Come ride with us this upcoming Sunday! We will be previewing the
San Diego Internaltion Triathlon bike course. This is a challenging
course - road bikes only. There are a few really good heart racing
climbs and many rolling hills. I do not recommend this course for
beginners.

We will meet at Cancer Survivor's Park (Map links below) at 8:00. Be
ready to roll out at 8:15am. We will make our way to Cabrillo
Monument. (the gate opens at 9:00)

**Please Note**

There is $3.00 per person fee to go all the way to the top. We can
discuss this in the morning as to who plans on going all the way up
to the top and who wants to turn around at the guard post. We can
split up into 2 groups if we have different levels of riders as
well.

If you are doing the SDIT for the first time (or it's been awhile) I
recommend that you spend the 3 bucks and do the whole thing.

Maps:

Meeting Place for start - Use Google maps and type in:
Spanish Landing, San Diego, CA 92101, USA

With Week 1 under our belt of our 8 week program training for the Del
Mar Iron Girl - I would like to get some feedback. If you have
already sent me info – you do not have to respond.

For those of you who are interested in training for the Iron Girl

Is the start time of Week good, or would an earlier/later time be
better?
We met on Saturday, are there other days that work better?
Is the location a factor? The plan is to find good places that cater
to our coaches & trainees!

Training Program:

If you would like the 5K and or 10K Iron Girl training program,
please contact me and I will send to you.

Week 2 Group Run:

On Saturday, 3 May, our San Diego Team LUNA Chix team leader will be

Hi everyone,

Just a quick reminder about Sunday's coast ride.

We are going to begin our ride just outside of the Torrey Pines State Beach parking lot in Del Mar and continue up the coast to Starbuck's in Carlsbad, at which point we will take a 10 minute break and then head back to Del Mar (approximately 34 miles round trip).  We may also take a break to visit the Luna booth at the Encinitas Street Fair on our way back to Del Mar.  There will be some hills on this ride.  Remember, though, that if you are tired we can turn around earlier and head back.  We will meet at 7:45 am and be on the road by 8:00 am.

It is going to be hot on Sunday so please bring extra water to drink and don't forget your sunscreen.

Driving Directions: Exit the I-5 at Carmel Valley Road and head west.  Follow Carmel Valley Road until you reach McGonigle Road (a stoplight) and you will see the Torrey Pines State Beach sign on your left.  Park anywhere along the road.  Parking in the lot costs $8.00.  We will gather in the parking lot just past the guard shack.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at leahhaeber@yahoo. com.

See you all on Sunday.

LUNA is a sponsor of the Iron Girl 5K/10K races that will be held on
Sunday, June 22 2008 in Del Mar
http://www.irongirl.com/Events/Del_Mar.htm. We will be starting an 8
week training program and meeting for group runs.

This is very short notice, but we will be starting Week 1 this
Saturday morning at Lake Miramar at 7:15. Meet at the bathrooms and
be prepared to run by 7:30. For those of you not familiar with Lake
Miramar, it has a well marked paved road that you can run an "Out and
Back" course or run completely around the lake (5 miles).

If you are interested in training with us for this event, please
email directly to grapes@.... Please include the following
information:
Would you be attending most Saturday morning group runs?
Where do you live in San Diego and how far you are willing to drive?
What is your ability level (beginning/intermediate/advanced runner)?
Have you run a 5K or 10K (or longer) race?

Training run locations (and times) for the upcoming weeks will be
dependant on the feedback received from those interested in joining
us.

Hope to see you there!

The Encinitas Street Fair is going on that day, so 101 will be closed to vehicular traffic, and that whole area will be nutty busy.  A safe detour route through coastal downtown Encinitas will be planned...more than likely left at Self-Realization Center/Swami's (K Street) and along 3rd Street past Moonlight Beach.  It'll be our own little "Tour de Yoga"...more yoga studios on one street than probably any other place on earth.  :)

Just to clarify...McGonigle Road (Is it just me or has anybody heard of this road before?) is not off of Coast Hwy 101; it's that parking lot you see on the east side of N. Torrey Pines Road (Hwy 101) that can only be accessed by Carmel Valley Road.  The parking lot is off the I-5 at Carmel Valley Road, heading west along Carmel Valley Road to the Pacific. You can’t miss it. At the end of Carmel Valley Road, left/west on McGonigle Road, is the car park entrance for North Torrey Pines State Beach parking lot.  Park outside or either bring your State Park parking pass to park in the otherwise $8 parking lot.

FYI (from Lisa Jennings of CAF)

Hi Everybody,

I am a ride leader for the Challenged Athlete Foundation Qualcomm
Million Dollar Challenge along with volunteering for other events with
this awesome organization. This Wednesday, April 16 (which also
happens to be my birthday...) Whole foods is doing a wonderful thing
and donating proceeds from all sales in La Jolla to CAF. I am asking
you to swing by if you can an buy some of their wonderful groceries. I
love this store, they have fresh and fabulous food for everybody, I'm
especially food since they carry foods for celiac people like me ( I
can't eat wheat, yes no pasta, bread, crackers, gravies or pastries
for this chick unless it's made of things like they use at whole
foods). Please pass this along to your friends who might be in the
area. CAF is an amazing organization. If you have any questions,
please let me know.
Whole Foods Community Support Day for Challenged Athletes Foundation

On Wednesday April 16th Whole Foods Market in La Jolla will be
donating 5% of total sales to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

With your help spreading the word to family, friends and neighbors, we
hope to bring in the highest single-day sales to the store, thereby
producing a sizable donation check for our cause. Please tell everyone
you know to shop for their groceries this week at the Whole Foods
Market in La Jolla on Wednesday April 16th between 7am and 10:00pm.
CAF will have a manned table set up all day, so stop by and say hello.

See you soon,

More reasons to eat oatmeal...not the instant type, but the "Old-Fashioned Oats."  I buy a large box of 2 monster bags of Quaker Oats from Costco.  You can also buy organic almond butter there.  It's super expensive in the health food store, but a great price at Costco.  Happy pre-ride breakfast eating!!

Super-Breakfast
A big day starts with a solid breakfast
The Saturday mornings of just spinning your legs to stay warm are over. Now it’s time to see how all that early season training will pay off. To help power you to the front of the pack, I’ve created this ultimate breakfast that will stick with you through the ride, yet digest fast enough to keep you from feeling bloated or too full.
The oatmeal is the wholesome foundation that provides a great source of fast- and steady-burning carbohydrates needed for each pull at the front of the group. The side of whole grain toast and almond butter adds protein to stave off hunger after the first couple of hard efforts. A glass of orange juice serves up a hefty dose of vitamins and minerals to keep you in the game, aid in recovery, and support your immune system so your hard group ride doesn’t put you under the weather going into next week. Oh, and even though it’s not listed below, feel free to add a cup of coffee or tea if you normally have one in the morning.
Berry Vanilla Oatmeal
¾ cup water
Pinch of salt
½ cup old fashioned oatmeal
2 Tbsp dried berries, your choice
¼ tsp vanilla extract
1 Tbsp 100% fruit spread (same as berry of choice)
¼ cup nonfat milk
  • Combine the water, salt, oats, and berries in a medium saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until oats are tender. (~5 minutes).
  • Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and berry spread
  • Add skim milk.

There will be TWO bike rides...one on the 20th (inland Rancho Santa Fe area) and another one on the 27th (coastal).  Stay tuned for more details.

I can see where there was some confusion.  Sorry about that!

A message from SANDRA FAIRCHILD never2late2tri@....

I recently accepted the challenge of cycling in the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure fund-raising event. The Tour de Cure is a series of cycling events held in over 80 cities nationwide. The Tour is a ride, not a race; it features different route lengths from a leisurely 10-mile course to a demanding 100-mile journey. I have joined thousands of others to pedal in support of the Association's mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

I am asking you to help by supporting my fund-raising efforts with a donation. Your tax-deductible gift will make a difference in the lives of more than 20 million Americans who suffer from diabetes and another 54 million people in the United States with pre-diabetes.

It's fast and easy to support this great cause - you can make your donation online by selecting the "Click to Support Me" link below.

Any amount, great or small, helps in the fight against this deadly disease. I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress. If you want to do even more to help, please consider joining me in this great event. Our efforts will help set the pace in the fight against diabetes.

More information on the American Diabetes Association, its programs and diabetes in general can be found at the Association's Web site: www.diabetes.org

Happy Spring!

Luna Teammates Monica and Chris will be leading a ride (their first as
new Luna Chix!). Please plan to join us!

We are working on the final details of the route and will send out an
update early next week - so far we are looking at riding thru some of
the most beautiful areas of Rancho Sante Fe. As with the past rides,
plan to meet at 7:45 and roll out at 8:00 am. We are looking at
approximatley a 30 mile ride (no significant hills!) and certaintly do-
able on a mountain bike.
