Can you believe it's October? Wow.

NEW TIME FOR WEDNEDAY!!!-
We've only got two weeks left for our Wednesday night workouts. Because it's
getting
dark earlier, we will be starting our workout at 5:45. Please meet us in the
Moonlight
Beach parking lot for a brick (10 mile ride followed by a 2 mile run) or a 45
minute walk,
run or walk/run. Although it is our goal to have you back to your car before
the sun goes
down, please considering wearing bright, reflective clothing and putting on a
bike light, if
you have one. Can't be too careful!

Directions- take the 5 to Encinitas Blvd. Exit on Encinitas Blvd. going west.
After crossing
the 101, turn left on 3rd Street and go up the very steep hill. Turn right on C
Street and
park in the east end of the lot.

Our big event, the Subaru Women's triathlon, is going to be held on Sunday,
October 14.
Since we are all busy getting ready for this event, there will be no official
ride this Sunday.
Instead, we will be doing a course preview at Mission Bay for all those doing
this race. If
you are interested in joining us and are not already part of our Subaru training
group,
please email whitney.despain@... and we can send you the details!

The rest of our month looks like this-
October 21st- Carlsbad breakfast ride. This is a first for us. We will roll
out of a
Souplantation parking lot in Carlsbad at 7:30, ride two hard hours, then return
for their
breakfast buffet. Yum.
October 28th- Del Mar Inland Loop. You know it. You love it. We'll be doing
the fun 25
mile route that tours Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe and Four S Ranch before flying
home via
the 56 bike path.

We hope you're all having a great fall. See you on the road!

As always Whitney, great e-mail.

Last night was great fun.  I led the brick; Michelle the run.  Michelle has the waiver with names so here’s my best

Emily, Liz, (can’t remember her name; really fit dark haired woman recovering from an injury, she was there Sunday) and the bomb Jackie (we did the ride in 39:20)

Emily, Liz, Jackie and I ran (19.58 I think).

Michelle had Cindy O’Grady and the women who walk their dogs.

I’m sure Michelle can give you a better summary.

We were all wondering if we could start 15 minutes earlier next week?  (Women are still exited about coming to the workouts, they are amazing) It started to get a little dusky and I was worried cars wouldn’t see us.  It was fairly dark coming back on the run and although you are safer, we’re still difficult to see.  We could even suggest, reflective clothing and/or lights on bikes.

Thanks Whitney, Darlene

We just received word that LUNAFEST will be coming to Encinitas on Thursday, November 8th
at the historic La Paloma theatre. Mark your calendar now- you will NOT want to miss this!

LUNAFEST is a great opportunity to see short films by, for, and about women. Some of these
films have been screened at such prestigious festivals as Sundance and South By Southwest.
The topics are diverse, but they all speak to issues important to women everywhere. You can
get more information on specific films at www.lunafest.org.

The best part is that 100% of the profits from these festivals are donated to women's charity-
15% to The Breast Cancer Fund and 85% to hosting community organizations.

So you get to hang out with your girlfriends, watch some great films, and know that you're
helping out other women. What's not to love?!?!?

When we have more information, we'll pass it along. But for now, get this on your calendar!
We hope to see you all there!

Good afternoon ladies! We have another big weekend for you.

This Saturday, we've been invited to attend the Tri Club of San Diego's
Triathlon
Transition/Open Water Swim Basics clinics. These clinics begin at 1p.m. at
Mission Bay.
You do NOT have to be a Tri Club member to attend these clinics. If you are
planning on
doing either the Mission Bay Triathlon or the Subaru Women's Triathlon, or if
you're just
interested in learning more about open water swimming, come on down. There
should be
lots of familiar faces! For more information, please go to
http://www.triclubsandiego.org/
featuredEvents/9183142.html
This is NOT an official LUNA Chix event. We're just guests ?

On Sunday we'll be riding from Moonlight Beach in Encinitas to Torrey Pines.
This ride will
stay on the coast, with a few moderate hills. When we get to Torrey Pines,
you'll have the
option of doing hill repeats. If you don't want to climb Torrey Pines- no
problem. We'll
have a group going back without doing the hills. But if you want to go up once,
twice,
three times…we'll be there for that too! Fair warning- this is a moderately
difficult ride
(even without the big hills), and would NOT be suitable for cruiser bikes. We
will leave
from the east end of the Moonlight Beach parking lot at 8 a.m. sharp!

To get to Moonlight Beach- Take the 5 to Encinitas Blvd. Exit on Encinitas Blvd.
going
west. After crossing the 101, turn left on 3rd Street and go up the very steep
hill. Turn
right on C Street and park in the lot.

It's getting darker, but our Wednesday night workouts are still going strong!
We will leave
from the Moonlight Beach parking lot this Wednesday night at 6 p.m. for a brick
(10 mile
ride and 2 mile run) or a 45 minute run, walk or run/walk. These won't last
much longer,
so come on out while you still can!

And don't forget next Sunday we will be holding a Beginner's Only Bike Ride in
San Diego!
This ride will be flat and easy, and is the perfect time to get that friend,
neighbor, mother
or daughter out for their first experience with a group ride. Beach cruiser and
mountain
bikes would be just fine on this ride. More information to come!

Have a GREAT week everyone!

*****************
Hey Ladies,

I am really excited for us to do our 1st Team LUNA Chixs Basic Skills Class.
This will take
place on Saturday 9/15 at 8am. Meeting at the Mission Trails Park Visitor
Center.

We will spend most of our time in the park working on many basic skills-

Riding Safely
Group Etiquette
Pace lines
Shifting/Braking

And many other bits of information that will allow you to ride better, safer,
and with much
more confidence.

There is "absolutely no charge" for this event but we do ask that you consider
sending
donations into the Breast Cancer Fund. We would like the work we do as
Ambassadors for
Team LUNA Chixs to bring additional funding to help put an end to a disease that
has
affected all of us.

Please feel free to call me, Jay Hines, for any additional information or e-mail
me at
julehines@...

Also just so you have more to look forward to we will be hosting a climbing
clinic in
October. This will be held for all of you that want an all out challenge… Mt.
Palomar!!!!

See You Soon,

Jay

4 Hot Items at the Breast Cancer Fund:

1.  In September and October, there are many ways—all across the country—to get involved and help spread the word about breast cancer prevention. Check out the Get Involved page of the Strong Voices website to attend or volunteer. We need your Strong Voice!

2.  On Thursday, September 6th, we proudly release The Falling Age of Puberty in U.S. Girls: What We Know, What We Need to Know, a groundbreaking report by author, biologist and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber. Over the past few years, studies have revealed that girls as young as two are entering puberty. The reports and images are deeply disturbing. For breast cancer advocates, there is something else that is disturbing: early puberty increases breast cancer risk. As a Strong Voice, you will receive a hardcopy of the report and companion Advocate’s Guide in the mail in the next few days. In the meantime, feel free to check it out at www.breastcancerfund.org/pubertyreport (site launches on Thursday, Sept. 6th).

3.   This year, BCF is co-sponsoring legislation in California that would remove harmful chemicals from children’s toys. These chemicals, called phthalates (pronounced THA-lates) are used to make plastic soft and flexible and can be found in many toys and teethers, especially those made with PVC plastic. Unfortunately, phthalates are also incredibly toxic for young bodies and are a concern for both early puberty in girls and breast cancer in women.

On Tuesday, September 4th, the Toxic Toys Bill (AB 1108) narrowly passed the California legislature (See press coverage). Despite mounds of scientific evidence showing harm from phthalates, Governor Schwarzenegger is threatening to veto this vital piece of legislation!  California Strong Voices: Keep your eyes out for an Action Alert from BCF and when you receive it, urge the Governor to sign AB 1108 and then forward the Alert to a friend. If you are not in California: Check out BCF’s Legislative Toolkit to get similar legislation moving in your state.

4.   On the lighter side, take a minute to check out BCF’s new Not My Breasts campaign, use your creativity and make your personal pledge to prevent breast cancer now.

The Strong Voices Leadership Program is a vibrant and dynamic community of individuals who speak and act with conviction in support of the Breast Cancer Fund's mission to identify—and advocate for elimination of—the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease

Hey how did the run/walk go with your mom??? Hope to see you tomorrow night. By any chance do you still have an e copy of the Race Check List?
thanks,

Hi ladies! We hope you all had a nice weekend, and managed to stay cool!

The Wednesday night workouts continue this week at a new time! Now ALL workouts- the
brick (10 mile ride, 2 mile run) and the run, walk and run/walk will leave from the
Moonlight Beach parking lot at 6:00.

To get to Moonlight Beach. Exit the 5 at Encinitas Blvd, heading towards the beach. Turn
left on 3rd, up the steep hill. Turn right on C. We'll meet at the east end of the parking
lot.

This Sunday we've got a GREAT ride for you- Camp Pendleton!! This is a fantastic ride,
with gorgeous views and lightly travelled roads. We also have two starts, so you can
decide how far you would like to ride.

The SHORT ride (well…comparatively) will begin from Las Pulgas at 8:00. If you choose
this route, you can expect small to moderate hills in the middle section, and a total of
about 30 miles.

To get to Las Pulgas, Take the 5 north. Exit Las Pulgas. You will see a parking lot on the
north-east side of the highway.

The LONG ride will leave the Oceanside Harbor at 7:15 a.m. This route will take you
through Camp Pendleton, so you MUST BRING YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE to get on base.
This route includes some moderate hills, and we will be riding at a fairly quick pace
(16-18mph) so we can meet up with the Las Pulgas group on time. You can expect to do
about 50 miles on this ride.

To get there, take the 5 north to Oceanside Harbor Drive. Exit heading west. Turn left on
Carmello drive (before the Del Taco). The street will wrap around and down into a large
parking lot.

If you aren't sure which ride to do, feel free to email one of us, and we'll provide you with
our recommendations.

Do you have our Bike Skills Clinic with ex-professional cyclist Jay Hines on your calendar
yet? You should! If you have ridden with Jay, you know she has a gift for helping new
cyclists feel more comfortable on their bikes. This clinic will be on Saturday, September
15th at 8:00 in San Diego. More information will be coming soon!

Have a wonderful week!

Hi Whitney,
My name is Emily Crow and I just recently joined your yahoo group. I'm
excited to meet and start training with you guys. I was just wondering a
couple of things. Is there a membership fee for the training events? Also,
I am signed up for the Subaru Triathlon in Oct so I'd love to attend some of
those scheduled times.
I won't be able to make it this Wed but hope to get started in Sept.
Thanks,
Emily Crow
