Hi Dave:
George from Ferguson's told me you might be interested in
my brother's ride. Please check out his web page, (Craig
Broeder), where you can see the NBC, media coverage link and see
about the ride which began in Austin on May 15th from Lance Armstrong's bike
shop, "Mellow Johnny's". His 9000 mile ride is to
establish a foundation for Ovarian Cancer research that will focus on
Preventive medicine through exercise and nutrition. He'll be coming through San
Diego on Sunday, May 31st. I'm hoping to get a group of riders to
escort him as he leaves Encinitas on his way to Los Angeles. More
information is available at the web site: www.bicyclingforovariancancer.org where
you can see his daily progress and updates. Feel free to give me a call
at 760-944-7726 here in Encinitas.

Mission Bay to La Jolla
Great ride this morning from Mission Bay, around Fiesta Island, up to La Jolla,
and back. We used little-known bike paths that allow you to stay off major roads
but still maintain a direct route.
Our route: http://www.mapmyride.com/view_route?r=307124089003012997
It was a cool, foggy, chilly morning in San Diego as we met for a road ride from
Mission Bay. In our pre-ride announcements, I took the opportunity to spread
some of the word handed down from the Breast Cancer Fund, and mentioned the
potential harmful effects of some sunscreens that contain parabens. We often
don't think about the chemicals we put into our bodies via lotions, but
transdermal absorption is very concentrated and should never be overlooked. To
see whether the sunscreen you use is potentially harmful, go to
cosmeticdatabase.com and enter the type you use. You'll be surprised.
Announcements out of the way, we made our way around Fiesta Island, a
low-traffic area that affords cyclists and joggers a beautiful view of Mission
Bay. Exiting the island, we headed north on Mission Bay Drive dodging the
numerous joggers that seemed to be out in force! We must have seen 300 joggers
throughout the course of the ride. It was great to see so many people getting
outside to play.
At the northernmost point of Mission Bay, the cleverly hidden Rose Canyon Bike
path exits the road and skirts the marshy inlet that leads to Pacific Beach. We
followed the bike path to the end, crossed under I-5, the continued north on
Santa Fe Street which dead ends at the bottom of the 52 Bike Path (right at
CA-52). Closed to vehicular traffic, the 52 Bike Path takes you from the
northern end of Mission Bay Drive all the way up to La Jolla/UTC, where you can
then access roads that will take you to UCSD. We went up to the UC Cyclery Bike
Shop to pop in and take a look around, then headed back to Fiesta Island.
Before leaving the bike shop, we took a minute to talk about proper shifting,
making sure everyone understood the term "cross-chaining," and the importance of
keeping low gears up front with low gears in the rear and high gears up front
with high gears in the rear. It's a simple thing to do, but if no one has ever
explained it to you, you figure that clicking noise coming from your front
derailleur is just the way the bike is. At least, I did before it was explained
to me.
On the way back, we had to go up a curb to access the bike path from the road.
Most cyclists dismount and carry their bikes up the curb, then carry their bikes
down the steps to the bike path, as the ramp is very steep and turns sharply.
The first time I took this ride, I rode with three guys who all popped their
front wheel up the curb and then rode down the ramp. I made a point to learn how
to do it for the next time, and was soon popping my front wheel up curbs without
thinking about it. Today I did this, hoping the other girls would either follow
or say, like I did, "Hey! Are you allowed to do that?! Show me!" Sure enough,
Rebecca was intrepid enough to ride down the steep ramp, looking through the
turn and making the corner without issue. Triumph! As a bonus, when we returned
to the parking lot she wanted to learn to pop her front wheel up the curb. Cool!
A convert. Bwahahahaa!
It was a great ride at a social pace that was fun for our girls who had not been
on the bike for a while, as well as provide some new challenges for our seasoned
riders. No matter what ride you're on, there's always a skill you can practice
or learn.

ok, my first "posting" was a bust - it should have gone to the San Francisco group. Just ignore :)

Hi Luna Chix,

This is a friend of mine from Temecula - a few of us had a chance to ride with
her at Vail Lake, she is an amazing athlete and a very patient 'teacher' on a
MTN bike! I urge you to ride with her if you can......unfortunately I will be
out of town for this one!! Feel free to contact her directly at the number
below or at sunydays22@... or you can reply to me

Hi Ladies!
I hope you have all been enjoying the remarkable weather outdoors lately!
I wanted to get together for another ride on Saturday May 23rd at a place called
Daley Ranch in Escondido.
I realize that is Memorial Weekend, so I'm sure many of you have plans, but for
the ladies that will be in town....come join us!
I was thinking that 10:00 am would be a good meeting time.
Now, for the ladies in the Temecula & Murrieta areas we can all meet at a
central location and you can follow me to Daley Ranch if you would like to! Just
let me know.
Daley ranch is a great place to ride, for the most part we will be riding on
wide, non-technical fire roads. There will be small sections of single track
(narrow dirt trails) with rocks that we can just roll over or walk over,
whatever you are comfortable with.
There is usually an abundance of hikers whom we will need to be considerate of,
sometimes horseback riders as well.
Daley ranch has hills! Although the dirt paths are not very technical, there are
hills to climb. Nothing too steep, more like a gradual incline, but your legs
will certainly feel the burn (in a good way), and we will take our time climbing
them!
No one gets left behind on these rides! We are there to have fun and enjoy the
day. This is considered a beginners paced ride!
Now that being said, if there are stronger riders that would like to break away
and ride at a faster pace then by all means please do! Enjoy your ride and your
day! Thats what it's all about!
The plan is to take it easy, get more familiar with our bikes, get a good
workout, enjoying nature and each others company.
It will probably be warm so bring ample water. If we start to run low there are
drinking fountains to fill up at next to the old ranch house.
The ride time is dependent on our group of ladies. Normally they can last
anywhere between 2-3 hrs @ a nice easy pace, with as many stops for water and
resting as anyone may need!
I have attached a map of the Daley Ranch trail system, just so you could take a
look @ it.
And the physical address is below.
Please feel free to call or email me with any questions, comments, or concerns!
Until then...HAPPY RIDING LADIES!!!

TLC of San Diego
I would have loved to have been on the ride this morning, but alas, we are short a person at the Running Center, and since I'll be leaving for the month of June, I am filling in wherever possible. (If anyone is looking for a job, we are hiring at the Carlsbad location.) I will look forward to joining you ladies again when someone is hired and/or when I return from my vacation! It sounded heavenly. I love that ride through RSF. Also missed the Lunafest because I worked late that night.
I've been running and swimming, but not biking much, so I really look forward to getting back out there with you.
Hey, would the group be interested in a running shoe clinic sometime? We could set something up and offer a 15% discount that day. Let me know if you're interested.
Also, has a bike clinic ( ie changing a flat, lubing the chain etc.) been scheduled at all for this summer? I am embarrassed to say that I have still never successfully changed a flat alone, and I want to get past that fear, because it's always in the back of my head when I ride alone, hence I am loathe to do so. Keep me posted.
Thanks Luna Chix for all you do,
Caroline

Hello Ladies!
We had a small group for the Rancho Santa Fe ride this morning (we think the threat of rain scared a few would-bes away) but we had a great time!
The route was 20miles through Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch - very wide open and limited traffic - so pretty scenic... and safe = can't beat that! We came back on the 56 bike path (which I had never been on before) so it was great to get a chance to ride on it [it is Wide] and enjoy chatting with the other riders.
Out on the road we had Leah, Cindy, Bevin, Robin, and Dan - who all maintained a pretty even pace, so it was very easy to keep together - I think everyone talked to each other rider at some point in the ride :)
We had a few 'inclines' but nothing more than 3% grade (or so MapMyRide says) so it was very do-able.
Hope to see more Ladies out on Sun, and in the coming weeks!

The San Diego LUNA Chix Triathlon Team is excited to announce open spots on the
2010 team roster. You are receiving this email because you have participated in
past Chix events (ride, clinics, etc.) or have shown interest in joining the
team in the past. Each year, a few of our teammates choose to focus their
priorities on other things and we have spots that will open up on the team.
What are we looking for?
First off, women who share our commitment of encouraging women and girls to
participate in the world of cycling and triathlon! It doesn't matter if you are
an experienced racer or a recent cycling enthusiast who still has a lot to
learn, we share a common purpose of supporting other women by building a local
cycling and triathlon community through clinics and rides. We are looking for a
range of knowledge and experience, as well as enthusiasm and commitment to
getting women of all skill/fitness levels involved in different types of cycling
and triathlon.
In addition, we look for:
Reliability & commitment to team responsibilities
Event organizing skills & follow through
Self-starters who take initiative and know when to ask for help
Genuine love for the outdoors
Commitment to safety and responsible trail use along with some knowledge of
the San Diego area/places to ride
Role model who encourages others
Communication skills and approachability
Desire for new friendships
Team players and a true spirit of collaboration
Support for LUNA products
Commitment to having FUN!
What do we do?
In addition to enjoying new friendships that begin with a common love for
cycling and triathlon, we have a number of responsibilities to the team and to
LUNA Bar. It is our charge, as a team and as individuals to meet these annual
commitments:
o LUNAfest film festival (assist in coordinating event and raising $)
o Attendance at annual LUNA Summit in San Francisco where all LUNA Chix from the
27 teams get together for skills clinics and FUN!
o Monthly team meetings to plan for '10 season
o 2 group rides per month
o Monthly events (might include a booth at a festival)
o Written reports of each event submitted to LUNAbar monthly
o Weekly postings on team website
o 2 skills clinics, on/over a weekend
o Fundraiser(s) for the Breast Cancer Fund (www.bcf.org)
o Optional races (we are NOT a competitive team, however, we do support team
members who wish to try racing or improve their skills in this area)
*We agree to events/dates at the beginning of the season to confirm commitment
by all team members
What else should you know?
We serve as ambassadors to the LUNA brand. As spokeswomen, that comes along
with some nice benefits!
How do you apply?
Applications for the team will be going out later in the season; however, we
highly encourage and recommend that you come out to our rides and clinics to get
to know the team and show off your leadership skills!
Feel free to share this information with other women who are passionate about
cycling! We look forward to seeing you again this year, whether or not you
choose to apply to be on the team. We are always happy to share our knowledge
and LUNA products with those who join us in the spirit of building a cycling and
triathlon community amongst women in the San Diego area.
Happy training!
