This Friday's ride is a COACHED MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE from UC Cyclery to
UCSD. If you have never ridden a mountain bike and want to, this is a
great time to do it. If you need to borrow a bike, let me know.
MEET: 4pm at UC Cyclery in La Jolla/UTC
DURATION: About 1.5-2 hours with frequent stops and coaching sessions.
ABOUT THE RIDE:
5 minutes on the road
10 minutes riding across campus to the Eucalyptus Grove by the library
The trail has wide fire road (doubletrack) with hard-packed dirt and a
few sandy places. Much of it is flat with a few gradual
descents/climbs. There is lots of singletrack that winds back and
forth, with shrubbery on either side of the trail. There are two low
bridges that we cross. We will stop to take a look at anything that is
not wide-open, flat doubletrack before we traverse it. For the
intrepid, there are a few little jumps and some steep rutted descents
just waiting for you.
I took my dad on this trail for his very first mountain bike ride a
couple months ago. His comments were: 1) I wish I knew better how to
shift before I got out here; 2) If you're taking me on the winding
singletrack because you think I'm bored on the doubletrack and need a
challenge, you're mistaken; 3) Hey, this is pretty fun! Can we do
this again Wednesday?
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
Body position on a mtn bike for the most control and agility
Reading the terrain and choosing the best lines
Shifting early and often
How fun it can be away from cars and noise!
WHAT TO BRING:
mountain bike in good working order
Camelbak or a bottle of water
helmet and gloves
sense of adventure!!
Please RSVP to my phone via text message or email (voice mail is OK if
you don't have txt messaging). Let me know if you have any questions.
SEE YOU FRIDAY!
