TFSA Board,
I have been working with the USFS and the Girl Scouts Council of San Jacinto to brainstorm a patch/badge program for brownies/ girl scouts. My thoughts are as outlined below for your consideration.
- Target timeframe - January - National Skating month
- Purpose - 1) Fundraising and 2) to build pipeline into Basic Skills for our member clubs
- Target audience: brownies (7-8 yrs old) then girl scouts if the brownie program is successful
- Patch and/or badge program
- Patch program - One Day - Two hours - one hour on ice, one hour off
- Badge program - Three weeks, one day each week - one hour on ice, 45 minutes off
- The multi-week program on ice would be a progressive program to learn the basics of ice skating: how to fall and get
up, how to stop, how to skate forwards, backwards and turn etc. The day program would obviously do this in a shorter timeframe.
Items that could be discussed off ice:
§ Exploring the sport of ice skating. What are some ice skating sports and related supporting organizations? We could have some skaters and/or coaches, judges join us. All very simple. We could share books, magazines, play a video of celebrity skaters etc. History of the sport, what are the different disciplines etc.
§ Ice skating safety. What do you wear for ice skating indoors or outdoors? What safety equipment should be worn for recreational skating? Know how to wear and take care of a pair of ice skates. What do ice skates look like vs hockey skates etc. What are
the rules at your local ice rink or park?
§ Stretching and 'jump' class 'teaching' rotational jumps, landing positions, spirals, split jumps and maybe even lineup for
a synchronized skating pattern.
We would need a facility with ice (obviously) and a little training room, so I think all of our member rinks would work. I know the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto has offered one Sunday a month to the troops for skating in Clearlake. Thus far there are no 2007 dates set, so we are clear of any conflicts, at present.
GSSJC indicated that charging a fee of $20-30, plus their admin fee would be acceptable per participant. Obviously we have to cover ice time and any external participants. They are very enthusiastic and believe we will get a great turnout.
National Skating Month in January would be an ideal time to host this program. We would get a complete 'how to guide' with sample press releases and certificates etc from USFS. We would get 50 give aways of the promotional items including pencils, chap sticks, post-it notepads, t-shirts and other goodies.
I am happy to spearhead this and will continue to develop the template with GSSJC. They will need to submit a program concept only to their headquarters by November 1st, in order to have a patch/badge made etc, to be ready for January.
Please give me your thoughts.
Thank you kindly,
Dawn
