In my later works I specify a more precise balance point: .38 of the total length of the knife from the back of the handle.
Measure the total length of the knife, multiply by .38, and that will be the distance from the back of the knife to the preferred balance point. (or, .62 from the point = the same thing). On a 10 inch knife, 3.2 inches from the handle end, 6.2 inches from the point, is my preferred balance point.
But remember that it is just an aid and not totally necessary. And it might be that you prefer the balance point somewhere else. You have to experiment.
