The rink is open on Sunday so there shouldn't be a problem getting the room.

This is to confirm that we will hold our next and last meeting for
2006 this Sunday, November 19th at 2pm at Sharpstown.
Could somebody confirm that we can use Sharpstown room? Thanks
Please send me your item for the agenda by Saturday pm.
Thanks and see you Sunday
Catherine
Team,
Let's keep to this coming Sunday and work with whomever shows, otherwise
we'll become tangled in the holiday season. We can use the session to set
some goals for 2007.
Thank you!

I have been working with the USFS and the Girl Scouts
Council of San Jacinto to brainstorm a patch/badge program for brownies/ girl
scouts. My thoughts are as outlined below for your consideration.
Target timeframe - January - National Skating month
Purpose - 1) Fundraising and 2) to build pipeline
into Basic Skills for our member clubs
Target audience: brownies (7-8 yrs old) then girl
scouts if the brownie program is successful
Patch and/or badge program
Patch program - One Day - Two hours -
one hour on ice, one hour off
Badge program - Three weeks, one day each week -
one hour on ice, 45 minutes off
The multi-week program on ice would be a progressive
program to learn the basics of ice skating: how to fall and get
up, how to stop, how to skate
forwards, backwards and turn etc. The day program would obviously do this
in a shorter timeframe.
Items that could be discussed off
ice:
§Exploring the sport of ice skating. What are some ice
skating sports and related supporting organizations? We could have some skaters
and/or coaches, judges join us. All very simple. We could share
books, magazines, play a video of celebrity skaters etc. History
of the sport, what are the different disciplines etc.
§Ice skating safety. What do you wear for ice skating
indoors or outdoors? What safety equipment should be worn for recreational
skating? Know how to wear and take care of a pair of ice skates. What do ice
skates look like vs hockey skates etc. What are
the rules at your
local ice rink or park?
§Stretching and 'jump' class 'teaching'
rotational jumps, landing positions, spirals, split jumps and maybe even lineup
for
a synchronized skating pattern.
We would need a facility with ice (obviously) and a little training
room, so I think all of our member rinks would work. I know the Girl
Scouts of San Jacinto has offered one Sunday a month to the troops for skating
in Clearlake. Thus far there are no 2007 dates set, so we are clear of
any conflicts, at present.
GSSJC indicated that charging a fee of $20-30, plus their
admin fee would be acceptable per participant. Obviously we have to cover
ice time and any external participants. They are very enthusiastic and
believe we will get a great turnout.
National Skating Month in January would be an ideal time to
host this program. We would get a complete 'how to guide'
with sample press releases and certificates etc from USFS. We would get 50
give aways of the promotional items including pencils, chap sticks, post-it
notepads, t-shirts and other goodies.
I am happy to spearhead this and will continue to develop the
template with GSSJC. They will need to submit a program concept only
to their headquarters by November 1st, in order to have a
patch/badge made etc, to be ready for January.
Please give me your thoughts.
Thank you kindly,
Dawn

Hey - I like it. Seems you've worked it out fairly well. Let's not lose
sight of the purpose - THE JUDGES! So Kim doesn't play well with others, the
rest of us do. Norman's as an after thought did not go over well, seems all
those gold medals around their necks don't mean much in Houston.

Thanks for your research. Just a thought. It looks like we have two hours to run a test session. Perhaps a variety of levels...We should still charge the usual testing fees and that will certainly help cover some of the ice time costs. Just a thought.
Back in 1998-99, there was a judge's clinic in Sugarland/Houston by USFSA. My kids were pre-alphas at the time and I remember that the $70 fee for parents seemed a little high so I did not attend. I wanted to learn more about the judging at the time, but not willing to spend that much while my kids were still learning to count cross-overs. Perhaps we could sell some observer/coach/parent passes for a reasonable fee to help offset this workshop expense.
Could we find out what tests and how many tests and then estimate the income from that. $1300 is a lot of money and if we could reduce the costs by $400 for tests, then we could go to the clubs for about $200. I really hate to deplete the TFSA bank account below $1000. We need to do this estimate of club expense so that the local club boards can do a vote for spenditures. For example, this item may not appear on a club's budget for 2006-7 and would need to have their local board approval.
I would like to see a bid from all rinks in the area. Houston FSC got surprised with a $300 per hour bill from Sharpstown Ice, after we have been paying about $275. This price increase did not come with notification and the bill was presented to us after we used one hour and just days before our regional exhibition. We know that we could have secured ice for at least for $275 at most other area rinks if we were aware of this price hike. Clearlake is very accomodating and has lots of meeting space on the second floor and the building seems to be warmer during the cold months. Sugarland has a nice upstairs area and their rink management is trying to work with the skaters.
I am wondering about the three hours for pairs as we really don't have much pairs in this area and the need is not great. Perhaps this is something that judges need to get their certificate for the next appointment. But we would have to fly in some pair skaters. There is an adult/coach/married team from North Carolina named Johnson that could demonstrate. And of course Kristi and Glenn Norman. There is a juvenile team of Emily Chan and Daniel Terzakis. I really can't think of any others in the city that are competing. Perhaps the workshop could train on freeskate judging as well.
Calender wise, quite a few skating families will be in Denver for the 2007 Southwesterns soon. Some will be traveling as early as Oct. 7-15. So planning a meeting may be challenging this month.

Dear TFSA Board,
Please see below, in bullet format, initial details I
obtained from the USFS representative Sam Singer, as well as my thoughts on
organization. I believe this would be an invaluable service to the local
skating community and to our regional judges if TFSA were to facilitate this
event in the early Spring 2007.
One day event - Saturday
Facility needs to have ice and additional rooms for
demonstration purposes. Seems that either Sugarland, Texas Ice or
Sharpstown would be the candidates.
8:00 -10:00 -
Welcoming remarks, general overview of rules, new changes, overall
skating standards
10:00 -10:15 - Break
10:15 -12:15 -
MIF - On-ice demonstrations and discussions AND conduct actual
tests and have judges trial and discuss
12:15 - 1:00 pm - Lunch - Buffet
1:00 - 1:30 - Q&A for MIF
1:30 - 2:30 - PAIRS Off ice
demonstrations w/ different level pairs can be side by side doing various
lifts and different features
2:30 -2:45 - Break
2:45 -4:30 - PAIRS - On-ice
demonstrations/ discussions and - if possible, have pairs go through
programs w/ actual or practice tests, i.e. pairs can skate a program and
be judged as a test - trial judges can get credit;
4:30- 5pm -
wrap up discussion, including Q&A for PAIRS
In terms of ice time, its four hours of actual
time. We would obviously need to shift the agenda around to
accommodate the most cost effective use of the rink. Perhaps the
lunch, Q&A and Pairs off ice section can be taking place concurrent
with a public session, so that we can avoid paying for that ice as well, as
I believe most rinks in town have public sessions on Saturday afternoons.
USFS will allow that we charge a nominal ($15-$25) fee
for hospitality (breakfast/ lunch)
School participation ranges from 20-50 persons.
Assuming ice costs of $275/hr and that we schedule
efficiently to only need the four hours, plus food conservatively at $150
(I know this is high). We should probably provide paper pads etc.
Thus initial costs look to be approximately $1300, which almost empties
the TFSA coffers. Remember though that TFSA will receive annual $50
dues in January from each of four clubs and some costs will be offset by
the hospitality fee.
Perhaps we could consider asking each member club to
subsidize the TFSA expenses by $150 each or so, as this benefits everyone
equally. Considering Houston/ regional judges are utilized by
IceSkate USA, I am happy to approach them
to help with costs as well.
Next steps w/ tentative deadlines:
Board agreement to pursue - by Friday 9/30
Agreement of potential early Spring date ranges
- by 10/6
Agreement of facility (more specifically ice costs
confirmation) - by 10/13
DMM to reach out to Sam Singer then Robert Rosenbluth
to start the set up faculty/ agenda - 10/15
Determine organizing committees/ volunteers -
next TFSA meeting (Nov)
Identify hotel/ other accommodation needs for out of
town attendees (Nov)
Publicize etc. - by 12/1
Catherine and others, please come back to me with your
thoughts.
Thank you

Hi All,
Sept 9th works for me if we can't do the 27th of August. I agree with
Kim that trying to hold a meeting during the comp won't work.
Sandi
I think that meeting during the Houston Fall Invitational (Sept. 1-4) in Sugarland will be a challenge with many board members involved with the competition as a skater, judge, parent or volunteer so let's perhaps meet during a slower weekend say September 9th at SIC.
I can meet on the August 27th if everyone is available, too.
Iceland is already having meetings at SIC on the 27th, so while comvenient, that could make for a lenghty afternoon.
How about the 9th or 10th Sept?
