Hey Rob (and maybe a few others),

There are three more races left to try out CX and demo a bike. Check out http://www.vandesselsports.com/expos.html for the details and if you are interested then send them an e-mail to reserve a bike. All you need is MTB shoes and pedals.

I'll be at all three of the races Nov 28, 29 and Dec 5 and they are all pretty close. The races next Saturday and Sunday are within an hour away and the race in Dec. is only about an hour and a half away.

Cross is really a great way to improve your skills and fitness while having a ton of fun.

Hopefully I'll see some of you there.

District might host an opening stage of the 2011 Giro d'Italia, local
cyclists crossed their fingers for what would be one of the few
opportunities to see the world's best professional cyclists stateside.
Not only did the rumor turn out to be true, but planning for not one,
but two stages in the city are underway.

CyclingNews is reporting that a group of local race promoters is
proposing that the Giro – one of three Grand Tours of professional
cycling – come to the District for an opening prologue and the race's
first stage. Both would use the city's many monuments as a backdrop,
and the first stage, a circuit race, would add in a climb in one of
the District's many neighborhoods.

Mark Sommers, a local race promoter who put on the 2008 Capital
Criterium, told DCist that "lots of preliminary work on potential
courses" is taking place, and that he remained in active discussions
with Giro officials, Mayor Adrian Fenty's office and city agencies.
(Sommers not only races alongside Fenty on local team D.C. Velo, but
he has also been nominated by the mayor to serve on the D.C. Board of
Elections and Ethics.)

While the prologue would stay within the city's federal core, Sommers
said, the first stage would likely incorporate parts of Rock Creek
Park and Massachusetts Avenue up toward the National Cathedral to add
climbs to what is an otherwise relatively flat city. (The Italian
Embassy is located just off of Massachusetts Avenue along Embassy Row,
adding certainty that the race would use the hill as part of the
route.) He added that they were looking to include as many
Italian-inspired sites as possible along the route, hinting at a pass
by the Watergate, which was designed by Italian architect Luigi
Moretti. Both the prologue and first stage would remain within the
city's boundaries.

Nothing is yet certain, though, as race organizers still have to
contend with the cross-Atlantic commute and consequent time
differences, neither of which is likely to make the close to 200
cyclists and their support staff very happy. Regardless, Sommers
pointed out that interest exists on both sides

Basso and Contador to join forces?

Alberto Contador and Team Astana seem to be moving closer to a deal for the 2010 season. The two-time Tour de France winner has reportedly signed a contract to ride Specialized bikes in the coming season, and it appears that the Kazak team will follow suit. In addition, there are indications that Contador may stay with the team for more than one additional year, with Ivan Basso rumoured to be on his way to the team too.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Contador signed a contract for 700,000 Euros to ride the American-made bikes. However despite it being an individual deal, they indicate that the team will also sign, having used Trek bikes this year. Specialized provides bikes to Quick Step and Saxo Bank.

Yet Contador's future at the team is still far from certain, with Astana still without a ProTour licence for 2010. The International Cycling Union (UCI) is expected to announce its decision on the team's licence this coming Friday. However Fran Contador, Alberto�s brother and manager has said Contador could stay with the team for longer than one year.

In another twist in what's been one of the most drawn-out transfer sagas of the year,La Gazzetta dello Sport also state that Contador is working on bringing Ivan Basso to the team. Basso, who won the Giro d'Italia in 2006 and served a two-year doping-related suspension for his involvement with Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes, is under contract to Liquigas for the 2010 season. He would be available to join Contador at Astana in 2011.
