Its not the fact that the knives were bouncing point first out of the springy wood, its that my first 4 throws slapped the board flat, and rather than stop there and then, and make my excuses, I just carried on.     Actually the pallets were the heavy duty ones that carry machinery, with an inch and a half thick planks either side and weigh about 150 lbs each.
About half the bad throws hit point first, but the other half were just plain hopeless.   Ive never been as bad as that before, but ive never thrown frozen before, and I aint gonna again.

Roy,

Don't be so hard on yourself. It is damn near impossible to stick knives in manyf pallets, especially lightweight or dull knives, because of what I call the "trampoline" effect. I mentioned this in my book. Pallets are so springy they are dangerous to throw at because of the bounce-backs. You should have turned the pallets sideways and thrown at the solid side.

Some time ago there was some video floating around online of someone in Japan throwing a spike 60 feet, and also someone throwing in a yard near a garage in an urban area. Am I correct? I didn't see the video because I delayed watching it thanks to my slow dialup. As I recall, you said that one or both of these men throw the no-spin the same way you do.

I bring this up because it is very likely that the men in the videos were Houzan and Handa. Roy, I think you are throwing shuriken style, like Houzan. Just this afternoon I have been experimenting with it per his instructions and it is making a lot more sense to me...

The other day I was delivering finished work to one of my main customers.   I had 7 heavy boxes  which I carried in to their factory containing machined fishing tackle parts.

There was a new guy at their firm, and he came over to me and said, "are you Roy the one who throws knives".    I said , yes, but not a lot lately, its too cold.     He said," Ive always wanted to throw knives, but never seen it done up close, I have two knives here,
theres a pallet outside, can you show me a few throws".     I said OK, but its a bit cold but I will throw a few times only.

So  outside we go.

I was wearing a thick coat, a thick jersey, my arms were aching, I was shivering, and my hands were like icicles, but I was sure I could show him a few sticks from different distances even though I had no feel on his knives.

In a nutshell, I threw about 25 times, and stuck 5 knives only.   I also threw his hawk and stuck it only once in 6 goes.     I was about 12-------16ft at the most in the varying ranges.     The knives were not very good and the pallet was springy, but there was no use in making excuses.      I just said its a bad day, and walked away head bowed.

Dalmo,

The shuriken throwers I am learning from use the same grip I use, not the palm grip. Only they seem to choke up or down on the knife, whereas I always hold the knife all the way back on the butt of the handle.

Dalmo,

You suggestetd the way I would prefer to do it, just make your own copies and sell  them directly to people. If people will go to the combatknifethrowing.com site they can order them; I know Bobby has handled orders from Brazil. But a lot of people are hesitant to order online.

Do you have a Paypal account? Would that have to go through the Brazilian government?

A guy came here to buy some knives

I showed spin throwing from 1/2 to 4 spins, No missing
Well, no secrets, I'm Used to it.

I showed him hawk throwing (I'm Pretty decent on it) 1, 2 spins (8 ms, around 26 feet, no missing) . More than 10 throws.

I showed him Ralphs no spin, 10 feet, perfect.

I showed him Your style, this time 14 feet, perfect. 10 knives.

Than I decided to show him Sharp blade throwing (using your way)  and I missed Lots of throws. The knife went again and again to the ground, heavily.
My face became Red.

I just learned what was happening when it was too late. The knife had a Heavy handle, so its balance for long range spin throwing was confuse, it only worked long range half spin from 16 feet Plus, and I thought it would work at 14.

So, youre not the only Idiot in town. And it was Not cold down here.

It was warm and I was in shape.

Thats life....

Best regards

Dalmo

Hi Dalmo,

You're welcome to send your friend Douglas my e-mail address if he has a computer. If that doesn't work we'll figure something else out.

Hope all is well with you...

Dalmo, I have an idea. Would you like some copies of my dvd to distribute here and  there, in situations like this? I will sell you some at a huge discount, then you can make a little money off of it...

Thanks, all donations are gratefully received.

The problem is the time factor in making my knives.
I dont make knives from old sawmill blades that are hardened and tempered suitably for throwing knives, I make mine from  sheet plate that has to be machined and angled before the carbon is introduced.    After that is done cleaning up and stoning is performed before putting the decorative p.t.f.e. side plates onto the handle end, cause I hate to throw bare steel, and I like my knives to look like knives, hence the handle plates.

There is a pic in the files section, of a set of 5.    To add some idea of size to the pic, the knives are 14 1/2   inchs long, and weigh 12ozs. each.      Just like thin daggers really.

How many knives do you want to make this time?  I bet we could sell a few just on this group alone.

I dont have much interest in knives, save the ones I make for myself,
however I made two hundred last time and ended up giving most of them away,
and I kept just 3 sets for myself.
I dont have the time to make knives for others, unless its a huge order, my
spare time is still taken up doing my air-weapon designs and prototypes, but
not for profit, I have given up on gun profit, so I do it out of interest
only.
There are plenty of knife makers out there already, we also have a couple in
our group as you well know, but its not for me, cause a knife has no
engineering problems to solve and thats what I like doing, improving on
mechanical apparatus such as pnuematic weapons.

Have you ever considered doing custom throwing knife making, just for
kicks? You seem to have advantages and could offer benefits others
could not...maybe I'll order a blade thrower or two from you one of
these days...

49 percent full, with everything on there now. I tried to only post
the smallest of my clips. If I posted a few longer ones I could easily
fill the group's space...

Sounds like we need to take up a collection to send to Roy.

Roy,

I will send you one of my knives.     I am already sending one to Dalmo, although I am going to to that over xmas when I have spare time.
Send me your proper mailing address, and Dalmo, send yours again, it got deleted by mistake.

I would love to have one of Roy's knives, as a keepsake if nothing else. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Roy, I was thinking more of you using knife making not as a business, but as a sort of promotion, a focal point for promoting your style. I have been thinking that if and when I do an expanded version of my video that I would like to package copies with knives. If you had a knife of some kind it would be a "sweetener" to get people watching a video, mine, the one you do yourself, Dalmos', etc. We would show the knife in the video itself...that kind of thing.

ert,

Sounds like we need to take up a collection to send to Roy.

Roy,

How many knives do you want to make this time?  I bet we could sell a few just on this group alone.

Ralph

Roy,

Have you ever considered doing custom throwing knife making, just for
kicks? You seem to have advantages and could offer benefits others
could not...maybe I'll order a blade thrower or two from you one of
these days...

Ralph

I know its easy for me , cause I have my own engineering company and access to all sorts of hardening equipment, but I dont get the problem of burrs, or sharp slivers on the edges where my knives hit and slide together.     All the knives I make are case hardened to a depth of roughly -030 inch.    My surfaces are glass hard and cant even be filed, similar to a ball-race case.

Even without being able to do that yourself, any heat-treatment shop will do it for you very cheaply.  Any steel except stainless can be cased.   It pays off inasmuch as your knives will never blunt, bend, burr, or dent except a minor dent mark if they hit hard enough, but hardly noticeable.

Make sure you get the shape you want right, and the finish, and the edges, cause you wont be able to alter it after  case hardening, unless the blade is reheated, altered, and reheated and quenched again.    The carbon stays in the blade once its introduced.

Gloves take away a little precision but not enough to matter. I always wear gloves when I throw in the winter. Wearing thick gloves while throwing was what gave me the idea to put socks on my hands in my video...(there's now a clip posted in the group files of me doing that, for those who haven't checked them out)...

Does anyone but me ever have the problem of getting burrs on the blade when throwing by the blade, and having them cut your index finger open on the release?

Roy,

There's an indicator towards the bottom of the "files" page that says what the total we're allowed is, and each individual file also shows how much space it is using. When I checked it said we were 49 percent full, with everything on there now. I tried to only post the smallest of my clips. If I posted a few longer ones I could easily fill the group's space...

Curiouslly, with gloves I can throw Further than from my normal marks (barehanded), and Yes, Burrs are Very dangerous, thats why its important to Look Very well at your knives when they hit each other, I had some Very hurting wounds when I started throwing by not looking at it.

A File is a Very important friend of a thrower...I once had an Horrendous wound caused by a Chinese cheap thrower, it actually developed a kind of Needle cause it was not well finished, and this needle penetrated my hand like a fishing hook. Delicious...:) .

In addition to extra free groups (by the way, you can fill up Cut-N-Shoot, if you want)  Has anyone asked Scott Gracia about posting them on his web site?

If it hadn’t been for his site, I never would have found this group!  (Now you know who to blame!) =D

Bobby,

People seem to respond to the clips on the combat knife throwing site,
as you always thought they would, so I guess it would be a good idea
for us to put as many as possible on there. Fill up the space.

Maybe some of the guys on this site could give us a few short clips to
go on that site, too? Anybody?

Also, come to think of it, we could link from the combat knife
throwing site to the files section here, or to another free group we
could start, and take advantage of this bit of free space we get, to
get in even more clips...

Roy,

I don't know if we can buy any more space or not, but it shouldn't be necessary, we can start more groups, rotate clips, or whatever. (By the way, I've had the idea that I might start a "by invitation only" group just for business purposes someday, which would only have a handful of members. The topics would be promotion, commercial knife making, dvd distribution, that kind of money related stuff only. So far it has never seemed necessary). If we get full, feel free to delete whatever of my clips you like, or ask me and I'll do it. I just tried to put a good little variety on there. I remembered those old cds I used to give out, where I had bunches of individual clips, and realized that there was something in a format that would make it possible to post clips here. There are a couple of longer ones I'd like to post, to show more examples of what my "martial arts" style looks like ( a picture really is worth a thousand words), but they would take a long time to download with my slow connection. Maybe later.

Does anybody have any suggestions for something they think would be good to post free online here?

Hi, Amigos, I problably will be raining in the wet, discovering America or any other way you use to say that I realized a thing Everybody knows (but not me, untill now).

While making some knives I decided to do some throws with a Very sharp knife and I 'discovered"that my working gloves (these rough ones, made out of leather rasps ) was Not cutted by the knife, so I did a slide (Blade Up) throw from half spin, then others, lots of the, than others from 1 and half spins, etc.
I also did some with Long range half spins, Sliding my finger throught the cutting edge...

A wonder, cause what would be a Mutillating release became as simple as drinking a Coke (or, in England, a Guiness).

And the knife Stuck Marvellouslly in the target, all the time. Actually, as its Sharp, it stuck Deep.

So, this is a New (again, for Me) approach for throwing knives, cause with the gloves I can throw Any knife, without having to blunt it (oh, for sure, too hard or too thin knives will Brake, but some of mine are Not too hard or too thin...).

Would like to haves some opinions....

Im dim, I never thought about that.    Are we stuck with the small amount of space, or is there some way to get more.
If not maybe its better to add another site as you say.

I just had an idea. We could start other groups for the express
purpose of posting video clips, etc., to get around the space limit.
For example, I could start one called Blade Thrower Two, Dalmo could
start one called Blade Thrower Three, etc., and post our clips to the
files section of those groups...just a thought.
