Abraço (accollade) , my amigo.

And, how are things up in old England????

I had the same problem last week while throwing in a friends Music studio.
One idea is to throw sitted on a chair...and, even this cant work if you are Too far from the target. Knives need a high flight to compensate the gravity...
Regards
Dalmo
PS- one of my stunts is actually to throw sitted on a chair. Its not difficult once you get the way...

Another tip.. throw *INTO* the garage, not into the street - neighbors
don't like that. :-)

(Also, shine a bright light on your target, so your eyes don't struggle
when you're standing outdoors in the mid-day sun.)

(Also also, you may wish to throw a couple of old blankets or cardboard
on the garage floor to save your blade tips, if you haven't tried that
already!)

If you can vary your distance for a half spin, even though it might only be
up to 15ft, you are a true blade thrower.

A Tip---open your garage doors for more distance. LOL.

I'm having a little trouble sending messages from here, I think it's
straightened out.

I don't know if I'm qualifiref to call myself a blade thrower.
I throw by the blade with a 1/2 spin but only from 8, 12 and 15 feet.
I also don't always use the conventional blade throw, because at 12 and 15 feet
I extend my
forefinger onto the blade slowing the rotation in that matter for 1/2 turn.
At 18 feet I throw by the blade but for 1 1/2 turns.
At 24 feet and up I alternate blade and handle every additional three feet .
This is kind of moot because since moving to an apartment in Colorado I only
have space in the
garage for 18 feet.
We're in Parker Co. now and pretty well settled in.
Good luck to all throwers and I hope to see more of you at Carl Geddes Chucker

Timothy,

I made 50 of those knives, but I gave most of them away to friends. I only
have my own set left, plus one each for Ralph and Dalmo. They weigh 12ozs.
by 13 and a half inchs long.

Im sorry I have no more, if I had ,you would be welcome to them.

Hi All  {:^)

I finally got round to a bit of throwing yesterday - first getting my hand in on the dartboard in my workshop, then in the garden, chucking a 'dibber' tool from Wilkinsons at my archery target.

I've decided that this year I want to master one-spin throwing so that I can start using live knife blades...

Take care everyone !

Juan,

The problem is, a lot of knives called throwing knives, are in fact made
only for throwing, BUT are no good for throwing. This mainly relates to
our styles, no spin-half-spin, etc, wheras for multi set distance spin
throwing, almost any shape of knife is ok, but I say, "almost".

After 55 years of making my own knives for all distance half spins, and to a
lesser extent, no spins, I find a straight sided knife, handle and blade,
with a symetrical point, is best for all round throwing. Reason being a
certain degree of slideability is required, of the knife from the hand, and
you cant get that with a funny shaped handle/blade. Look at roys knives in
the pics section, and in the short DVD.

A good start is with a one inch wide blade, by three sixtenths thick steel,
about 13 inchs long. You can get this mild steel strip from a stockist,
and get your friend to fashion a decent centre point with his grinder.
Then if you can, get them case hardened at an engineers heat treatment
shop, then they will never dent or burr. Then clean them up, dip the
handle end in a tin of black paint to resemble a handle, let it dry
properly, and you have knives for life.

Note. Make sure you finish the shape properly if you are going to have
them hardened, cause you wont be able to file them after, and if you angle
grinder them after hardening, you will go through the hard case.

Roy

The heavier the knife, the harder to stop/control the spin. Thats why the
shuriken are short and light.
Also at the long throws of 40ft plus, a lot of power has to be put into the
throw, it just cant be done with a one pound knife.

I have several of the CS bowie axes too, and I quite like them,
though I have to tighten the nuts on the scales regularly. Their
heft makes them hell on smaller targets, but I managed to wrestle a
four foot round of oak onto a platform, and it'll handle the damage.

Using ERT style no-spin, I can only get back about eighteen feet
before I start slapping, so rebound is something I have to keep in
mind. Thus far I've managed to avoid skewering myself.

I've just recently started to try shuriken-style throwing with much
smaller knives than I normally use. Some of the folks on Youtube
seem to be able to throw nospins with this style at forty feet and
beyond, which is pretty amazing. Of course they don't have nearly
the stopping power of a one pound bowie, but still just as a feat of
dexterity that is a pretty impressive throw.

Can any of you folks manage distance like that throwing shuriken
style?

Should note that it was really easy to move from ERT style throwing
to shuriken, perhaps because ERT emphasises instinctive adjustments
to grip and release. I had my brother over at my woodworking shop
last week, and he was, good naturedly, ribbing me about wasting my
time acquiring a skill without real life application.

It was one of those rare moments when I didn't fumble with a showy
gesture. I palmed a needle-file from my workbench, turned and threw
in one motion at a dartboard on the wall across the shop, and pegged
it about three inches from target centre. As casually as I could
manage, I responded,

"Oh, I don't know. I can see that being a potentially useful skill
somewhere down the line."

*chuckle*

I'll take moments of pleasure when I can get'em.

Hi all,
it is a shame to keep silent when we have so many hobbies in common,
I throw knives, axes and other sharp things, I shoot air rifles and
pistol, and also the bow.
Everyone who comes to visit me is invited ( forced )to have a go at
my target when the weather allows it.
On some sunny days, we can be as much as 7 to ten people trying to
destroy a fruit or tree leaf fixed to the logs.
I still struggle with the Thorn way of "no-spin", the difficulty
being that I cannot do it from far enough to avoid dangerous
rebounds.
It looks like it will be easier to train/learn AFTER I achieved some
progress which is a little absurd a situation.
I have bought, tried and damaged the Mc Evoy designs made by Cold
Steel, apart from the repairing bother, they are very good knives
(but not very well constructed), thanks to the design, the bowie axe
being my favourite.
Do anyone know why they are discontinued ?
I know some will say that Tru-Bal is still in business and criticize
me buying imitations, etc...but here in Belgium what with the
customs, the law and the shipping charges, buying a Cold Steel from
a german online shop is easy, fast and cheap.
Price is a factor when you have to buy a knife before trying it
(some models look great on pictures but don't suit me in real life).
As I write, I am waiting for a throwing friend who is also quite
good with an angle grinder and who has made possible some
improvements, pictures of which ( the improvements, not the friend )
will be following next week.
Cheers,

Juan.

Oh, I know I won't stop completely. The last time I went camping I
brought an assortment of knives and a throwing axe, and introduced
several new throwers to it, and it reminded me how much I enjoy
it. Eventually I'm sure I'll find my spot around here, but the
inconvenience does affect how often I can practice. Too bad, right? Well,
everything else is going well in life - can't ask for everything. :-)

hahahaha.. thanks, and careful - I may take you up on that if business
takes me there.. though it's highly unlikely I'd risk bringing any of my
knives through US customs. ;-)

cheers,
greg

Its a shame you have no place to throw. If you had moved south near SD,
you would find plenty of room at Carl Geddes place to throw with the
chuckers, and be very welcome to do so.

Stick with it though, its a lifetime thing. Im sure you will find throwers
in your area. I will ask Carl if you are near to anybody.

You are welcome to come and throw at my place, but I fear its too far at
6000 miles. LOL.

I recently moved from the east coast (boston area) to the west (east

Good to know you are spreading the word and the actions down there, keep it up, you are of course our south of the equator knife throwing teacher.

I like the sound of the musical throwers, maybe they can write a hit song about throwing, eh.  lol.

Arrange a little online contest, its up to you, but how many will take part is hard to tell.   I reckon just a few. We never seem to get many posts, even though we have over 150 signed up to the site, I cant really understand the reason for that.

Im not having much success with my compound bow.   Ive already ruined 9 expensive arrows through missing the target and hitting one of my sheds.  The arrows go clean through the half inch shed panels, and smash into pieces, if they are carbon arrows, and bend if they are aluminium.   I think its due to my arms not being strong enough for the poundage.

Take care.

Hi, Roy!
I was about to write you.
I made some new friends, they are musicians, with songs composed to some of the main Brazilian singers, but they are also fanatic knife throwers, last monday I spent a Day in theys stuido throwing knives and shooting with air carabines, they have some very interesting samples. They are so mad about knife throwing that they made a Stand Inside theyr studio, its even Sound Proof!
But what remembered you was that, after "normal' spin throwing, I teached them the long range half spin and they simply could not believe theyr eyes!
I told them about you and how did you teach me, and in a half hour two of them were Actually throwing long range half spins, pretty well.
So, youre making Disciples in Brazil
If you want, we can do some kind of "free style"competition just to warm up after winter time (there, cause Here we will start Winter time, that in Brazil just means I cant swimm, but its not very cold.
Best regards, my amigo, be well....

Hi Roy,

Nice to hear from you. I' ve been trying to throw a little every other day or so for a month. I'm trying to get in shape for when we will be filming this fall. Get me one of your knives before then and I'll use it in the new video! Also, send me your new mailing address offline, and I'll get you a new dvd sometime.
